Overcoming Our Egos | Craig Manning | TEDxBYU

"It is not how talented you are or much information you have stored in your mind but how well you use your mind that leads to high performance. The ego is the greatest source of human interference because it is always seeking approval from outside sources. In order to gain this approval, an ego mind craves outcomes. The opposite of an ego-oriented mind is a task-oriented mind, which brings focus to the skills needed to execute the performance. Dr. Craig Manning is a Human Performance Scientist and the bestselling author of The Fearless Mind. His clients include the US Ski and US Snowboarding teams, Red Bull High Performance, the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA, and a roster of companies and professionals worldwide who seek to achieve high performance. He teaches at Brigham Young University, where he is Adjunct Professor of Performance Psychology and serves as Mental Performance Consultant for the university's athletic department.
Dr. Manning has found that the strongest correlation to human performance is cognitive control, or mental strength: It is how well we use our minds that matters most to human performance. Dr. Manning has played tennis at both the professional and collegiate levels, and has been a three-time Conference Coach of the Year at a Division 1 University. He has experienced human performance from the perspective of player, coach and applied scientist at the highest levels. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This video made me think that when we try to perform for our ego, and to prove something, there is this barrier in the way of pure performance. When we focus on the goal we have set and doing a good job out of enjoyment and clarity of our mission we can enter a flow state and perform more intimately with the task we have chosen.

Our ego is always there. If you brush your teeth, know your own name or change pants, you have an ego. What he explains is more the philosophical perspective of ego vs having a reduced one as you cannot lose your ego completely

@@IvnValmont this is a good point, if we lost our ego completely we would no longer be able to operate in the world effectively, just look at people blasted off on psychedelics who have forgotten who they are. As you say the goal is perhaps to reduce the negative impact that ego can play in our lives while still being aware of our place.

    1) Constant seeking of approval 2) Always focused on outcomes because of the need for constant approvals (Could also be a perfectionist) 3) Not persistent and quits easily as outcomes are difficult to achieve 4) Looks people and things to blame 5) Cannot perform under pressure because it gets anxiety if people are looking

The fact that self-improvement videos get such few views while entertainment videos get it in buckets tells you just how despicable people find it to work on themselves. Learn to interact with someone on the same energy level as you. It'll save you a lot of heartache.

I just wanted to say thank you for this I really needed this because I felt entitled to success .I failed to make my football team and I took it personal and was starting to get upset thinking I deserved it and started to think the coach just doesn't like me. And now I'm looking back and thinking other players have been there for years training and working hard and I'm here for one day and expected to be the best.Micheal jordan the greatest basketball player in history was cut from his high school team due to lack of skill but look where he ended up. I realized it's not if you will fail because you will but its how respond to failures .

Dont let people tell you what is good for you and not good for you, only you know what is good for you cause only you know what you’re good at. Whatever you want to do because you know you can do it deep down in your heart, the first that shouldn’t come to your mind is people’s opinions cause people will project and manipulate. Their manipulation will cloud you and make you believe in it instead of believing what you know is true.

Cut the ego and you awaken. My children called out my name and my husband's name, Mama and Dada. Not ma'n and woman. Nameless identities, to keep us following childless father's and mother's (priests and Nuns.) It is time to cut ego , know self , to see and hear what is in front of you. The animals know they came from Mama. Not a fathers spirit and woman's body, the priests talk about. That is a duality, they who follow spiritually have been reborn in. The rainbow

This is nonsense. This only makes sense if you remove A BIT of your ego, but if you remove it 100% you just don’t care about developing any skills or helping anybody, because at the end, ego is what creates all non animalistic motivations (and some animalistic too).
