Many happy memories of visiting Lisbon regularly and riding the trams, especially Linha 28, was a highlight. It’s hard to capture how insanely steep and narrow the little streets are, and how the tram negotiates the tight corners, all at quite a fast pace too! Very skilled drivers obviously 👏🏻. Great video!

Since it's not often I can bring in my expertise, I may as well😂 Those trams are actually used on all lines - the 15 line also is equipped with Articulado modern trams since it's the only line they're compatible with. Ironically, those modern trams will soon be replaced! For anyone who wants to visit, I recommend using other lines than the 28 too - the 12 and 25 cover sections of the 28, and they're often much less crowded. Finally something which I don't think was mentioned - Carris makes no difference between tram and bus routes. Consequently it's frequent for a bus to substitute a tram. Also this means you must request the stop to board and alight, something I have seen a lot of tourists neglect and therefore miss their stop.😅 Awesome video mate!

The new CAF trams won't replace the articulado trams. Those new trams will allow to avoid the use of remodelado trams and buses on the line 15 and also to expand the line.

This video at last mate 😉🤣- it really is a fabulous experience, riding on a Lisbon tram! Having ridden on all the tram routes there, think my favourite is the No.12 It is the last remaining of the old circular tram routes in Lisbon and takes a more direct journey to the castle than the 28; it is equally rollercoaster like as it climbs up the narrow streets. My memory of the trams are the tram drivers ringing their bell to get parked cars to move out of the way! In really busy times, I have also seen small no.28 minibuses to help out (no fun in riding on them). Next time go to the Carris museum at the tram shed and see their collection of old trams & buses (some buses very familiar to UK ones from the 1950's - 1970's).

Quick correction: while lines 12, 18, 24, 25 and 28 only feature these trams, on account of their profile, they do run also on line 15 on occasion. IIRC, they do off-peak services, when serving the line with the large, modern Sorefame/Siemens-built (then turned Adtranz and finally bought by Bombardier, after which that factory was shut down) doesn’t make much sense. By the way, I know they are not as interesting as these, but are you doing a video on them, too? Bonus facts: the old suburban Algés-Cruz Quebrada section of 15E will be reopened at some point, but hasn’t been yet because the existing catenary wasn’t compatible with the pantograph-style pickups on those new trams, only with the old trolley-pole-style ones; as for these old trams, you might’ve noticed they were fitted with dual pickups, with the intent of using them on those off-peak services on line 15 and on some sections in other lines with that kind of catenary. Also, line 24 was only recently reactivated, and there are a lot of investments being made in reopening other line sections and even laying down new track, such as parts of the connection from Cais do Sodré to Santa Apolónia.

The interiors are lovely. Being electric, without batteries and running on rails which is more efficient and produces far fewer particulates than rubber tyres these vehicles are probably very ecological and as each year passes and energy and materials are not spent on replacing them they become more so.

I first visited Lisbon in 1992 when it still had a much vaster tramway network - however, many lines at least partly followed major roads without separate lanes of their own so some time in the late 1990s, Lisbon sadly axed most of the tram lines, partly compensating for this by expanding its underground network. I ride the remaining tram lines on all the rare occasions I visit Lisbon and I'd love to see some of the closed lines restored wherever they make sense!

These trams look fantastic! The car pulling out in front of the tram at 9:17 is an example of the "Priority" rule. At any junction where signs don't indicate otherwise, all traffic is required to give way to traffic on the right. I think this is the case in most if not all European countries which drive on the right, i.e. pretty much everywhere outside the UK, Ireland, Malta and (possibly) Cyprus??? I think they drive on the left there??? I've mostly driven in Germany, Switzerland and France, where it generally only applies in towns. It can be very unnerving for a British driver, especially when you are already having to cope with driving on the wrong side of the road. I believe that historically, and possibly to this day in some parts of Europe, traffic coming on to a roundabout had the right of way over traffic already on it. A recipe for instant gridlock in the rush hour if ever I saw one. It probably explains why roundabouts were a rarity in Continental Europe until relatively recently.

This is such a cool video... the only "public transportation" tram I've ever been on is the one in Hong Kong, locally referred to there as a "teng teng" (cuz of the sound of the bell). The ticket was a flat rate of HK$1.20 (USD 15 cents or thereabouts), so yeah even if you're going 1 stop it's still HK$1.20. That was back in the mid 1990s though. Things likely will have changed since then.

A Trip-Tipp in and around Lisbon (but without Line 28): Tagus(Tejo)-Hopping (I did it some years ago): Start by Train Apollonia - Oriente, here change to the bus to Setubal via the Vasco da Gama Bridge. From here by Train to Lisbon via the 25 de Abril Bridge to Station Campolide, here change to train to Alcantara-Terra. From here a little walk along the freightline to Alcantare-Mar and by train to Cais do Sodré. Now by ferry over the Tagus to Cacilhas, and from here by Tramway to Pragal. From here by Bus to Costa di Caparica with wonderful beach at the Atlantic Ocean. Way back by Bus to Trafaria and enter the ferry (last ferry before the Ocean - is it possible to see the sundown on board??) to Belem. And from Belem with Tramway back to Lisbon..

I think more old trams in the world could stay in normal service for a long time. Out of service / for special rides, you see that a lot. In Rotterdam, we have a lot of old trams saved, and you can ride almost any time. They don't ride in normal service, they became a tourist attraction. Very old Rotterdam trams are also on the streets when there is a lot of snow, to clean the track and wires. New trams can't do anything then... Old trams never break!

Thank you, nonstop eurotrip! I'm not a fan of this kind of old trams, I like what's new, airy, later, if you know what I mean. But for a tourist train, yes, for once, like that, it works. If we had to take it every day, of course I prefer the metro (moreover, I always prefer the metro to the tram). In this kind of trip report that you did, it would have been necessary (but you do not have the right, therefore not to worry to you) to make a "cab ride" as it is called in the middle of the fanatics of train: film in the cab, next to the driver. There, it would have been great but it's forbidden, so you did well to do like that. On the other hand, special mention for the sound, it is very well taken. How did you make the sound so crisp, so deep, so airy, so clear? It's rare. Thanks to you. And it's also a shame that we don't see you in "face reveal" like the other KZreadrs on the train do, nor that we know your first name.

The tranvia de Sóller began in 1913. And today they use cars that were used in Lisbon, they have the same gauge. Even the trams from Porto began their electrification in 1895 before Lisbon. By the way, the trams from Porto use the standard gauge like the Tranvia Blau.

COVID I'm guessing... Pre-COVID times it was actually common to see fully loaded trams, and sometimes they would send in a minibus that travels the same route to supplement the trams, because of so many passengers.

@@sergiofreitas9368 Ah, of course. I wasn't sure of when the video was made. I have seen others where there have been long queues of people waitng to board these trams at each terminus.

The filming date is always in the description. Guess I just got lucky. It was busy early on but near the end of the route there was just me and a few others 😃
