Firebase Hector | Dawn of Victory Worldbuilding Project

For a single moment in the Cold War, the most important place in the Orion Arm was a lone outpost surrounded by hostile jungle, an American fortress on a world under siege, named Firebase Hector.

After hearing that the universe would take large inspiration from the Cold War I was already hooked, now to see a sci-fi parallel to the Vietnam war is beyond my wildest expectations, even having similar dates is a nice touch and I hope to see more events inspired by those of our own history. Kudos to everyone who has worked on this project.

"Captain Hilltown. I suposse you want to make your report on your last patrol." "21 ANA killed in action. Nil on our side. Recovered a hundred plus rifles, 6 rocket launchers, 4 mortars, and enough ammunition and grenades to supply a company-strenght unit for a week. Booby-trapped half-a-dozen of the rifles, and destroyed the rest." "Ah. So according to you, when we are all going to die, exactly?" "This is the 3rd supply run my platoon has hit in 2 weeks. All of them converging up the hills. Not towards the coast, nor through the jungle. And with our patrols being as patchy as they have been getting, we can't begin to guess how much is getting through. ANA convoys moving equipment upriver can mean only one thing: offensive. They are stockpiling for a push, and when they do, it won't move towards the Three Cities. It will come straight through us. We're out here on our own, Colonel. We should be getting ready." "*Sigh*. Again with this. Captain, I thought we already had talked about..." "Sir, with all due respect. Even if I'm wrong, and as you say, these are merely performative attacks, it doesn't change our situation. Hector is undermanned. We are short of equipment and handarms munitions, and resupply is a bad joke. And the men know that. They figure if the people on the rear don't give a shit about the firebase, then why should they? And mantaining discipline without good sergeants has become increasingly difficult." "I know the situation in camp isn't the best. But the siege at Rosaria takes priority. As long as we can keep provinding effective artillery support over the valley, there isn't a real problem." "... No, of course not. We have no real problem. Yet. But by the time those artillery shells are ordered to hit inside Firebase Hector, we will have walked way past doing anything about it."

the problem with watching something like this is that i end up coming up with a whole slew of characters that will never see the light of day. I have started writing out a story in my head and now want to flesh it out, but cant because its not my world. Spectacular job writing this. I am excited for the future of this world.

I mean, they are saying that this whole project is more creating a setting than telling a linear narrative. I’m sure they are anticipating fan fictions set within the universe. Just because we aren’t the person who create the SCP wiki doesn’t mean you can’t add to it and something similar is likely to happen with this as it starts to coalesce more.

Has very little to do with Dien Bien Phu, the point of DBH was to force the Viet Minh out into the open and was lost because the French could not maintain airborne supply. DBH was also deliberately positioned in a valley This is Khe Sahn, with the attempt to interdict jungle supply, war of patrols, position on hillsides, and the questionable political and military value of the entire base

I see Outpost Restrepo in the Korangal Valley was a bit of an inspiration. My drill sergeant said the 15 months he spent in that valley were the worst 15 months of his life. This is from the renaming of a firebase after the death of a soldier garrisoned there. Happened twice in that valley with Restrepo and Vimoto. At least that was my first thought. Ofc Vietnam is the real inspiration

I absolutely loved this. I did see a comment critiquing a lack of different art work, which I'd like to disagree with. The chosen piece remaining centre stage (with some lovely animations), permits us to focus more on the narrator's work. Also I imagine that by using fewer original art works, budgetary constraints can be kept in check, permitting permits more content of this nature? Excellent work by all involved. I can't wait to consume more.

Just imagine, you're a grunt chilling in a trench at FB Hector. You're starving, you're sleep-deprived, you're drenched in sweat from the tropical climate. You've been bombarded so consistently that it no longer terrifies you, it just feels routine, so when you hear rounds incoming, at first you think nothing of it. You simply go to ground as you always have... But then you realise, these rounds... Sound different... They're not coming from across the hills, but from the sky itself. The orbital munitions strike the base around you and shake the very earth of Roseau worse than anything the ANA has hit you with so far. Shaking you out of your complacency. You look to your battle-buddies as you all come to the shocking realisation that you are now being fired on from orbit... A possibility the Army never truly prepared you for.

