I think my only real high-level question would be if you guys are going to try and have some sort of 'fallen precursor' elements in this world, since a lot of sci-fi writers seem to like giving their world a light dusting of the remains of some past alien civilization. It's not necessary that you do, and based on your past content I'm sure I'll still enjoy whatever is made, alien ruins or not, but I'm just curious if that had been one of the ideas kicked around for this setting.

Question (s): Will colonized space take up the entirety of the Orion Arm (10000 ly long, 3500 ly across), or just be a dozen systems inside 20 ly of Earth? In-between? Will the Orion Arm have aliens other than the Synfraxi, or just terraformed human worlds?

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who had thoughts along these lines. Heck, even a couple of short stories like the one they did for the Holy Rollers, would be awesome. Or even if they keep those two in the bag for later and slowly flesh them out a bit more. I so wish youtube allowed subscriptions to play lists, where you could have a play list for each series of videos a channel did. Then it would almost be like a tv network.

I liked the concept of Taangali. If it can be worked into the Orion Arm, I'd think that it would be one of the colony worlds that for whatever reason, got cut off from the rest of the galactic community, suffered some cataclysm. I think one of the possible 'origin' stories mentioned was that it MIGHT have been a world of a far flung empire? That can still work in Orion Arm, especially if eventually someone rediscovers it but can't LEAVE to let the greater community know. So Taangali gets to stay as it was, and the Orion Arm continues its machinations.😊

So for me, there are three things that I would love to see from this project: 1. A way to play it as an TTRPG. Getting a few mates together and then form some sort of black ops/mercenary band that is struggling to keep the money flowing while doing their shenanigans. Or just a straight up interceptor/fighter squadron doing Ace Combat stuff. 2. Once the setting is starting to be fleshed out, the idea of following a simple white collar worker life for about a week would be rather fascinating. Where do they work? What is their daily challenges? How would their family life look like? Do they drink a bit every day or are they a weekend party animal? Pretty much a small diary entry from someone who isn't important. 3. Where are the cat girls?

However, we don't know what the 2nd choice of the Taangali voters would have been. In a runoff, I suspect the Sci-Fi setting would've won anyway. I would have preferred Tyrrell. It has potential to cover Everything from low fantasy to high fantasy and the era it is inspired by is one of the most interesting and turbulent in history . An era where we went from a mostly farming based economics to a fully industrial society. Thoe the setting was described as low fantasy the description of the Elderkin was more high or middle fantasy. And this gives the setting the potential it has. On one hand you can have a non-magical story about people living the lives in what was the industrial revolution one of the most turbulent periods of history with revolution, social issues and so much more. On the other hand, you can have high fantasy with stories of the Elderkin trying to preserve their old ways in a changing world and have Harry Potter style storis. And if you want to combine them you can do that. Have an arms race where they try to use the magic of the elder Elderkin and combine it with technology to create new and more powerful weapons. Or you could go full steampunk. Hey steampunk is basically 1880-1890 technology combined with magic because how else do you explain all the crazy stuff in steampunk. And that is my reason way Tyrrell would have been preferred because the wide area of potential story’s. You have potential for storis from J.R.R. Tolkien to Jules Verne and further to Sherlock Holmes and Charles Dickens. And that is not the end of it.

Honestly, I voted for Taangali less for the setting itself - any thinly sketched setting can be made compelling depending how you fill it in - and more because I liked the idea of pushing oneself to move outside one's comfort zone. To enter a genre where you're not fully familiar with all the tropes and the biggest works in its canon. I think you get more out of it as a creative exercise even if you aren't necessarily overjoyed by the end product.

Thank you though for committing to exploring the other worlds more, even if it is in the form of supplemental content for world-building workshops. I did mention in the Orion Arm video that the aliens felt tacked on. The main reason I feel that way is because they vanish and fade into the background after humanity leaves Earth. Why make that creative choice?

