The end of this movie was a real arm wrestling competition with real arm wrestlers. As a dad now this movie hits different then when I was younger. I love the reaction.

Yup. There's a brief clip of an arm break in the movie - that's real. And John Brzenk really won that tournament. The GOAT of armwrestling.
Best father-son movie ever - FREQUENCY. Definitely worth a react.
Granpa nodded approval seeing hawk hugging michael.... He knew it was wrong keeping them apart
80’s movies soundtracks were definitely a vibe. Let’s give some love to the great Kenny Loggins for 80s ballad “Meet me halfway” , bring back movies having original songs where the lyrics are referenced in the dialogue.

In the 90s too... Soundtracks that you could buy and always one or more songs that world specially created for the movie, that no longer exists and bonus or behind the scenes stuff, they don't make this anymore too
AHT AHT!! The soundtrack is awesome and Kenny Loggins is a national treasure.
You know when you're old that you seen 90% Stallone movies in theater.

Mike don´t think this way. Infact our generation had the privilege to grow up enjoying the greatest movie stars and the films that make part of the most amazing and cult scripts that 70´s, 80´s and 90´s years have provided to the audience. Do you think that "this" new generatiion that are discovering these classic films (Action, Sci-Fi, Horror, Drama) usully have all those things in great part of the regular releases nowadays or will have what to "react" some years ahead? Based on what CGI, bad scripts and not so good actors present in the most of the movies today, I doubt. If you pay attention look how these channels on youtube related to "reaction" are focused on the classic films. Its easy to note how rich those years were about the stories, soundtrack, actors, including the public that was present on the movie theaters to enjoy all of this. Nowdays people don´t use to go on theaters to watch movies anymore. The great part of them do it by cell phones, computers or using a streaming service on TVs. We (our generation) are/is privileged. Best regards from Belo Horizonte City - State of Minas Gerais - Brazil.
The subtle nod from the grandfather at the end was enough for me to show that he gets it, a boy should be with his father. The grandfather was selfish, but his motives made sense in a way.
The back story is there.. the grandfather thought he only wanted his daughters money, he spilt them apart, then at the end the grandfather nods to them like “I was wrong” he offered him 5x more money and a truck, and he chose his son..

Oh yes this is a good one
basically the grandpa had a control over his daughter and like he said you were driving us apart and the expression on the old guys face was like well i guess i need to let him be a part of his kids life
For a good year after this movie came out, EVERY kid in the US was arm wrestling in school. I remember my elementary school sending kids to the principal's office if they were caught arm wrestling.
My dad showed me this movie when I was 6 years old I remember every scene one of my favorite movies I wish I grew up in the 80s
I think people forget Stallone CAN act, but since he's mostly known for action movies they take his performances for granted, but all you have to do is watch the first two Rocky movies and the first Rambo to see his range.
And in terms of the custody, it was implied in his final scene after Lincoln Hawk wins that the grandpa kind of smiles and nods, showing that he understands that Lincoln really loves the boy and that they clearly should be given the chance to be together.
Such an underrated movie.
FunFact: the arm wrestling competition actually exists in real life and the competitors are mostly truckers

Yeah im still trying to find out what so damn funny about this movie.
Police wouldn't come after him for custody unless the grandfather called & made a complaint
the grandfather is robbert loggia, who also played frank. in the movie scarface. he passed a while back. he was a great atcor
That’s why I don’t agree with roten tomatoes, every person has their own opinion and yes I believe this movie is under rated
I never thought I would of liked this film when it was released bust Stallone and the kid have great chemistry and the arm wrestling is played for high stakes and as a viewer we grow to care for Hawk and we want him to win and have his son. It is a shame so many miss this gem
I wrote that this film was taken as a basis in the film Real Steel

