P Chidambaram on what he would do if he was Jaitley | Devender Sharma on solving farmer crisis

Ойын-сауық

P Chidambaram and Devinder Sharma talk about the Indian economy under the NDA government and the current state of the country’s agricultural sector with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra, The Arts & Ideas Club, Gurgaon on 26 November 2016.
Former union finance minister, Mr.P Chidambaram, talks about demonetisation, its effects on the Indian economy and whether it was worth it. He explains that income that ought to taxed has escaped taxation. He says that in order to end the shadow economy, all income should be taxed; and, the devised taxation machinery should be effective.
Devinder Sharma, a renowned agricultural economist, argues about how the government’s policies devised to allegedly generate employment are skewed policies. He says the government understands employment generation as pushing people from the rural to the urban areas; as a consequence of which, most people work as daily wage labourers. Furthermore, he proposes that if the government would actually concentrate on improving the agricultural sector and increases the MSP, it would boost the country’s GDP while simultaneously solving the issue of growing farmer crisis and their suicide.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.

It is surprising> Mr Devender sharma, you have really enlightened us with the real problems of the farmers and its solutions. If the schemes of subsidy in huge volumes as in foreign countries to farmers, then perhaps that wont reach the actual farmers, but the politicians and their spouses, who actually show farm production on records and get away with subsidies. there should be some other novel way, where actual farmer community should flourish and prosper, which in turn drives the growth of other sectors of economy and push the GDP to double digit as well. You deserve to be in Govt. as an advisor in Agricultural ministry

I cannot really say if Chidambaram is corrupt or not or if his son is corrupt or not. If they are then the judicial needs to take charge. However will say this that this man has a far better understanding of the economics and finance as compared to Jaitley and NDA Government leaders. Demonetisation has devastated a well running economy. One would then think that the government learnt the lesson as far as the implementation part is concerned but no. They repeated the same mistake with how they introduced GST. Lack of clarity and ridiculous taxation slabs with little help available. And what is the deal with 49 returns in a year. How does one expect small businesses to comply. Poor governance.

with his "far better" understanding of economy what did chidambaram do during the 10 years? he was the finance minister even in 1990's too. while china has rocketed to world super power since 1990, india is still considered third world. the only person benefitted were chidambaram, his family and congis whose wealth have skyrocketed. GST had to be brought some day and it takes time to implement it in a huge nation like india, where building a flyover takes years. someone had to swallow the bitter pill even it came at political cost. congress sat on GST for decades fearing loss of votes. if it were implemented before, we would have a much better economy today. economies are not made by one person taking decisions. agreed that the current govt is inexperienced but we are atleast on the right path today

One more request to the Programme Convener of Algebra; the slides which you are displaying behind the speech; few of them are not relevant to the discussion. Say for example when there was a discussion went on pertinent to the Agri Sector along with Sharma Ji, there was a slide depicting demonetization and the comment of some experts. Display a slide which is relevant to the discussion or topic of the discussion will be more suitable.

The problem started with congress govt allowing corruption by its allies with no checks on them and than people voted BJP without realising BJP has no able individuals to run a country. Now Modi self servingly made this foolish decision to fulfil his rhetoric without realising how blunderess the decision would be cos he has all spineless psycophants around him who wouldn't dare to question his foolish ideas.

Neither am I a dynasty slave nor a Bhakt, just a common citizen. Shoma kept mentioning again & again about NDA regime not creating enough jobs but Mr.Nitin Gadkari has gone on record to claim that as per an IIT study, for every 1000 crore invested one lakh direct or indirect employment is created. By this logic, he claims that infact NDA has created more jobs than what they have promised in their manifesto. Now either IITians are insane (which is hard to digest) or Nitin Gadkari has his facts incorrect. Why don't you call him in this show and literally grill him on what is the truth? Let him substantiate his claims by evidence and figures. More than anything all citizens have the right to know if election manifestos are delivered or not?

Heard an information long time before that Mr.Chidambaram has sold the old machines to Pakistan, which is used in Nashik for Printing the Rupee notes. More no. of counterfeit Indian Rupees been manufactured in Pakistan and it is coming back to India through Kashmir. This is one of the reason for Demonitisation that the type and colour including the GSM of the Rupee paper has been changed. Of course our people have faced huge trouble, but when it comes to the discussion that PC is also one among the reason a furious cause for this action is giving little pain in me. Because I respect him a lot for his intellect and the way that he handled the questions from any interviewer. But it is really hurt me that he has utilised his intelligence and authority for selfish purpose rather than for the nation.

Do you think that can be a reliable info? I mean its a common sense no gov will give another country their security features so that they can counterfeit and smuggle back their currency. Let alone pakistan. Selling machine does not mean they sold all the secret prints also. Pakistan themselves developed the technology to counterfeit indian currency as north korea does with US dollar.