I was really divided between Tyrrell and Orion Arm and while it's great that Orion Arm will be the worldbuilding project, I think Tyrrell should be saved too. Just shows how much potential fantasy has if it uses different time period as its inspiration.

My choice in the polls was much harder than I thought it was going to be, but I'm glad the setting you guys feel most comfortable working in is the one that won out (even though I personally cast my vote for The Taangali Wastes, the concept for which I think I may just have to steal and develop on my own for a TTRPG setting. I'm sure my players will love it). I'm excited for this project, to see where the Institute will take the Orion setting, and to see what exactly they will do now that they have their very own Space Soviet Union to work with! Also, I would LOVE to see realistic space combat ships depicted somehow. Not quick, aerial fighters, but rather slow orbital maneuvers performed by advanced computers. Combat focused on disabling communications, knocking out computers, or blowing small, penetrating attacks to pierce the inner atmosphere of a ship. The series Red Rising got kind of close to this in my opinion, but wasn't perfect.

Plus do you plan on addressing some of the concerns people had on the Discord about some of the more fucked up and questionable aspects of DoV? That was a big part of the concern some people like myself had with Orion Arm winning, since those aspects like the notion of the Nazis still being a faction in space or the CSA existing in space were incredibly sensitive subjects and I feel like we should have gotten more information on how those subjects were going to be handled before going ahead with the setting.

@@maryjames8433 Yeah! That's totally fair! Broadly, some of the issues with Dawn of Victory's setting came down to a lack of specialized knowledge and expertise in the, generally young and eurocentric, writing team. Subjects like the fate/future of Nazism, Fascism, Segregation, Colonialism, etc were not handled as delicately or with as much research, care, and mindfulness as those subjects warrant. There was a very strong dissonance between wanting to somehow have the thematic effect of incorporating factions like the Empire of Japan and the Greater German Reich - whilst also not wanting to glorify Fascist, Xenophobic regimes and beliefs. Even generally well-regarded settings like that of The Man In The High Castle stumble with this. There were some half-assed band-aids that contributors/writers (myself included) slapped on like "oo maybe there was a Werhmacht coup so it's only Prussian imperialism and not Nazism", etc. Which were, honestly, cop-out solutions where we weren't really dealing with engaging with the fundamental question of if a future for Fascism, Racism, etc should even be imagined in the first place - as imagining their continued existence lends them undue legitimacy and glorification.

And so the votes done. I'll admit, I came in wanting the space opera mil-scifi setting to win, but both Taangali and Tyrell suprised me. Sad to see them both lose. I'm pretty partial to the idea of a run-off vote where the top two choices would've competed. Question time for Not-Quite-Orion's-Arm: Can there be mechs?

Thing is though the votes were not that close, all of the voters for the third choice would have had to go to the second choice. Probably would not work since post apocalypse and sci Fi fans have a lot of crossover like fallout. If the difference had been closer maybe.

I do hope the institute takes a page out of the resistance series of games to flesh out that interwar- ww2 era where humanity was combating the hostile inter dimensional flora and fauna. It’s the only way (through reverse engineering and improving) I can see humanity going from nuking the entire planet to developing starships in a century and change. I hold out hope for Taangali, may even hope in the discord and find a grouppen.

I've got somewhat of a meta-question here: *What is the purpose of the world?* Is it for a novel, a tv series, a video game? And what would be the scope of that story? Would it be about frontline stories from the perspective of individual soldiers, are we going to tell a game of thrones style story about the geopolitics of a specific interstellar conflict, or are we going the Issac Asimov route and have a look at a nations development over the centuries? That's something I usually find missing in most worldbuilding content online. Worldbuilding in and of it self is pretty cool, but few people do it just for the fun of it. Most people come at it from a certain angle, and *that angle* is the most important aspect of their world, because it directs the worldbuilder's attention where it should be. And yet, almost nobody seems to be talking about it.

