Lost World's Toyota Landcruiser Rear Sleeping/Storage Platform

This is an unedited iPhone 6 video we made for a friend interested in building a rear sleeping storage platform in his Landcruiser. If you have any questions feel free to make any in the comments. We used this Landcruiser and the platform to drive from California to Argentina and all around the Americas from 2009 to 2014.

I have also taken stuff to cook inside a hotel room, but never thought to actually take the entire kitchen! Genius! I had to go back and forth many times to get spices, oil, and whatnot... your way, is the way!

Beautiful made... and i like the idea that you often park where the car isn't necessary leveled - I loved that removable kitchen!

Late to the party! I've been scouring the KZread for ideas on a storage build for my FJ. Every time I settle on a particular concept another one comes up I change my mind. YOURS by far is the bomb! The removable kitchen concept is awesome. Your set up is clean simple and realistic for DIY guy. Thanks for sharing!

It is interesting, comforting and refreshing to see how these fit-outs can be achieved without lining the pockets of the large corporations and Chinese trinket makers. Most people are Zombies who copy and paste what most others do. This idea presented here is almost certainly superior. I mean, when you see that the kitchen can be transported the advantage becomes self evident. I learn the most from, and am inspired by, the cheaper home made innovation fit-outs such as presented here.

For the propane gas tank and the extra tire, did you never had any issues with people stealing those? Since they are just attached on the outside of the car?

Excellent job. Has given me some ideas, particularly that fridge slide. You're not worried about being rear-ended and having the gas bottle blow up? Not sure it would be legal here in Australia. Will have to check.

+Nugget S. Legality, I'm not sure. However i did a quick search and tried to find a LPG tank that has failed in a collision... There isn't much... LPG tanks are very, very strong. If an impact fails the tank, i would assume there would be critical damage to occupants and the diesel/petrol tank....

May I ask two more questions, please. Was the ply used in the drawers just glued and screwed together, or did you do something special to gain a rigid frame. Also, those drawers slide effortlessly, despite being wood on wood. Was a particular varnish used to achieve that? Hope the're not silly questions!

  • @LostWorldLuis

+Nugget S. Sorry it took me a bit to reply! Not silly at all. I am no carpenter and a carpenter would probably laugh at my work, but the joints are an insane mish mash. Some are Kreg screws, some regular screws and some simply glued with Elmers... Like I mentioned in the video 3 continents and over 70k miles and everything is fine. The plywood I used is a high end zero void furniture plywood that came prefinished and it is super smooth, once it started losing the finish I stared rubbing the wood with a beeswax based concoction I use for my leather boots and it works great (Obenaufs Heavy Duty LP, amazing stuff for leather) Hope that helps!

This looks more like 3/4" ply on top and box sides w/ drawers being 1/2". I do like your max use of space of using drawers as support rather than framing the box.

  • @LostWorldLuis

Thanks Doug. As far as the plywood goes it is 1/2 inch pre finished birch ply all around (except the quarter panel covers which are 1/4”). The drawers may look skinny cause I did a rabbet joint on the front piece.

Sorry I never replied to this! I really cannot remember how much I spent in this setup, but basically the cost of 3 sheets of 5x5 furniture grade plywood. Really nice prefinished stuff... The finish is starting to look kinda sad now that it is about 8 years old. We indeed shipped from Panama to Colombia in 2010. We stuffed the Landcruiser in a container and then flew to meet it.

Driving an FJ60? Most definitely a doable trip with a very capable rig as long as the truck is well serviced and maintained. We have friends doing that drive right now in a Nissan Patrol and in a Jeep (kevandemgoglobal and theroadchoseme)
