Fun fact: in European Portuguese (Portugal), tramway is "electrico". In Brazilian Portuguese, tramway is "bonde" - in early 1900's, in Brazilian cities, tramway fare pass was called "bond" and users began to call these vehicles as "bondes".

Linha 28 is definitely one of the most thrilling and memorable tram experiences. Getting blocked by a motorist is quite common and the resulting kerfuffle very amusing (unless you’re a local who’s going to be late for work of course). Lisbon itself an underrated and wonderful destination. Great vid!

I remember being in Lisbon on holiday at least 10 years ago and it was packed. As you found out you can wait ages for a tram and there was a huge queue at one of the stops, mainly made up of crusie ship visitors, but in and amongst was an elderly Portuguese woman with some shoppings bags. The tram stopped and a few got off, but it was still very busy. The driver shouted in Portuguese, the elderly lady made her way onto the tram and then a few tourists got on., leaving loads behind. Quite right too to look after the locals who will use the service all year round!

They are older than you think. Line 28 firstly debuted in March 1914. In the beggining, it connected less than half the current circuit, from Praça de Camões to Basilica da Estrela. But don't let this fool you, what we see today is just the "shell". These trams got updated over the years, for security and efficiency reasons. The biggest changes ocurred between 1936 and 1947, with upgrades in the electrical motor, breakes and suspension. And then again, between 1995-1996 the fleet was once again refurbished with newer AEG motors and breaking systems. They underwent restoration and got back to the streets as a cultural heritage of the city. Glad you liked it. These trams are a tresure to know the city. 1.50 EUR for a trip passing trought so many points of interest is an absolute deal.

Interesting departure from the usual long journeys. It shows that even a small trip is worth a video. I loved the old narrow streets, stone buildings and patterned cobblestone sidewalks; a beautiful city. The Bika funicular went into service in 1892, after the other two, but the actual car is probably not that old.

Once saw a car that had somehow found it's way onto the Bica elevador trackway - it was during the June S. Antonio street party's and the large crowds - eating sardines and drinking beer - were much amused by the red faced driver and passenger struggling to turn turn the car around - wheels spinning on the calcada paving!

Trams are a welcome addition to your collection. Lisbon is a lovely old city, and the cars you rode are amazing. I hope you saw/rode the historic streetcars in San Francisco when you were there, along with the famous cable cars. Some of the equipment, which operated in the U.S. and around the world, goes back 100 years or so.

Great video Dylan, thanks. Lisbon is one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities. It is so intimate and its faded charm, not to mention the amazing ceramic tiles on building facades, is wonderful. My favourite European city. First visited as a teenage in 1971 and have been back several times.

Thanks Dylan I fondly remember those trams from a visit years ago, it was like riding a rollercoaster. Three or four of the passengers could have dealt with the offending car by bouncing it out of the way. Or they could provide drivers with a padded cushion and let the tram do the work in pushing it out of the way, if they buckle a panel on the car too bad. It wouldn't hurt the tram much.

Lisbon probably has one of the easiest to understand transport systems in Europe, it’s great. All 6 tram lines have these Remodelado trams, the 15E also has Articulado more modern trams for increased capacity. No other lines have them since either the turns are too tight or the hills are too steep (both in the case of the 28E!) Excellent video😁

I really like trams, and love the system in Lisbon. Would love to see more videos. The Bica funicular wasn't running when I was there in February but I took the Gloria one which was great too. A similar thing happened to us in Odesa with a car parking over the tram lines....instead all the guys got off the tram (and some passersby too) and we all lifted the car the half metre or so out of the way!

Manually moving the car would have probably been quicker than the 45 minutes it would have taken for the police to arrive (and then however much longer it would have taken to get the offending vehicle moved).

Ah the Ascensor da Bica reminds me of my late April break in Lisbon in 2017! The B&B I was staying was just so close to the entrance of the lower level of the Ascensor (Rua De São Paulo) which was around the Y junction near the entrance of the Ascensor! I can still remember when arrived from London I was amazed by the stunning weather in Lisbon even at around 8pm at night when having dinner at one of the restaurant just next to Ascensor da Bica. And yes these 'Ascensor' ridings are also included in the 24-hour public transport ticket prices so it's definitely a supersaver! The other one Elevador Da Glória was also impressive!

Ahh this takes me back to the last holiday I took before Covid (Lisbon, back in 2019) Rode remodelados & articulated trams on line 15 out to Belèm. Also rode the line 12 around Alfama - I remember seeing the driver stop to get out and visually inspect the distance between parked cars and his tram on several occasions 😅😅 A tip I picked up is that the Viva card doesn't just work on trams, funiculars, buses and the metro - it also works on the elevador de santa justa (one of the biggest tourist attractions in Lisbon) Being 'transport' its owned and operated by Caris and consequently, instead of having to pay for a seperate ticket (as many tourists do) you can just tap your viva card and off you go.

My wife and I are in our mid seventies now, and Australia is so far away from the rest of the world. However, if we can save our pennies and get up to Lisbon, we'll take that tram journey. It is now on our bucket list, but I only have a small plastic bucket.

Fantastic day in London. Couldn’t help playing your voice in my head as I imagined your review all the way between Heathrow and Paddington! 🤣 Just so you know, I’m not in the habit of hopping around the world. Santa Teresa neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro still has this same trams (bondes) also due to steep hills and narrow streets, also going strong after 60+ years in operation. The system was used all around town, but remained in Santa Teresa almost for tourist purposes but a cool legacy

You should make a video about Milan’s famous Peter Witt trams too, known as Carrelli (after their independent bogeys). They’re also called “Model 28” because the oldest ones were put in service in 1928. They were all beautifully restored some years ago and, unlike in other cities, they’re used on regular routes rather than on a tourist route.

Wasn't expecting this type of video, so thank you - I loved watching this and I'd happily take the trams if there were any in my local area. They were also exceptional value for money too. I do think that they should do something about parking though - either totally ban parking near the tram lies, or make the car parking spaces larger so that trams can easily get around parked cars - seeing as though nowadays, cars are bigger than what they used to be and therefore won't fit in the car parking spaces that were originally set out, when cars were smaller.

Yes, on the larger streets they use the pantographm changing to the other one on the narrower streets where there are some intersections where the tram lines have to cross each other from opposite directions, the pantograph would touch both contact lines and that wouldn't be good, that's why they change to the trolley one in those sections.

As someone who lives in a city with trams, I have to agree with your comment about them being a great way to see the sights as well as get a vibe of the city you're in. Had to chuckle at the blockage by the errant BMW. Typical of BMW owners world-wide who think they have a God-given right to park anywhere they like. I hope this one was towed away and impounded for a substantial fine to the owner.

Great video Dylan! On the subject of trams & similar, I can recommend the San Francisco Cable Car network, if you're ever out west in America. Well worth a visit.

That's one very funny "end of the ride" he he 😆😂 , but overall, it is a very historical tram and a very interesting video.

Great video. How about doing Kusttram in Belgium next? After all it's (currently) the longest tram in the world, and I'ts auite uniqe, going through both towns and rural areas along entire Belgien coast
