we have the absolutely nosiest neighbours in the world, we did the ranch sliders, erm few bubbles there, bought more film, the mirrored one like yours and now that i have watched yours i feel confident that we can tackle the rest of the house, street facing, kitchen and bedrooms here we come, privacy will be ours

I didn't fancy tackling this job on our boat, so we had an automotive tinting company do it for us. Okay it was 400 quid but I didn't have to do anything and the result was good. I admire your ability to tackle this very frustrating task and document it at the same time. Respect! 👍

So happy we only have little round portholes on our narrowboat - that looks complicated! But well done on a successful job Vikkie 👏 👍

That Kärcher definitely wasn't happy, seeing how it screamed. Well done in the end, and a lot learned! Frankly, this is the first time I saw this kind of stuff at all! Interesting material. Thanks for sharing!

Lol... yes, I don't think the Karcher was the best tool for the job. It might have been better on the ones I cut down to size though. It's the kind of material you have to try for yourself and have a variety of squeegees to see which you prefer.

First, I watched this video and had high anxiety just watching. Anyhow let me start with I live in Orlando where every window is tinted to keep heat out. Here’s some tips that may help. Keep window and film covered in soapy water for easier adjustment . It’s easier if you have another person spraying as soon as an area dries. Smooth out film with a sponge working from the middle out to get all the bubbles gone. Cut the film as close to the window size as possible to avoid letting air in. Cut final trim with a straight edge and razor. I used scalpel. You did great And you already learned some of the tricks the hard way. Hope this helps for the next time or anyone else.

Oh, I never thought about using a spirit level on a boat. It makes sense that they would be useless much of the time, since it's totally dependent on how the boat is sitting in the water at the time. Very interesting.

To be honest, I've never tried either. I've watched loads of videos where they've said there's no point! I suppose it helps when it's out of the water and propped up on something flat.

I've had some of this for two weeks now - to try initially on a bedroom window - but keep putting off fitting as i've read its not easy - but you've just inspired me to get my finger out - I also understand it can help in reflecting heat on hot days helping to keep insides cooler - which was also a good selling point for me - thanks for sharing - take care

I used to have a VW Kombi and tinted the windows myself, I felt all the frustration that I felt doing that job again when watching your first attempt, I must admit to using my entire swear vocabulary doing that job.😂

So glad I did it a way I was comfortable with in the end. Didn't want the rest to go to waste and had got so far after cleaning the windows thoroughly lol

This is a tough job. I've always lived in very sunny parts of the US and have always tinted my car windows. It's an art to be able to do this and make it look easy. I just recently built a carport to cover my parking. It's very sunny here in Denver but we also get hail. I ended up using polycarbonate panels for the roof. But you did a great job and I'm glad you posted it.

I can imagine car windows being an absolute pain! Do they also work on windows that open and close? I can imagine it pushing back when closing.

The only thing that I did differently whilst covering those glass quarter lights above my internal doors was to add a drop of baby shampoo into the water and dish soap solution. It made fitting a little easier. That was a tip from a vinyl van decal fitter. I also cut the whiteout vinyl to size before fitting and used caulk around the edges for a perfect finish.

Totally felt your pain too, so glad you've saved future pain for others! By the way, the one room I've used this privacy glass is coincidentally the only room where one of my aloe vera plants died ..... As you probably tell by now, it does offer privacy at the expense of some wavelengths ...

Lol... I spotted a pic earlier of someone putting a sign in their window saying "you're the reason I can't sit around in my pants" 😝

To be fair, I lived in a studio flat at the landlords back garden, the bathroom window was just a regular glass window meaning they could see everything I was doing while in the bathroom, I went to the diy shop, got frosted film, and boom, finally had privacy in bathroom.

Perfect! And it's a probably a great product to easily remove and leave the property exactly how you got it in the first place :)

I used a paint prep tool to take the beading off to do mine. Smaller windows are easier as they pop out, just remember the shims.Gives a chance to clean all the rubber edges too. Was far quicker 7 accurate as the overlap doesn’t matter.

