Overturned tanker causes massive spill - two rotator recovery

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Overturned tanker causes massive spill - two rotator recovery. Watch as Big Flipper (75ton rotator) and Hulk (50ton rotator) tackle an overturned tanker in a precarious situation. There were no power lines up ahead, it was not in a tunnel, but that does not mean it was easy. This driver took a non-truck route, and somehow ended up on its side on a two lane uphill overpass. The tank ruptured and spilled hundreds of gallons of waste, flowing close to 1/8th of a mile down.
Before Dave and I could even touch the tanker, an offload crew had to come to empty the tanker and clean the overpass before we could drive up to it. This was a VERY long process, with our rotators being blocked in at the bottom for several hours. After what seemed like forever, we were given the green light and ready to upright.
My plan of using my new tanker tube failed, since it did not fit this specific tanker. Plan B was to rig from the opposite rims as the lift, and catch from the opposite side. First Hulk had to move the tractor over so Dave could fit Big Flipper to position up front. Once everything was rigged, we brought it over very slowly to make sure gravity didn't slide it back into my truck. All in all it went very smoothly and a job for the books! This is a tough place to drive in an ordinary car, let alone a truck. First bad decision was to take this route instead of the truck route. L.A. traffic won't always let you change lanes when you're trying to get onto the right freeway. We don't know why this happened, but if you want to make up your own version, this is a free country. Go right ahead.

The environmental cost for this clean up, by law, is the responsibility of the waste producer(s). The trucking company might get some costs thrown back at it by the waste producer in court but who ever produced the waste is responsible even if the trucking/environmental hauler is at fault. This is why it's important to choose environmental hauler *very* carefully.

Given how much you have to work at night and in areas with poor lighting, have you ever looked at those Airstar safety lighting systems? I remember seeing them when I was working on paving machinery, and they produce a lot of light but diffuse it well, so they aren't dazzlingly bright. It's a neat technology.

No need, it looks dark on GoPro because of the small censor the camera has. GoPros aren't great at night. But Hulk and Big Flipper have state of the art lighting, and I have Milwaukee light towers. It's not like I need to light up every inch of the floor.

I clipped the center divider Armaco barrier there once, going in the opposite direction. It was in the days before cup holders. There is a left/right/left which spilled my drink. I reached for it and clipped the barrier with my left front. What do you want to bet, this guy took his eyes off the road?

Tankers ain't no joke. They can have 4 or 5 compartments with baffles. I run 20 ft ISOs food grade no baffles.

Lovely new truck. Obviously uses DEP. Pity about the load in the tanker. What was it - tar of some sort? Who was the dude with the clipboard?

I stated the location in the video. And I don't like to speculate, who knows if he got cut off, was speeding, bad tires, fell asleep. The driver will rarely tell the truth for insurance reasons and I don't assume on stuff I don't know.

Isn't there like a 5 ton max weight limit on that interchange? I remember having to take the 170 to the 101 to the 10 to get to the port because of that particular interchange.

The signage definitely states NO TRUCKS. The 10 crosses the 5 several miles further south. The previous rollover with the garden stuff was on the eastbound transition there.

Use a big oak cribbing timber in the tank with a choker around it in the middle would also work and have no risk of sparks if that would be a worry

That's a good old school method we've done a ton before. But I wanted to be uniform with Dave, and he already set up his method before I found out the tanker tube didn't fit. Was much more efficient to just mirror his rigging.

By the looks of the tanker tires, it is a low-ball company running the tanker truck. Unmatched duals don't last long on the road.
