Out of this world Lake Pukaki & Tekapo | Mackenzie Region, South Island, NZ

The Mackenzie Region is perhaps one of the most breath taking areas in New Zealand. It's famous for their surreal vividly turquoise lakes, dazzling starry night skies and it's also home to Mt Cook - New Zealand's tallest mountain.
In this vlog we drove from Timaru to Twizel but unfortunately the weather wasn't great at Lake Tekapo when we were passing through for some lunch first at Kohan (Japanese) Restaurant.
Kohan Restaurant
Address: 6 Rapuwai Lane, Lake Tekapo 7945
Fortunately though, the rain cleared up by the time we reached our very unique SKYLAB Airbnb accommodation located at Pukaki, Twizel Airport. It was a great location since it's close to beautiful Lake Pukaki but also kind of in between Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook (which was the next part of our trip). An awesome little "space capsule".
SKYLAB Airbnb
www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/39899716
Other tiny NZ homes we've stayed in:
▸ Yellow submarine • WHANGANUI Day Trip + I...
▸ Pirate ship • Pirate Ship Tiny House...
The 4 Mackenzie Lakes we visited:
▸ Lake Pukaki (Peter's lookout, and Lake Pukaki View Point)
▸ Lake McGregor
▸ Lake Alexandrina
▸ Lake Tekapo (Church of the Good Shepard)
Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo are our favourites as the water is exceptionally stunning especially on a sunny day. It actually looks surreal. There are many different lookout points to enjoy the views too.

Y: 2 colors...but yes... 🤣🤣🤣 In my head I was thinking I see two....and as I heard myself think that I hear Yen say "2 colors" and for some reason that made me crack up by myself.. (probably scared my neighbor) Man, that water color was aaaaaamazing!! As soon as the video started with you guys saying there was some bad weather...I thought, oh man, that's gonna make for some beautiful clouds and skies as soon as the skies open up a little... amazing amazing amazing... I know the camera doesn't do it justice, but man, it was still amazing to see...thanks guys!!! Every location out does the one before it 🏔🗻🏔🗻 Just breathtaking...

Hahaha 😂😂 normally when they're in full bloom they're all around Tekapo and near that Church of the Good Shepherd.. from photos you see blue ones too and all the varying shades but yea.. just the two in our lil sparse patch 😂 still made us happy to see it though! Soo cool ay.. looks amazing and so vibrant! Sometimes it's more a milky blue at lake tekapo.. extremely gorgeous lakes in that area 🥰 I think you'd love the south island of NZ in particular. I am lucky, I grew up in Southland originally although now live in South Canterbury, but have traveled lots throughout the South Island. For every place that is well known there is a couple which are hidden. It is those "hidden" gems which are priceless. I could write a book of all the beautiful places and most are within easy reach, you just have to know they are there because in most instances they are not advertised or sign posted.

This is the most gorgeous area I've been to in the world, the cascade range and northern Vancouver are close runners up. I might have to take a road trip back to Tekapo next summer if fuel isn't even more outrageously expensive. but I'm not holding onto hope for that! Being a poor student sucks at times haha.

Thanks so much Daryl 🥰 we try our best! Nothing beats seeing it in person but we hope we capture places well enough to share their beauty 🙂 you know this Tekapo video almost didn't come together how we wanted coz some key files were accidentally deleted off our memory cards 😅😅😅 we had to purchase a file recovery software and run it for 48 hours straight to retrieve the files!! It was a relief to get them back and put the video together 😅

Spent a lot of time in this region it is my mothers favorite area :). I should point out since you have taken this video. The Church of the Good Shepherd in Tekapo, now has a rather large fence around it and Gates. Simply to control the "tourists". It is an active church and people were just walking in doing what they wanted whenever regardless of what was happening. Maybe a wedding or service. To help control that aspect of Tourist behavior there is now a wire fence in place. It is not a large security fence as such but it is there just the photos didnt really show it ( Not sure when this video was actually taken ). The lupins :) personally I love the lupins and think they are wonderful. Sadly the local council does not seem to agree and there has been bitter debate between those who live there and the council. As far as the council is concerned they are "weeds" and they had (not sure if still do) a spraying program to get rid of them. I seem to recall there was a compromise reached but cannot remember now. I am sure someone will know. You used to be able to drive along the Canal roads (yes they are private roads owned by Genesis Energy) but sadly in the last few years they have been closed off for the most part. Simply because they are privates roads and NZ's hellbent attitude to liability and OSH. The owner of those roads had no choice but close em) Some stretches you can still access but not all. The milky blue water color is due to glacial action. You should NOT drink the water. The color is caused by the movement of the glaciers moving against the rocks and grinding up the rocks. The water is very cold. Another really lovely video Peter and Yen and thank you for sharing it with everybody :).

Thank you for sharing all the insights Greg! Yes, such a beautiful part of NZ 👍 Hmm we don't remember any wire fence around the church.. this video was from the end of Jan this year. Maybe they only put it up when there's actually a service on? We heard about how the pretty lupins are considered weeds essentially there too! It would definitely be a tricky situation to control. Hopefully they'll leave some areas with it still because it really is beautiful when in full bloom!

@@PeterandYen Maybe they have taken it down, afterall we dont have the tourist numbers we did have.. To be honest has been a while since was last up there so anything is possible :) It was never a massive fence it was more used to help control the numbers. The roadways sides used to be covered in Lupins for miles and miles... For sure I can understand the councils stance, afterall it is technically a weed / unwanted plant... But, in saying that it also adds to the attraction of the region and especially when they are in full flower so very lovely and such wonderful photographic spots.. I have done lots of travel overseas in my time but nothing is quite like our own wonderful country.... I am more familar with South Island than am the North Island as well have traveled lots more in the South Island and over a much longer time :). Thank you for everything you both do... Keep safe and well :)
