    Very Nice Vikkie, looks great! With your skills & enthusiasm I'm sure you will make a great success of this. But still I can't but help to think of the old joke about the 2 happiest days for a boat owner. The day you buy the boat, and the day you sell the boat. I had a boat when I lived in southern California in a salt water marina. Everything had to be stainless steel.

    Been involved with a boat or two in my past ..... 2 things jump out at me! 1. Solvo Autosol. Basically sold in motor shops, this is a toothpaste consistency metal polish that will put a mirror finnish on all flat metals (we used to use it for Aluminium on bikes) so will give you a whole new sink for the cost of a couple of quid and a light coating of elbow grease! Use sparingly and you will be amazed at the result and at how many surfaces you suddenly realise could do with a quick polish ;o) 2. Throw your paper logs away (or burn them and look at the huge amount of ash they produce!) .... the ash is great on damp cloth to clean the burner glass. Chose whether to burn coal or wood (don't mix the two) Wood is easier to light and burns hotter, coal (or smokeless briquettes, but coal is better) burn cooler but a lot longer and the reduced heat may be a good thing in a boat! Buy a magnetic thermometer to go on the flue so you can adjust the burner to optimum settings ..... Coal has the air going in the bottom and wood from the top to ignite the gasses given off by the wood. Leaving the door ajar when first lighting the burner will give a good draw and aid the lighting process, but once lit the door should only be open to add fuel. Check the fire rope seal of the door isn't leaking as it should not smell when working properly! A Carbon Monoxide alarm is a must too ... especially if you go to sleep with the fire still lit! It is heavier than air so will pool in the bilge and slowly rise up ... Hans is both more susceptible to CO poisoning and lower than you when sleeping! Having said that there is nothing quite like a night watching the faries and dribbling in front of a good woodburner ;0) If you run out of projects for the boat (I know ... not for a long time!) you might look at putting a vent into the area at the back of the burner from the bilge and at the other end of the boat to give a better airflow which will cut down on your condensation problems.

    I'm back again 😂 And sorry I didn't realise I hadn't replied! Just been doing a few mins of KZread video research on it and already spotted Autosol! I have a polisher/buffer machine... do you think that's overkill? And thanks for the fire tips! We're still getting used to it- although because we get a constant supply of offcuts from my Dad's woodyard, it's very tempting. But our narrowboat neighbour said exactly the same thing... he uses coal only as wood gets way too hot.

  • @totherarf

    @totherarf

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Check your burner to see ..... some do wood only, some dual fuel! It is important to only burn one at a time though! Coal is cooler but lasts longer wood gives you the Faeries to watch is hotter but also burns out quicker .... especially off cuts ..... but as with most things it is in the detail! Cut your air intake down just right and you can control the heat of the burn and get those super slow motion flames going down the window. The reward of a job well done! A buffing machine IS overkill with Autosol though .... unless you are filming it! ;o)

    We were looking at a larger motorhome a couple of years ago, too. But camping gets so popular, it's hard to find spaces and there's increasing height barriers being put up. After hiring a narrowboat, it felt like we could explore the same places again, but from a different perspective!

    I'd add pull-out wire baskets in the kitchen cupboards so you don't have to scrabble about for stuff at the back. Also consider a combi microwave/grill/oven to use when on mains and save running the gas grill and oven. Maybe add some metal hoops around the hob so pans can't get knocked off? For exercise, weld a mount on the roof to hold a bike so you can do spinning then use the bike when moored. Def. needs some white paint even just on the ceiling, that beige everywhere would drive me mad

    When you convert then table to a bed consider putting the narrow fill pieces next to wall. I have used Flitz drill powered buffing balls and Flitz metal polish to shine up my stainless steel sink. It will deep clean and polishes to whatever level of reflectivity you want. The buff ball is expensive, but worth it. I bought my decades ago when they were much cheaper. Use minimal metal polish, otherwise it will be ejected out and go places you don't want to have to clean. A big consideration for your moving the stove is what is the fuel source. Gas plumbing not as easy to move. My biggest recommendation is don't rush into major changes. Have a several months of living in the space to really see how it is to use it as is.

    I think you'll find 'The Peacock' will have been the boats original name. I'm planning to buy a narrow boat in the near future, a lot of boats on sale are in need of updating so your project will be interesting to follow. Solvo Autosol for the sink, a light coating, let it dry, use a dry cloth to remove residue and dirt then buff up to the shine you like. It will come up like new. Good luck with the project.
