‘Big adventure’. I absolutely love that. My grandfather graduated from Oxford in the mid 60’s, he was a lucky man to be accepted from west Belfast. He moved my dad and uncles to the US in the 70’s so long story short, here I am. My grandmother, who has never lost her ulster accent, always explains her immigration as a Big Adventure. I’m not sure why that brought tears to my eyes but growing up I learned about the troubles in Northern Ireland. My grandfather settled in Orlando and using his Oxford degree, he was an engineer on many space projects, as that is central floridas main credit to fame. It’s known now here, if you get a good job at nasa or Lockheed Martin or Siemens, then you’ve done good. My grandfather was from west Belfast but has multiple space flight inventions credited to his name. I seriously can not explain to you how much the term ‘big adventure’ hits home for me and my family. God bless

I was looking for your vlog on the DAS pass and found this one. Really interesting hearing your story, we have been visiting the USA for the last 35 years and people used to ask us why we did not move there and I used to explain it was not that simple although we have family in Washington DC and friends in Michigan who would have sponsored us the health cost always worried us. So glad it all worked out for you and thanks for your advice on your vlogs about the airports etc in Orlando even though we have been many times I have found them useful as things are always changing.

Really enjoyed listening to your story of how you fell in love with the USA and Florida, ours is a different one which started in April 1994. Our youngest daughter contracted Leukaemia in December 1992 and the "Make a Wish" Foundation granted Carla's wish to go and visit Micky Mouse while staying at Give Kids the World village in Kissimmee. Carla passed away in December 1994 and although we lost her, she gave us our love of Florida as she was so happy here. Also why our villa is called "Wishes".

Good tips on moving to USA/Orlando. Its definitely a dream for a lot of people but not as easy as I thought and expensive to live there by the sounds of it. I love the idea of going to disney or Universal after work or just to be able to go in the evenings or weekends. Sounds great. My aunt and uncle live in Skipton. He used to go around to different shows competing in competitions after growing his own vegetables. Thank you for the lovely canal walk. We bounced around the world via my husbands career as an R&D Electronic/Electrical engineer mainly with large US companies. Being adventurous and willing to leave family behind plays a big part. Avoided Silicon Valley for as long as possible but ended up there in 1996 and have been here ever since (we are in our mid 60s). It is a big adjustment and there are things that still drive me nuts. But there are many pluses as well. As a product of an E2 visa kid 😅 I want to add that in order to qualify for the E2 it has to be an existing business that you purchase that hires US Citizens. You also have to have an astronomical amount of Working Capital in order to even be considered. It’s also worth noting that with the E2, any children that you have must either be enrolled in College (paying international rates, ouch!), get married, be sponsored by a US company or go home once they turn 21. It’s cruel, but a very real reality. My Mum and Dad worked their behinds off in order to make it work, and sold almost everything we owned to make the dream come true. That was 20yrs ago. I since met my husband over here and was able to sponsor them to be able to become citizens. It’s absolutely not for the faint at heart, it’s a big leap of faith. I’m thankful they took that chance . I now live in Orlando with my wonderful husband and two beautiful children ♥️

Enjoyed that. We have just moved from Wigan UK to Orlando this Feb 2022. We love it here. I am an ICU nurse working in AdventHealth Orlando. It is an amazing lifestyle here that most Americans take for granted. I lived here for nearly 6 yrs back in 1996 till 2001. Unfortunately though the vast majority of British Trained nurses can no longer work in the USA since around 2000. The EU destroyed the nurse curriculum by removing pediatric psychiatric and obstetric modules from the general training thus making UK nurses ineligible to take the NCLEX state board exam. I was lucky back in 1995 and did the older training. We are here to stay now. No going back!

You can’t leave the country for a considerable amount of time either otherwise you loose permanent residence status. Health insurance is very expensive there. Thank goodness for our NHS you talk about the planes, but wasn’t it great to see the space shuttle go off back in the day? But the sonic booms when it landed was something else. I didn’t like the alligators and snakes when I lived in Orlando.

Interesting story/journey. What do you do about a pension? I assume you have one through work but if you’re just retiring there, how does your U.K. personal pension come into play? Are you still entitled to it or do you have to transfer the fund to a US provider? I was going out to LA quite a bit about 10 or 11 years ago & I really liked it there. I’m not a fan of heat by any stretch but it’s a dry heat rather than the humid heat you find in Florida. I liked San Diego & Santa Monica too. Not that it’s ever likely to happen but the idea was a romantic one 😂

I enjoy your vlogs very much. I do have a question for you. You decided to become full citizens here. I wonder if it was mostly so you could vote. Voting becomes a big deal here and it seems like elections are constant news now. Twenty years ago, most elections had similar candidates, not a huge change like now, where the next president deletes everything the last one incorporated and then 4 years later the new does the same. Was it because your lives are changed by who is empowered now that you decided to become full citizens, in order to have a voice in elections? That would make sense to me.