Orion arm was my third choice for sure, but it is important to play to your own strengths. I like your ideas in general and look forward to hearing anything about any of those settings. I think for me, the very issue is that I grew up with cold war ideologies clashing in real life so I don't especially want to have my escapism be another 20th century earth analog. That said, ANYTHING done well can overcome it's genre and I will definitely be subscribed to any channels you and your team make. And as a side note, I loved the art featured in all these videos so credit due to the contributors.

My biggest hope for this series is that the Symphaxi will make a return and be an important part of the story - they were the only thing that stood out to me about Orion Arm that was unique and interesting, otherwise it's just another generic sci-fi verse with another generic roster of reskinned political ideologies from real life, retreading the same political arguments we've seen a billion times, without a lot of distinct identity of its own. However, as a dejected Tyrell voter, I take solace in the fact that Templin's quality never disappoints regardless of what the topic is; as one of my friends put it, "if Templin is cooking us a classic steak, at least we know it'll be the best steak we've ever had".

I am extremely disappointed that Taangali did not win. Not only did it have a lot of potential, Mark said it was the most challenging setting to create and I think seeing how he would have overcome those challenges would have been very useful for a worldbuilding-focused series. I get that this channel's fanbase is mostly Mil-SF fans but at the same time we had two seasons of Stellaris Invicta and Im personally very bored of the Mil-SF genre. Taangali could have had elements of Mil-SF in it, with the wider galactic narrative, but instead we just get... yet another sci-fi setting that's, dare I say, interchangeable with so many others.

So I kind of forgot/ kept on putting off voting in the poll myself so oops. But honestly, which was a surprise to me as well, it was such a close toss up between Tyrell and the Orion Arm. The debate I was having Tyrell sounded like a great idea for an individual setting for a single author/ channel to go through and have their way with it...indeed it is pretty similar to some of the ideas I'm having for my own setting I'm working on...but the Orion Arm just felt more like a potential for having an 'MCU' type storytelling. Given how diverse the world feels it feels like almost anyone should theoretically come and be able to add their own stories if you guy decide to open it up like that. I also did a little jig when I saw you guys were thinking about doing another season of Stellar Invicta.

Did India became independent as a country or fractured due to the alien invasion? How was the Warlord Era in China resolved? What area became a no-go zone? Did it also include the airspace and if so, how did Southern and Northern Earth comunicate?

  • @DavidRichardson153

Even though I voted for it, I kind of hoped that Orion Arm would NOT be the winner. Yeah, I know, "So why vote for it?" It was mostly, if not entirely, out of being biased towards its genre - that, and still re-watching the Stellaris Invicta seasons. Having been a Star Wars fan my whole life (I still remember my excitement when the Special Edition on VHS was first announced - go ahead and call me "old" for that) with my introduction to Star Trek being when TNG was first being aired (after the first two seasons, mind you) with liking Strange New Worlds more than I thought I would, I am something for a sucker of military sci-fi and space opera. That is not to say I could not like or even want the other options - I sung my praises for them when they were pitched. I guess the Tangaali Wastes ultimately sounded a little too much like a hybrid between Fallout and Road Warrior and thus came in last. Maybe it can be explored more later on, but that is too speculative to bank on at this time. It is a shame but not really unexpected. Tyrrell, though, actually made me hopeful. I am so sick of the countless bare-bones lazy Tolkien-esque fantasies out there that my greatest hope for it was that it not be "medieval with magic," as I have heard some describe the style. Yes, there is plenty that can be done with it (I am really enjoying Frieren right now), so I was not worried about the Institute being lazy if Tyrrell was the winner. Despite my vote, I feel like Tyrrell probably most deserved to win. Maybe the final bit in the pitch made it sound like it was starting to morph into Warhammer - nothing inherently wrong with that, but I guess it can be difficult to make it distinct from such a franchise - and brought the pitch down, but that is merely my take. Oh well, it is what it is, and who knows, maybe if this series turns out good, the other choices will get another chance, and maybe we will also get other possible new worlds to build. Either way, I am already subscribed to the secondary channel, and I look forward to the points brought up.
