Outdoor Wood Boiler Installation Part 1: Insulated Pipe

First part of a multi-part series where we are installing our Hardy H4 Outdoor Wood Boiler to heat the Barndominium. In the next video we'll be setting and hooking up the Woodstove. The shop house will have hydronic radiant in floor heat to keep us warm!

that will work but i think later down the line you will regret not going with thermal pex the foam filled pipe it is the best you can get i have seen so many people dig that cheap stuff up and use thermal pex

I would have loved to install the foam filled pipe, but at over $18 per foot, it just flat wasn't in the budget. Here in west central Missouri the cheaper pex is used fairly often so I think with a fairly moderate climate it will perform well. Thanks for the comment!

I’m in Missouri and I did the same thing you’re doing. I had a roll of black drain pipe laying around, bought two 100 foot rolls of pex, and pipe insulation. Spent maybe $250-$300. Works well. Replaced my boiler with a gasification boiler this year. My dealer actually told me with my 30-40 foot run, it wouldn’t be worth digging my water lines up to put the foam filled pipe in. Said the heat loss from my homemade pipe is nowhere near with the headache of replacing it.

Wow. I just bought 65 feet at $10 per foot for ThermoPEX in September 2022 for my boiler.

I was going to do something similar, but I was going to use 6" SDR pipe so the pex could be removed if it ever leaked. But I was able to get Thermopex for $13/ft, so going with that.

That would have worked well also I bet! The thermopex looks like really good stuff. I would have loved to have the budget for it. Thanks for the comment!

@@assemblyrequired1 how did you join the black drain tile to the existing pvc conduit that you had under your concrete? Water getting into your hot water loop seems to be the hardest problem to solve when using homemade methods.

@@OilHist The black drain pipe was big enough to slide over the conduit, so I slid it up about 2 feet over the conduit and then just duct taped the end. Knowing that it wouldn't be 100% water tight, I used underground feeder cable for my power which should be fine with ground moisture and obviously the PEX doesn't mind water. The only thing of concern may be the insulation which water shouldn't bother too much, and the thermostat wire that I'm not currently using

@@assemblyrequired1 Sounds good! I think they main concern that folks worry about is if the outside pipe gets infiltrated with water, the water will then be in contact with the pex and absorb heat rapidly from the pex. Even with insulation this can occur. But it looks like you're fine.

Hello and good evening thermopex is cheaper than cutting wood to heat the ground and ants the backaches it will cost you in the long run

You trying to make your own, is NOT the same as the pre made system. This is bad information. Moisture will get into the drain pipe making the insulation wet and greatly reducing the efficiency of the hot water moving through the pex. Depending where you live you will also need to worry about the wet insulation freezing.

  • @assemblyrequired1

Definitely not bad information. There is nothing magic about the pipe systems that can be purchased. The premade pipe that I was talking about is literally two pipes wrapped in bubble insulation, all inside the exact same black corrugated tubing. As for water.... sure its possible that water could get in to the black pipe, although not likely, and if it does, the insulation that I used is not susceptible to soaking up water. It is polyethylene (plastic) foam. As for the insulation freezing, assuming that the insulation integrity is compromised by water, wouldn't there be so much heat escaping the 150 degree pex pipe that it would warm the insulation (heat escaping) and prevent the insulation from freezing? I'm a couple years in now, and am very pleased with how the plumbing is functioning. The temperature of the water when entering the house is virtually identical to the temperature exiting the wood boiler as closely as I can read on my gauges. If you're comparing what I put together to the system with pex encased in foam filling the entire jacket of the larger pipe? Yes, it holds heat better and is a better product, but in my scenario and in most people's scenario's, the benefits do not justify the additional cost. You're right, my home made piping system is not the same as a pre made system, I'd say its better! Thanks for watching and commenting! However I respectfully disagree with most of what you said.
