that it is 1 order is not the problem. The problem is when the shipper or broker understates the payload weight when they tender the load on the loadboard. If it would be accurate you would obviously know or have a really good idea ( based on you knowing the rough empty weight or your truck and trailer) of if you can haul the load with legal weigh limits, which you agree to by accepting the load.

It's up to you.. In my State we can purchase a 3000 lb overweight permit pretty cheaply. I picked up a 3 drop pool table load late on a Friday night.. they shut the gate to the plant behind me when I left. When I scaled I was over 2600 lbs on the rears (they'd stuck a big box of slate on the tail for Drop 1).. 1st drop was 800 mi away in Denver for Monday. Plant behind me was closed, Permit office was closed ... I wasn't waiting for the plant to open back up on Monday and my Company was Never the type to overload me. 2600 lbs represented about a 6 percent difference between legal weight and overloaded on the Tail tandems.. and since the State would sell me an overload/permit I knew I wasn't tearing up anyone's highway. I broke out my Atlas and picked a non scale route to Denver and since I only had 400 mi to travel each day it was pretty easy running. I solved a problem.. I didn't destroy property.. and I was DOT weight legal for 2/3rd's of my trip. I ran 2-3 loads/week at that Company .. so 100- 140 loads a year .. of those maybe 1-3 would have weight issues. Maybe 1 percent of my loads.. I hope you don't expect life to be perfect .. it never is. Just a word of perspective .. when you run 56 mph in a 55 mph zone .. you are "breaking regulations".. Pump the brakes on getting huffy about engaging in activity that doesn't harm persons or property.. and solves problems.

Back then the forklift drivers knew their product and the best way to load most trailers. Sadly today many forklift drivers don't even know what their pallets weight or how to arrange the load for a trailer.

The curse of the 53 foot trailer! Loaders routinely plan poorly and wind up putting too much weight on the rear. Here in Cali when I was driving, the smart operators would paint a line or post a sign saying "Load as 48' Trailer" or "Don't Load Past this Line" to keep the weight distributed. But 83,000 is 83,000! I picked up a Campbell Soup load that weighed heavy once. Went back to shipping office to tell them and they said I was crazy! Turns out trailer was loaded by 2 different shifts and they loaded not 1 but 2 pallets too much. I'm sure glad they apologized for their mistake! (Oh, wait, they didn't😵).

At least you caught it. I remember being pulled into an inspection in CA in the late 90s had several things wrong with a year old straight truck included no ICC and DOT numbers. Convinced the CHP officer to write the ticket to my manager. Needless to say I was pretty thorough after that with my DVIR inspection after that.

You get charged by the pound for what you are overweight. Also, the APU exception is 400lbs in some states and 550lbs in other states. Some states dont have this such as NC. This is only good on an axle, NOT for being over 80k pounds. Hope this helps.

They always act like you’re the problem but they’re the ones loading trucks illegally overweight. I experienced this recently where a shipper loaded me 5,380 lbs overweight. They told me they couldn’t take any off because that’s what the customer ordered. I stood my ground and the manager told me “there are plenty of drivers that would happily take the load over weight and they load trucks overweight all the time” 😆 Bottom line is they ended up taking off two pallets of product but it was a huge hassle and cost me a lot of time.

These shippers should know on those heavy loads, they should be asking when it's a different carrier to come in there and pick it up, how heavy of a load can they haul.

If you’re bored maybe you can check it out on their channel??? The one you saw yesterday where the ramp comes out the back I believe those are definitely a wet system trailer needing a hydraulic pump on your truck to make it happen!!! I’m not trying to spend your money like that but think it’s great that you keep your options open for staying busy!!!!
