You've presented the best historical telling of Louis & Marie Antoinette's children, I've ever seen. History to often focuses on the King & Queen, yet skims over almost all these forgotten lives. You've excelled yourself once again. I'll be re-watching this one, it has images I've not seen before. I'll also be re-listening again, as it has facts I'd not known of.

Note that even when the palace was stormed and Marie Antoinette rightly feared for her life and the life of her children, she also kept Charlotte safe. She could have just dumped her and paid attention to her biological children or even rejected her because she had come from commoners. But she treated her the same as her own daughter. That says a lot about Marie Antoinette

She was advised, long before they were captured and send to Paris, to get out of France and flee to Austria. She refused, didn't even want to send her children, although it was normal to get the heirs to the throne to a safe place during riots or unrest.

Louis Charles suffered terribly from abuse and neglect while imprisoned. There’s a book about him that reveals horrible things that occurred while the royal family was imprisoned. Louis Charles being a little boy and not fully understanding the situation, was initially fascinated by the guards. Some took his interest and cultivated a relationship with him. They were able to take mundane family events like bath time and bed time of the family in cramped rooms under constant guard and turn it into stories of Marie molesting the young Dauphin. None of it was true but the guards had completely isolated Louis Charles from his family and coerced him testify that she abused him. The lies help cement Marie’s execution. It was heartbreaking to have her beloved son accuse her of vile acts that none of the ever present guards could verify or disprove. After his parents death, the guards began to neglect him barely feeding him, leaving him in dark isolation for long periods of time and the worst guards physically & sexually abused him. Within a couple years, he was completely nonverbal and behaved in feral manner. He was neglected to death and autopsy showed much of abuse of the abuse he endured. His sister was seen as far less of a threat being a Dauphine with no money and unable to inherit the throne. I was shocked to,earn of his horrible mistreatment while reading the book The Lost King of France: A Story of Revolution, Revenge and DNA by Deborah Cadbury. The book also explores how DNA fr9m the urn holding his heart was used to verify that the boy who died in the prison was in fact the Dauphin and not an imposter as some people had believed.

Hello again Forgotten Lives. It was unfortunate enough Marie Antoinette being beheaded. It's sad that her family didn't fair much better in their own lives.

There could have been a very good reason that Mary Antoinette didn't do anything for the younger brother of Ernestine. The family might want to keep a son to carry on their own traditions and name.

Marie Therese was Madame Royale which was the title for the eldest daughter of the French Monarch. King Charles the first liked the title and adapted it to the Royal Family in Britain. His daughter Princess Mary of Orange was the first holder of the title Princess Royal. Today of course, its held by HRH Anne Princess Royal.

I am a bit worried when you said Marie Antoinette's former lover. Yes that was the rumors at the time and some historians think they were but it is not a settled thing amongst historians at all. You really should have used the word alleged or not used it at all because this story is about Charlotte and Ernestine and the children and not Marie Antoinette.

In that time wigs were powdered, appearing whitish. Also legend has it Marie Antoinette's hair turned white before her execution.
