Salman Khurshid interview: Judiciary, Politics and Secularism

Ойын-сауық

Salman Khurshid talks about the faulty structure of the Supreme Court, the need for liberalism and why he thinks Rahul Gandhi is the right choice for the Congress party with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra The Arts and Ideas Club on 20 May 2018
While discussing the issue of judicial crisis in the country, Salman Khurshid says that there is no point in cherry picking chief justices when the entire judicial structure is at fault.
Talking about secularism, he says that, “secularism is the most demonised word in our times and our country should switch to using the word liberalism instead because it is more inclusive”.
Criticising the Modi government he says that, “there is no reflection of freedom anywhere in anything that the Modi government does” and it is in fact a government based on controlling the people.
Salman Khurshid is a member of the Congress party and a senior advocate. He was the Minister of External Affairs and the Minister of Law and Justice during the previous UPA government.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.

For once Shoma didn’t question about lynching which is her favourite topic ,though not a congress fan but loved his thoughts especially about equal right to all irrespective of being in minority or majority , that’s where the beauty of true India lies .

Algebra wears its Agenda on its sleeve:- Shama asks Salman - Please tell the audience ( not as a Congress Party Member ) but as a politcical commentator - What is wrong with the BJP. Why not call this Congress Algebra. ( very biased host . However:- To be fair Salman Khurshid made some excellent suggestions on Elections : Proportional Representation rather than FPP , Supreme Court Splitting the Appellate and Constitutional responsibilities . In this connection the Judges appoint themselves ( India is the only country where this happens. In the US every body knows that certain judges have been appointed by Republicans or Democrats) , and finally an excellent observation about inter community responsibilities ending reservations and moving to Equal Opportunity tribunal.
