Join us, Daphne and Ian, as we embark on our new chateau renovation projects! This week, Ian cuts back the farmhouse overgrowth and our good friend Francis pays us a visit to inspect the integrity of the roof. We make more progress in the chateau garden and Daphne finds an illustration of our chateau from the mid 1600's!
Our beau chateau (The 500-year-old, Chateau De Lesigny), is located near Paris, France. Most of the structures around the chateau domain need a full restoration, so we are investing everything we have into making the property thrive! We are learning more about french culture and developing new skills along the way!
As a French/American UC Berkeley graduate in Agriculture (Daphne), and a U.S. Air Force Tactical Response Force Veteran/ Kinesiologist (Ian), we share a love for challenges and adventure. We have a long road ahead of us and we are excited to share the experience with you!
You can support our renovation projects by joining our Patreon Community, where you can also gain access to exclusive videos and behind the scene access with Daphne and Ian! All patron funding is used to renovate this historical French Chateau. Every patron is paramount to our chateau renovations and we thank you all tremendously!

Every time I see a new Chateau DIY channel, I hesitate because I think I have enough subscriptions. But then I remember it's a chance to start all over again on a new journey of discovery. This video is an example of that. Such great finds in this video concerning the Chateau history. That's what I love about these channels. I wish you luck in continuing to unravel the history of the property. I'll be watching.

Sooo true! It's amazing how different they all are even though they all are chateau diy or renovations. Have you run across Dan's new project..... he literally only has the walls! No roof on floors or really anything much left of the building. It's going to be epic to see how he manages to rebuild that chateau over the next years.

@@thickernell it will be a challenge for sure but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing his slow progress! I saw a series on KZread were a guy in the US bought an 'abandoned mansion' and renovated it. It went alot faster then I expected and he had to remove alot of the building and replace it because of water damage. It was a typical American wood frame house so that might have helped make it so fast to build. That build gives me hope that Dan might finish before his boys grow up so they can at least live some of their childhood in the house.

Near to Worcester, England there is the ruin on an old mansion, Witley Court. Extremely unlikely the building will be restored, however, during research of all the documents they found the plan for the gardens of 150 years ago. The garden has been redeveloped from the grass overgrowth, following the garden plan but in simplified way. Lovely to see the 1600 etching of your chateau to give you ideas for your garden.

What if you lined your big squares with boxwoods and planted David Austin roses in the center. They are magical. For Spring interest you could plant tulips and daffodils. Alliums are also great. I would do some research on French and Italian Renaissance Gardens. Trimming boxwoods is time consuming. Roses are expensive and some need dead heading. Maybe the big squares need to be subdivided or you cut the squares by a half circle, put grass in, line the outer perimeter with boxwoods and only fill the triangles with roses. Maintenance, water requirements and irrigation need to be considered when restoring the gardens. When you restore the fountain, check if you can have frost free faucets put in. The waterlines are installed below the frost line. Check cost for an irrigation system or drip irrigation. You would need power to the area to run the sprinklers and timers. Could you have a well dug for irrigation and to keep future watering bills down?

Have you heard of sump oil? It is old oil from cars, trucks or machinery. It is perfect to put on the top of the stump of ivy when you cut it back as far as you can. Can be got from any garage where mechanics work usually for free as they are glad to get rid of it. I have also used it on wooden fence posts and rails, to prevent them getting weathered and rotting away.

Yes, they were old turrets! In our last video, Ian cleaned out the stairs leading down inside one of them and we got to walk in there for the first time! It is so sad to know the original design has been removed, but we have had some ideas for how to make use of them now. One idea is to build medieval style fire pits on the top so we can have a big circular seating arrangement and a nice warm place for cocktails 😊

Ladybugs have special meaning for me. One morning when I was 4 years old I asked my mother what had made the lower screen on the screen door all black. She said to go out on the steps and look at the other side. It was very odd to me that the bottom screen was black because the Sun was very bright and it was warm out. When I went outside and turned to see what made the screen entirely black , it was a miraculous magical massive swarm of Ladybugs. I was Delighted and stood for a long time watching them. They sparkled like Gemstones in the Sun light . Every time I saw a Ladybug or more throughout my over 70 years of life I feel that Joy in the memory of that morning. These past ten or so years where I live , at least one or two Ladybugs show up in my home when the weather turns cold . Such a childish comfort to me. Am enjoying your Chateau restoration work. Just found your Videos. All the buildings , the most , and gardens are Lovely . Namaste . Carpe Diem. Anne Minnick , Massachusetts, USA. By the way Lilac hedges might be quite beautiful for outer garden border areas and the scent is so Wonderful .

