It is true that Otto is a weird character. Maybe he and Subaru are bound by fate simply because Otto is destined to be in the Emilia camp in the so called "Envy route" which is the canon story? I don't know. So Otto could possibly be linked to Pandora? Maybe the mischievious witch of vainglory turned herself into Otto in order to watch Subaru's struggle, I don't know. If that is the case, though, good for her she did turn into a male because Subaru is a lolimancer.

Yeah Otto is pretty suspicious, and can we talk about how weird his timing was in the anime as well? Remember in season 1 episode 14 when Rem left Subaru in the Inn, Otto was sleeping and drunk in a pub. Remember that this was the tardiest Subaru had ever been trying to go back to the mansion due to the While Whale showing up in Lifaus Highway so they had to take a longer route. But somehow, Otto was still alive in that route and this was *after* the Witchcult's attack. Now lets get to my other point, in Subaru's most successful route, Otto was captured by the witchcult *before* they even attacked in Episode 24, not to mention that we never saw his body with Petelguese's fingers nor the villagers dead corpses in episode 15. I guess the part where Julius guarded the road fucked up their entry and Otto decided to take a detour instead but got captured. But it wasnt specified where Otto was before that so im confused how he ended up in Arlam village. Wouldnt that mean that Otto was near the Arlam village to begin with? His decisions are questionable here. Otto was also there when the White Whale started attacking all the merchants, I guess Subaru dragged him that time but its weird that both Otto and the White Whale disappeared for no apparent reason. Next is Arc 5, Otto was trying to restore the gospel for some reason like you said, its hella shady. He was also the first one to realize Ley's authority when even Ram and Anastasia had difficulty figuring it out in Arc 6 without Subaru interfering. It was also heavily implied by Meili that he looks weak, even Garfiel who can gauge someone's powerlevel accurately just by looking at them was fooled. The only remaining things that keeps my trust in Otto is his positive relationship with Patrasche and him sacrificing his life for Subaru. Speaking of Patrasche, it was Otto that kept Patrasche away when the battle started in Pristella. How is Patrasche even contained by a normal stable when Subaru is in danger. If we're basing with her attitude, she would either destroy the stable and run towards Subaru or anyone she knows but she is somehow kept away effectively. And his shit luck isnt pretty shit either if he found Reinhard by chance despite of the chaos. What kind of shit luck lands you to be near the God himself. And he even survived the initial confrontation with Roy. Bruh I cant believe im saying this but Otto is shadier than Roswaal.

In Arc 5, I do agree that his trying to restore the gospel is very strange despite Subaru being like "oh, okay". However, I think that him realising that Gluttony's authority had taken effect was simply because he's extremely shrewd. It helps that Otto and the group were more prepared for Gluttony's presence and it was more obvious when multiple people with clothes from the mercenary group 'suddenly showed up' and Gluttony started taunting the leader with their memories, as opposed to only a silver-haired half-elf 'showing up' and telling them to run away. Also, he *is* weak. He utilizes his smarts to get through dangerous situations, which is evident throughout the story. Otto is stronger than Subaru, but his strength is nothing compared to that of Emilia or Garfiel. He survived the initial confrontation with Roy because there were a shit ton of other people helping him and Gluttony ended up leaving. I don't really understand what you're talking about with Reinhard. When did he find Reinhard?? Also, luck is obviously not everything. Otto just has generally bad luck. I think you've kind of misunderstood Otto.

It was when he was on his own and could die at any corner that he turns in at Pristella, and he just so happens to stumble upon Reinhardt. And I'm fairly certain that he played a fairly important role in mitigating the drama happening in the Astrea family with Heinkel and Reinhardt, which for a merchant is awfully impressive considering his stature as a drifter merchant; a commoner with no nationality at best. Whatever the case Bad luck is probably what keeps Otto involved in the story, in general, meeting any of the sin archbishops is the epitome of bad luck, let alone encountering all of them gathered to one city. Whether it's bad luck or not depends on the readers or his subjectivity, because he's weak it is bad luck; He's just smart enough to learn how to deal with the issues that show up. What I can agree on, is that he is a very inconsistent character. At least with superficial things like Luck. Finding Reinhardt in a city like Pristella, which is under siege from an Authority specialized in killing WHOLE CITIES without dying is far from bad luck, it's a *miracle* on its own.