Thanks! I was thinking on the day about how removing the internal beading would be better. If I were going to that effort, I'd probably want to buy proper tinted glass 😂

I could see the frustration on your face. I will remember to cut the film the size of the window if I should have to do this. Not looking forward to doing it though. I once did a car window and it was definitely a pain. Always good to see you. Take care till next time, and thanks for sharing.

Haha... hated it to start off with lol.... had to cut some swearing out when I tore it 😝 But cutting the exact size makes it a joy!

Apply the dilute washing up liquid to the film and then put it on the window. Just a thought.

Well done for persevering and finding a better way. I found the same thing as you, works better if cut to size, or only one edge over long. And as others have said, a little drop of detergent/shampoo helps.. When I put film on my workshop windows, and bathroom windows, at home I nearly gave up too. Then I decided to just take the double glazing units out and stand each on a towel in the shower to lay the film on in there. It meant I could keep it wet, and then slice off excess afterwards before refitting the glazing into the frames! I did a friend's recording studio in the same way. It also means the edges of the film are hidden under the window seals.

Perfect Fit Blinds are now installed too 👌 In fact, we haven't even closed the curtains since. They're just decoration now 😂

Johnsons baby shampoo and water mix is the best stuff for lubing the film and window, also I think your spreader wasa little on the big side, main thing is you persevered and got the job done.

@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I would use that large plastic blade as a razor guide. Starting in the center of the pane, push the sharp straight edge tight into the corner. Then you can score the film multiple times, if needed, all on the same line. Carefully shift to the side, check the film's alignment and repeat, scissoring off chunks as you go. I'd also recommend the best razor blades you can get. I use titanium-edged blades from Lenox for utility knives. I do side work as a handyman and I still have about 15 blades left of the 100-pack I bought about 20 years ago. Very sharp, very durable. A scalpel with extra blades would work well, too, and gives more precise control.

as someone who has tinted out the back windows on my last 2 cars ( keeps my gear out of sight & dogs cooler ) i fully know the frustration of this job .. but you got there

Hot Air gun helps but you have to be careful! I always cut the film roughly to size fist . Easiest way is to stick the film to the outside of window using your soap solution . Cut it to shape using a snap off craft knife . Then take the film inside 👍🏻

I used a lot of this to reduce radiant heat in computer rooms (which it does do very well) over time it shrank about 1cm all round.

Always smooth out from the centre outwards, never top to bottom or side to side. That way you push any air away from the film.

I used the frosted static film by d-c fix, very frustrating job... never seems quite perfect

It only does that because the lights are on inside. The film doesn't actually stop you seeing through it, it just acts as a reflector. I've fitted the same type of film on doors with glass panels and windows in security environments to stop people looking into security control rooms etc. You can compensate by fitting the film on the outside as well but that isn't always possible.

I have translucent blinds on my narrow boat, on the side of the cut they are up but on the towpath side they are nearly always down. I have found for some reason passerby’s on the towpath think they have some god given right to stare in 🙄

We've heard quite a few stories from our neighbours how people think they can stare in... jump on the gunnells etc. But it is weird to cook in the kitchen, moored in the marina and see them doing the same lol

What's wrong with some nice frilly net curtains? 😂 That looked awkward, it would have driven me batty, nice job.

Lol... thankfully not-so-frilly curtains are already installed 😆 But it does make you conscious when they can still have a gap in the centre when closed. Need to order those perfect fit blinds ASAP so I can feel fully at home :)

Dont use a stanley knife - Always a fresh scalpel. If you watch a pro do it on a car, they cut the film to size on the outside of the window with all the backing still attached then move it to the inside. Tried it once - never again!

You have to be careful with that method in case the seals are wider outside. Whatever blade you use, make sure it’s stainless steel as that doesn’t scratch glass.

I'm currently editing a boat tour to show the before stage, so I can reflect back later with the after footage and ask for tips regarding our plans. I do find a lot of narrowboat videos are starting to appear samey now it's become very popular. I hope mine are different of course lol