In Fall, ladybugs conglomerate to hibernate. They like to hide in corners of house windows or anywhere it's warmer than the exposed surfaces. They can be a little bit of a pest if you allow them into the house over winter because you'll have a gazillion of them! Once a ladybug has found a warm spot in your home it sends a message to others to do so too! Contrary to popular belief, the amount of spots on its shell does not indicate its age. There are actually over 5,000 species of ladybugs. The spots and the amount of them, the color of the shells, indicate what species they are. So, if you know of a host plant that usually has loads of aphids during summer, put a few ladybugs there. They love those pesky aphids!

I love everything about this channel. Francis is a gem. It's always something about very old buildings that needs attention. I am hoping you get enough people watching to make some extra $$ so at some point you can hire a crew to do some of the heavy lifting. Good job on finding the garden markers. The old pictures were fabulous a great find. As a old history educator I adore old architecture and the history that accompanied it. God love your grandfather for acquiring this property and bequeathing it to you. He must have known you would be an excellent caretaker for the property and add your own history. Well done Daphne and Ian 😉

Thank you!! Francis is the best! He is a very kind soul and always goes above and beyond. We are lucky to have his help. If we get enough of a following on KZread then we hope to move forward with the more costly renovations on the domain, but for now we are happy to start within our budget and learn new skills along the way 😊 Thank you for joining us for the journey, Terri! Have a wonderful day!

Greetings from a fellow Bay Area Californian! Your discovery of the original size of the chateau is very interesting! I am a fairly new subscriber, but each time I saw the aerial view of the chateau I'd think; that doesn't look right. It looks out of balance, like half of it is missing. Turns out it is missing. Do you know what happened to the other part of the Chateau? Are there ruins under the lawn? Absolutely love what you are doing. So much respect for both of you.

Amazing discoveries. With a place so large, a palace, you would think there would be more documented history. Maybe you can ask The Pethericks (Billy) if your chateau is highlighted in his book of of documented chateaus.

Hi guys. Thank you for sharing this daunting journey to restore a lovely chateau. May I suggest, when it comes to what looks like random trees or shrubs, trimming them first, then in the spring/summer, get a clear identification on them to know if they were intentionally planted, or volunteers. Your infrastructure repair and maintenance future would be better supported by investing in those big service machines like a chipper/shredder, a proper tractor, and a digger. Obviously items to plan, budget and save for future purchase. This is SO much work for only two people, and a limited budget. I commend your determination and steady approach. The garden parameters are remarkable. 💕 Having a restored and functioning old world fountain would be amazing, and good for the overall health of you and the garden! ...and Lady Bugs equal prosperity and good luck! 🐞 If you please, your canine family member...what breed?

The wonderful tool you were using to find the boundaries is named a Pulaski for the man, Ed Pulaski that invented, some say reinvented, it. He was famous for saving the lives of 45 firefighters in a wildfire in 1910 in Idaho. I think it’s important in a vlog discovering the history of your home to remember people in history that have contributed in meaningful ways.

Ladybugs versus Asian Lady Beetles. They both eat aphids and their eggs but have to watch the beetles, they bite. One must watch them near grape arbors as they can secrete a foul-smelling yellow fluid and it can alter the taste of the wine. After watching some of your videos I can definitely say you both are not afraid of hard work.

They’re not ladybugs! 🐞 Those are Asian Lady Bettle and are generally considered a nuisance as they can bite and stain surfaces with they’re yellowish secretions (if disturbed), but they’re harmless. They’re usually orange with or without spots. Not as cute and friendly as ladybugs but they seemed to really like you 😜
