Great video. I watched all of your videos but this was the best. I went on a solo trip to the mountains last year with my truck but I just recently bought an 08 Jeep unlimited Rubicon to turn into my dedicated adventure rig. I am building it very similar to how you have your Land Cruiser. Overlanding is my new passion and means of relaxation. Hope you post more videos soon

Great video. I love me some 80 series landcruisers. So whats your biggest reason or reasons for going with a landcrusier vs say a toyota tacoma 4x4 crew cab pickup truck with a camper? Im on the fence on which to pick but those are my top 2 choices for overland adventuring. Any tips?

Hey mixflip - I really wanted the factory lockers and the seating capacity. Also, I did quite a bit of research on true cost of ownership using Edmunds. After all the research, for me, the FZJ80 stood out as the way to go. I admit to having a soft spot for Jeeps too ;)

The Tacomas and 4Runners are great. I owned two Tacomas, a 2001 and a 2005, and both were great trucks. I now own a Land Cruiser. From experience with both, I can say that some big advantages of the Cruisers are interior space, and a much stronger drive train. The components are stout. 9.5" ring gears and nice fat axles will stand up to a lot of abuse. Anything can break, but they are strong. The Tacomas are a bit lighter, so they put a little less stress on those axles, but any solid front axle Toyota will take a pretty good beating. The offroad performance of a Cruiser right out of the box is pretty tough to beat though. Please, don't thank me for confusing you even more... :-D

Overland Bound You know it. I just spent the day at Windrock in East Tennessee, where I live. Did some good trails. I was in my FJ62 and had a couple friends in a 4Runner and a Jeep TJ. Your video helped me make a decision, I was thinking whether to buy the plastic gasoline tanks, they look great in the rack, but I had the feeling that they are very small and more when you think of a Tundra, so you are buying at least one of those. Ask how long do you recommend saving gas in those tanks ?. That if I would not put gasoline together with water, nothing confirmed, but I have the feeling that the gases in the gasoline could contaminate the water. Maybe I do not have any relationship but I have that feeling. Thank you.

That thing is SICK! beautiful rig. I am a long time FJ40 owner who recently acquired a 97 FJ80. bonus with the lockers. what suspension & tire size are you running? I'm leaning towards a 2.5 ome & 35s with 4.88s. I also love the look of 2.5 trim the fenders & 37s. this rig is being built with future plans of being shipped to the big island of Hawaii on the rainy side. 160 inches a year or more kinda rain. I don't wanna be stuck in a muddy jungle but I do love the way it rides now stock suspension with 33s. please tell me how you would build your rig for this kind of extreme 2 volcano with snow, endless jungle, lava fields, beaches extreme terrain. thanks for the videos & info. have a good one kind sir.

+Dalton Wyatt Hi Dalton! Glad you like it! I'm running Old Man Emu 2.5" with a 1" spacer on back and 35s. Stock gearing, no issues. For extreme weather I may go with something different than the Mud Terrains I use now. Depends if it is asphalt or off road. I'm really happy with my setup - eventually, I may go with Icon Vehicle Dynamics suspension. I'd love to see more on your rig!

3:30 personally I agree with the sentiment of what you are saying, however it depends on where you are traveling. Anywhere with, snow, ice, sand or wet tarmac/gravel and you will be better with ATs (KO2s imo). KMs are only best in instances where you are frequently traveling through heavy 'sticky' mud. Personally for me, living in western Europe and overlanding to Eastern Europe and North Africa, I feel KO2s blow any mud tyre out of the water, also rate General Grabbers highly.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get started? Do's and Don'ts? I'm looking at Toyota land cruisers(Or Lexus LX), 1990 to 2005, planning on doing a full overland convert. i would go tacoma or 4runner. given your age and i assume budget. landcruisers can be pricy to repair and maintain. and honestly your age you likly dont have kids or need for the passenger space. a tacoma will serve you better when you enter adult hood and start you adult life. truck beds are very handy and you can make a tacoma every bit if not more offroad capable than a landcruiser.

Really nice rig. I have an '89 FJ62 that I wheel when I can. I want to set it up for overland type stuff, and have some parts done. I have the ARB bumper (a must for Cruisers), an Old Man Emu suspension and a Warn winch. I still need to do sliders and a rear bumper and some diff locks for sure. The 62 runs open diffs :( I will also find a roof rack at some point. Sadly, the money isn't there right now, but it's a cruiser, which makes it pretty capable to begin with anyway. If you want to see it, you can do so here: Offroading to Windrock Radar Base 10/25/14 Subbed to your channel. I like what you're doing and look forward to seeing more as you make it. Thanks for making some really good videos. Have a good one!

Can they be fitted with the typical winch, bumpers, roof racks, fridges, etc. Also can they be used as an emergency vehicle to carry emergency suppliies in the case of an emergency; such as fires, earthquakes, major floodings?
