The “sixth” member of Pentatonix is Ben Bram. He and all the members of Pentatonix help with the arrangements, but Ben is definitely a very integral member of this process and the group.

They arrange it themselves with the help of Ben Bram, their producer. Lindsey Stirling collabed with PTX on Radioactive and Papaoutai, a French song that Scott found and loved. That one is a fun, quirky, weird song and video.

Let this reaction be a warning to you not to skip over a Pentatonix Christmas song because it's a standard carol that you are sick to death of hearing. They always have a few surprises. "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" is probably the most suggested, but my favorite is "The First Noel"

Part of the string motives you are hearing is a medieval Celtic melody-about 1000 years old. The arranging: Typically, when they pick a piece to do, they sit in a circle around a table and jam until they come up with a rough draft they like. Then they go to Ben Bram for the final refinement of the piece. The point is all members of the band are fully involved in the arrangements they perform. By the way, for me as a composer-pianist, I love the motific development you hear at the last portion of the song! Everyone was fire on here, but can we just take a moment to say how hauntingly beautiful Kirstie is in this video?!

Kevin also has an electric cello which has a basic outline like Lindsey's electric violin. I saw PTX in concert a few weeks back and they did this song with Lindsey virtually. It was EPIC!!!! IT is supposed to have a "reel" like feel to it. This is from a century old children's poem which has 12 verses! WOW! Ben Bram is their arranger and co-arranger. Ben did most of their arranger when they started 10 years ago, but as time has gone one, they are doing more arranging themselves. The first 2 Grammys they won were also won by Ben Bram for arranging. Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch were in ALL the high school choirs together! They went to high school together.

Ben Bram. who helped Scott form the group when he was at USC, has been an arranger and producer since 2011. He found Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola to add to the Trio and was the arranger for two of their three Grammys. Kevin has a cello that is like her violin. The costumes are the four elements earth, wind, water, and fire. Can you guess who is which?

Ben Braum has been with them since the Sing Off days. He actually introduced them to Avi. Scott stated for the most part they get together and throw out ideas, get what they like together and send it to Ben, who polishes it. On this one, Kevin said that he and Lindsey went to the recording studio and worked out the ending.

If you want to see how they arrange they released The Recording of Evergreen video. During the shutdown they all learned to arrange while at home. They worked with Ben Bram and 2 other people that showed them how to arrange vocals in a different way so they sound like actual instruments in some of their new original songs such a Coffee in Bed and Be My Eyes. That entire CD has a different vibe and I love it.

In their current concert tour there is an extended instrumental introduction to this song with Kevin on cello and Matt on a big kettle drum. It's epic and dramatic. Kevin's part/melody/composition is expanded beyond what is in this video. He's just incredible. He played a note on his A string where his finger placement was beyond the fingerboard to the area between the bridge and the fingerboard (where the bow also plays). I've never seen anyone play a note off the fingerboard before on any classical stringed instrument. And I used to play viola (eons ago). It never occurred to me you could do that. Try to find a fan video from the concert. It's worth a watch.

Idk if this is more an American thing but I'm in the UK and never heard the children's song before, I didn't know if it was a cover or an original. But the dramatic way they've transformed it into this whole...thing. itxs perfect for Scott whonis always so "Inc the song he just can never keep his hands still, so giving him something specific to do with his hands etc really upped the drama of the song too (adding in to the performance that Lindsey always gives with her playing). I was surprised no one mentioned wtf Mitch was wearing, i can't tell if it's feathers or fur, did he climb into an emu skin or something? Lol.i love Mitch, but sometimes his outfit choices are...interesting. There's a short video somewhere that I saw (maybe on their tik tok, I don't remember) of Kistie trying to get the hang of flinging those braids around the way she wanted them. It showed, what I think was a Beyonce (?) shoot or something where she flips her long braids and they fall perfectly round and over her shoulder, and Kirstie was trying to copy it, with... ot a great deal ofnsuccess at first. Hilarious. It's a killer look for the vid though. Kevin's cello that he uses here is called Beyonce. As for Lindsey's violin, if you've not yet checked out Kevin's channel (K.O.) he has an electric cello that looks equally cool, the structural design is as much functional as it is aesthetic, it allows him to do things he likely would struggle to do on a traditional acoustic cello, as well as the cut in of the body that allows a more comfortable playing position. I recommend watching his KOver of Marion Hill's "Down" as an intro of what he can do to the electric cello, but there's other pieces of his too where he shows he can absolutely slay on that thing. I've seen some interesting cellos and violins though, like where it's literally just the scroll, through neck/fingerboard into the tail piece without the body. Not sure I explained that well, so maybe just Google Stagg electric cello lol. As for violins, there's some really wild looking ones.

Never heard the song before and was sorely tempted to skip this reaction video. Glad I didn't! Imma go find the original on their channel. Boy! That was really good!

This style of the song with the visuals, reminds me of some of the videos that Skillet put out which has a lot of electric violins. Give them a try, they've been around for YEARS. I saw them at a conference years ago. Another artist I would suggest, Colm McGuinnes. He does some insane stuff mixing with violin, chello, voice in multiple keys and harmonies. He is great.

This is a cover of the original arrangement performed by a folk group called The Last Bison. It’s really good apart from the lead singer sounds out of tune. The PTX version took it to the next level though.