Great reaction jaby and steph to a stallone classic big thumbs ups I loved this movie as a kid
The guy who played Cutler's bodyguard was also in Roadhouse.
One of my very favorite 80's films. Not just the arm wrestling and trucking, but the quest and journey to rebuild a torn relationship. That's heart.
OMG! I haven’t even watched the video yet and it gets an instant like from me. One of my all time favorites.
I arm wrestle with friends at school back then. Stallone was an idol
I was Mike's age when this came out and watched it along with Rocky 3 endlessly on VHS. Over the Top has the best soundtrack of ths 80s.
As a Screenwriter myself- I saw the "fill in the blanks" moments as a chance to let the audience fill in the blanks with details they're familiar with in similar situations that they're familiar with. "The world meets no one halfway" is true and we boomers in 1987 knew that life is tough and accepted it - which is why the slang word "snowflake" didn't exist. Only winners got a trophy in amateur sports and losers had to learn sportsmanship. In the words of one current public speaker who was asked by a college student "What do you say to those on campus who feel offended or uncomfortable with your presence? Her answer was "Life's tough. Get a helmet."
the final armwrestling match is pure testosterone! it drops out of the screen! the close up of there faces/eyes, the music, the sirene or whatever yells in the background! I love it 💪😝
This is one of my all time favorite films from my childhood, use to rent this a lot as a kid anytime I would sleep over my aunts house or grandmothers. And to this day I can see this and be inspired, Stallone is underrated as actor, writer and director.
most underrated stallone movie
The kid was on General Hospital for 4-5 years prior to this. He was good at age 7 and being on daytime tv made him even better.
The kid had to hide from the Grandpa's people that was waiting for him at the airport, so he had to sneak past them. Awesome movie:)
I always turn my hat backwards to get that extra rep!
The actor who plays Mike grew up to be a lawyer
32:58 i just like the total contrast between "he doesnt belong at my table!" and "you know i turn my hat and its like a switch you know i feel like a truck"
I assume the grandpa just went along with his sons wishes rather than hold him hostage and making him hate him.
They basically remade this movie and called it Real Steele.
The soundtrack is top notch. Stallone showed his acting skills in this film.
Cheesy music montages were the superhero/reboot/legacy-sequel/disney-live-action-adaptations of the 1980's. You couldn't escape them, they were just standard cinematic language and they were EVERYWHERE. To the point you didn't even notice them.
Try watching Oscar. Comedy movie with Stallone. I personally love that oldie.
As someone who grew up in the 80s. This film was watched a multitude of times!
*The world meets nobody half way. If you want something, you gotta take it* Truer words were never spoken!!!!! It's not pessimistic, it's reality! The meaning of this is that your dreams, your goals, your vision, even excellence will not just fall in your lap...they must be pursued.
It's one of my favourite movies of Sly
Those simple but wholesome Movies are the best
You could see the grandfather give like a little nod when he sees father and son interatcting after the win. Think that was meant to represent the realization of the grand father that he should not rob his grand son of that relationship yada yada...
A movie I can play in the background and can still keep my attention. This is up there with ROADHOUSE. This is classic. This is where the REAL STEEL movie is inspired from
The first time I saw this I was 23, and now the second time I'm 60, time sure flies
The child can decide at a certain age, who he want´s to live with.
This is not only the first Real Steel, but this kid is the spore that the real steel kid was cloned from.
Never see a movie like this made today, can't have a positive story about a father and son anymore.
@Renoistic

It's more like due to streaming low-stakes movies like these can only be made on much smaller budgets so they get lost in the shuffle. I can recommend the newer God of War game from 2018 and it's sequel Ragnarok. It's basically about a violent hike where an estranged dad and his son get to actually know and understand eachother while being hunted by the Norse gods. It's really good.
This is my favorite Stallone movie. I was the age of Michael when this came out in '87. The mom reached out to the Dad because she was sick and new she wasn't going to live very long. Stallone stated that the Grandfather tore them apart. The mother most likely hid the letters because she was influenced by her Dad to keep the father from the kid before she got sick. If the kid wants to stay with the Dad that's one factor of who he ends up with. Plus, the Grandfather saw the bond and their love for each other and he signed over custody. Meet Me Halfway was sung by Kenny Loggins who did pretty much the soundtrack to movies in the 80's.
A true classic. To me, this is one of Stallone's best movies, which is somewhat overlooked.
A true cinematic masterpiece. My school lunchroom was all about arm wrestling after this film came out.
Ma’am and sir shows respect.
Texans must be watching this reaction thinking "What a polite kid. What do these folks mean, how else is he supposed to address a grown man if not with "sir"?!"
Watched this at the movie theater at 9 years old Still one of my favorites to this day

I loved this movies before when I was younger. But now I have a son and he just turned three…this movie hits different and I plan to show him in a couple of years.
Underrated classic!
This is sort of a genre that disappeared which was disney style family film that the kids didn't realise was a kids movie. Films like these didn't signal itself as something childish meant we all took it very seriously as a real drama (and it was sort of close enough for it to pass as something for adults or people looking back on it, such as yourself). When you see it in that light the lack of writing about adult relationships and the reality of the legal system (or if a kid could drive a truck from LA to Vegas without being stopped) and the 80's cartoon music makes a lot of sense. Like judging from the comments no one in their 20's was coming out the cienma thinking they saw something amazing. My dad wouldn't have watched it on his own for sure, but did with me. Its all those who saw it as kids
this movie is flawless
You can see when the grandpa realized it would be evil to keep them apart. He gave up.
I love that movie so iconic great reaction 🎉
Over The Top and its spiritual sequel Real Steel are some of my favorite movies! :)
Such a feel good movie.
We owned this VHS video. My kids loved it. I enjoyed it too.
Masterpiece ever. Great
If you guys still have your father and be thankful everyday hes still around. Mine passed away back in 2018 and when i watch this movie in fathers day it got me depress and crying.
they do address it. The grandfather made his life hell because he never thought hawk was good enough for his daughter. Hawk basically admits he didn't handle it well and eventually left and that it was a mistake. He wrote his kid a ton of letters. Not sure why the mom had the letters.
my dad liked this movie. He showed it to us when we were kids
this movie and real steel really are alike.
Real Steel is totally an updated version of Over the Top. I've always believed they took that story and reformatted it for robot fighting over arm wrestling. So, it's funny that you just watched that one. Cause Over the Top is the OG.

This I was not expecting. Dad's favorite movie, introduced me to classic rock music and Sly. Me and dad never got along, but this movie helped shorten that gap between us. Everytime I stayed at his house we'd always pop in this movie and watch it, never got old. Still have the VCR for this movie
My pops first showed me this movie on VHS bb. Still love it. Trucking ain’t no joke man.
This movie sparked my fascination for big rigs! Told my younger self. One day, I'll have one, lol