It could be worse. The Alarm Red goes off again. Grunting, groaning, wincing maybe at old or new injuries, you wake up from the half slumber as missiles, lasers, and gunfire spray the sky. ... something's off, though. The missiles aren't aiming for half arcs, the launchers aren't depressing. Some instinct of yours finally punches through the tired haze, screaming the suddenly obvious. Orbital firemissions. The starpoints of the missiles and glow of the guns roaring furiously to attrit the metal rain descending on the base sort of fades into the background. You grab your helmet, your vest, your pack, and fumble your rifle sling on. Beyond the wire, gunfire suddenly picks up. A missile corkscrews through the night to obliterate some part of the checkpoint nearby, mortar fire whistling down with anti air defenses roaring at them between long bursts at falling reentry vehicles. Thunder, lightning, lightning, thunder. Earthquake. Firebase Hector's ADA complement has been gradually drawn down; deployed elsewhere, withdrawn to depot, or moved to other fronts. Tracers zip to and fro, as the base's defenders take up the handles of machine guns and open another case of mortar shells.

When the United Front was formed humanity finally was shown what it could do when brother and sister stood united, hand in hand. Our optimistic beliefs about the human condition were validated, united we were strong. And the results spoke for themselves the existential threat to humanity was delayed if not wiped about. The human condition was shown. United humanity could stand together and embrace the future the workers of the world so dearly craved. But the bourgeois world wouldn’t allow it! Brothers and sisters, humanity was betrayed by the greed we know all too well. We see that reality every day! Comrades where are we?! Are we still on earth?! NO! Never forget what the bourgeois did to humanity. Because as soon as they themselves were out of mortal danger they condemned us all in favour of the profit motive… But do not despair! The benevolent state had the foresight needed to ensure the continuation of humankind and our way of life! Be grateful. You claim that the Old Guard has become useless, decadent even. You claim that the dangers of the past have waned, that the siege communist mentality should be purged. And that this mentality is supposedly quote en quote authoritarian. But that isn’t even the most laughable notion that the Red Kosmonauts hold! You claim that we can spare OUR most PRECIOUS resources just to make the lives of the common man a little better! YOU, the youth, have forgotten the dangers of the past that STILL linger on! You forget that we weren’t the only ones that had the necessary hindsight for space colonisation. Our enemies of the past have followed us, and they are still on our doorstep. This country need not forget its protection, the Old Guard is still here. -Transcript of a communist governor somewhere far away (I am really excited about this project, so excited that I just had to share this, well speech, I called up.)

This hit a little too close to IRL events with it being a almost direct parallel to a battle in vietnam and the combination of US Army-ANA-firebase hector since Hector was one of the the predesignated firepoints we had outside our fob for mortars and artillery incase of a attack on the fob... and it was the cross roads next to the ANA compound, so we were always extra watchful of that cause we really didn't trust the ANA since the only two attacks we had had on the fob were from guys in ANA uniform that they "claimed were not ANA but must have stolen the uniforms"

I’ll add an anecdote from my grandfathers own experience: “…Each morning, just prior to sunrise, a group of enemy mortar men would set up outside the boundary fence and lob a few rounds into the base. While a routine occurrence, it would force the base into a state of alert. Forcing awake, men who had already spent most of the night on watch. One day a group of the base’s artillerymen who had grown tired of the constant alerts and stand-downs every morning came up with a plan. They carefully sighted their 155mm artillery piece to a spot the mortar men had used a few days prior and waited patiently through the night. The next morning the predictable thuds of mortar fire were met with the roar of cannon. No remains were found of the enemy were ever found. Just a small bit of twisted meta was left to burry. The soldiers slept peacefully that following morning.”

That said, as some others have pointed out, the lack of music, the mostly static background, and the monotone tone of the narration can make it a bit of a slog. I'm not sure if I really like the fact that it is so close to reality. The idea of a cold war happening in a semi realistic space opera setting is intriguing, but this feels more like The cold war (the one in our earth) just being retold. Maybe it is just my expectations, but I imagined this universe more like a modern futuristic scenario in which familiar ideologies would be implied, instead of a retro-futuristic reteling of real history

This was great, I just have one point of contention. No matter how incompetent US military leadership got. They would not allow heavy fire assets within fire range of their important bases without sufficient defensive measures I mean even in the 2020s CRam puts in work.

this type of nonsense happened plenty during the Vietnam War, due to politcal and military incompetence, so I can see this as a possibilty happening a Firebase Hector because some pencil neck pushing Colonel thought that the 3 cities had no strategic value anymore and pulled a Biden Afghanistan maneuver and it end the same way.

A lot can change in 250 years Probably not possible to make a blanket statement such as "the us military would never x" The enemy gets a vote in your decision. It may simply be the case that while the leadership would never allow the enemy to get within range, the enemy did not care about the US's permission.

Imo, while the story, ambience, and interactive background are excellent, the lack of music and minimal art made the video feel very static, and thus it had trouble holding my attention. The presentation used in Templin's standard lore videos is a lot more engaging to me.

This is great! Who is the narrator though? Why aren't they credited in the description or something?🤔
