For those who don’t have the option of pulling an engine more or less just for fun, I can’t recommend getting an oil analysis enough. Take a sample of your oil, either between services or while changing the oil, and mail it off to the lab. It’s a great low financial cost and low time cost option. They can detect trace amounts of metals and identify issues before you even notice an issue, such as hearing a problem.

Helpful tip for anyone trying to remove a pull type release bearing so you can reinstall. Press down on the release bearing so it compresses into the pressure plate, then insert a flathead screwdriver in between the bearing and the pressure plate and twist and the bearing will be able to be removed. Then you can chuck it back on the gearbox input snout like a new one would go and reinstall.

  • @jibbsey

Can't you just remove the pivot shaft from the fork and remove the fork from the bearing like normal on an STI 6spd? Then just remove the bearing from the pressure plate assembly once the motor is out?

I had a forged CP Piston EJ257 in my old 07 Legacy and that thing sounded like a diesel engine, that was with the required .003" piston to wall clearance, stock is .0015 IIRC. I ran it for nearly 100k before just retiring it for a rust free 06 Legacy. This time around I just went with a stock new short block when building it. I enjoy the quite engine as a daily and it really doesn't need the forged pistons for what I'm doing with it. :)

When i first watched this video before bed last night, my immediate thoughts before even getting 2 mins into the video (after listening to the ticking/rattling noise) was that it was something to do with the rockers. But its good that you did a partial tear down just to visually inspect the engine as you did throw the whole car together rather quickly.

That oil pressure after the oil change looked awfully high.Don't know if that is intentional, or if something has blocked up part of the oil system - spun bearings, swarf in the galleries, etc. Too high a pressure always makes me think there's too little oil flow somewhere.

Better to be delayed a couple of days versus having to pull the engine again. Note to the comment section: When installing an EJ/EZ always check for clutch engagement prior to finishing the install and plumbing all your lines up. Will save you a lot of headache.

As soon as I heard the noise, it sounded *exactly* like my old EJ25's valves, right now. One valve is out of lash, and it sounds like a lot of tappa tappa until it warms up. Whenever I pull it for the leaky rear main (third time in 3 months because i'm a doofus), it's getting another adjustment. It'll be fine. The bigger issue for me is gonna be the 4EAT slamming every time it downshifts to get up a hill or to pass. That's tiring. Gotta put in my spare valvebody, and rebuild the old one.

  • @Levibetz

The thing I've noticed about forged pistons is that unless you're really putting it under load, they don't actually warm up and stop slapping. Like a daily driver with forged pistons, the slap will be more dependent on weather than coolant temp. So towing with forged pistons, that probably warmed them up nicely and were nice and quiet. You might find in future that cruising around unloaded they may slap again.

Funny you ended up suspecting the valve clearances, I was joking to myself that it had the same issue my 2000 Kawasaki Ninja ZX9r had after rebuilding the top end. It started, was noisy, thought "it's fine, probably the CCT", gave it a little blip of the throttle and the noise got much worse. Turned out to be the only shim I didn't need to change had somehow dislodged from its place (didn't know these were shimless), so it must have been on top of the valve spring, and caused one of the collets to come out, luckily just the one. Although the valve had dropped slightly it seems there was no damage, I replaced the collets, put it back together and all has been fine since.

played the tappet game before mzr motor. i am still finding buckets in my garage randomly. thats what happenes when you drink and shim a head. i was luckey my rod knock turned out to be a fubared camshaft journal. new head and a set of race cams fixed what was diagnosed by multiple experianced mechanics to be rod knock!!!!! if i never fixed my valve cover leak i wouldnt of seen the scoring. did all the work myself and boom got another 6k miles out of that before it as sold.