In arc 3, I believe the whole witch cult capture was because he was with the merchants when the whole “please go and save the villagers we will pay you” job was given, and since Otto was in debt he rushed as fast as he could because he probably thought that if he got there early he’d get paid more. He used his abilities which was actually to his detriment since Sloth hadn’t been defeated yet. In almost all routes, Otto jumps at chances to make money to settle his debt and gets killed for it. when he brings Subaru to the mansion in the first loop the witch cultists bow to Subaru and then head to kill Otto. In the other route w/ the whale he’s driven insane and then killed by the cultists. When they get there late, he’s at the pub. When they get there early, he’s with the merchants and not yet entirely depressed from being in debt to the point of drinking. Both times he comes across the cult cuz they haven’t been defeated. Im not sure why u think the timeline is weird? Idk. In all those routes, Subaru is his closest path to salvation from the debt. It could also one fate as well, that two similar ppl come across one another. I know he’s supposedly absent from the tome of wisdom, like Rem is, who’s also embroiled in a theory where she was never meant to exist as well.

​@@horence2360 You're overestimating the importance of luck, and underestimating Otto as a character. Characters in Re:Zero do not get past obstacles because they're 'lucky'. For instance, you could say Subaru breaking the Arc 4 dead end was incredibly lucky, but that luck is not narratively important. Subaru decided to stop treating his life as worthless, stop putting his allies on a pedestal, and stop relying on RbD to solve his problems. As a result of his positive growth, he got past those problems. If Re:Zero wasn't a story, Subaru would probably be an IF Subaru. His growth would be worthless and wouldn't prevent him from getting deadlocked. However, Re:Zero *is* a story. It aims to cultivate his character, so when he grows he also overcomes obstacles in his way. It's the same with Arc 5. Otto found Felt camp because he was supposed to. He had to be injured there so that he wouldn't be able to go to the Pleiades Watchtower. This seems obvious, and I don't understand your fixation on his 'bad luck'. Otto's 'bad luck' was just situations he was involved in being bad, not because of his character but rather external factors he had no way of knowing about or controlling. Since Otto is incredibly smart and cunning (as well as a great merchant), he should be in a much higher position. This was prevented because of his 'bad luck'. He's not 'just a drifting merchant'. The fact that you don't pay any attention to his actual character makes me wonder if you've even read the novel. And, your view of luck is very shallow. Luck in and of itself is an imaginary concept; a way for people to communicate the outcome of things beyond their control. And Tappei places very little importance on luck. But, you're saying everything is the outcome of luck. This is just not true. For instance, Otto encountered the Sin Archbishops because he decided to stay in Emilia camp despite the danger. Tappei stated himself that if Emilia camp wasn't there, the Archbishops wouldn't have been there either. That is not luck at all. And, if he truly had such omnipotent 'bad luck', he would be dead. If you think about everything as an outcome of luck, the fact that he got past all of those obstacles is good luck (despite the fact that it was his efforts). In the first place, 'good luck' and 'bad luck' are subjective and differ according to each person's perspective. TL;DR: You're wrong.

I think Otto is another Anomaly like Rem, even the Tome of Wisdom were unable to predict them thus they are a crack in reality. But dunno, Tappei is crazy with plot twists and lore I wouldn't be surprised if Otto was really an enemy

light eyes can easily change color. So otto having blue in one and gray in next is completely normal and doesnt have to be seen as an inconsistency. my own eyes go from blue to gray to green. They are mostly grayish green. As a child i had sky blue but not anymore.

Anyways its in arround 15% of cases where you have light eyes and they change darker when you grow up. It usually changes just a little blue to gray, gray to green, its rare that they go full brown. It usually happens form the ages of 2 to 10. The most common ways for light eye color to change is when lighting changes. The second most common is your eye color changing with mood, the lighter the better. And then there is that your eyes can get way darker if you are very very angry, this can happen to about 50% of people (even to brown eyed ones).

Otto = Subaru and Subaru = Emilia. Otto is actually 3 different people

I accept that Otto is definitely shady and there's probably something weird going on, but if Otto turns out to be a traitor I'm going to cry :'(

Maybe b4 subaru got isekai'd, Pandora read "Otto Suwen will meet Natsuki Subaru" on her gospel, and decided to make it a fact, that'd explain his lack of hostility in the Envy route and why he still meets Subaru in other stories

Otto went there because he was getting paid. He knew that things were bad because people were already dead in that loop. He didn’t know to not go there in the final arc one cuz nobody died yet

About the eyes thing: I think that picture from the Tanpenshuu (the one in the thumbnail), specifically, isn't the best to take as a reference. Tappei has already said Otto has blue eyes. Maybe not in the light novel, but in a Q&A. Also, his eyes in the web novel are mentioned to be green anyway, but this was changed in the light novel.

MAYBE, 1. Otto was also isekai'd by Pandora instead by Satella 2. Like how Pandora is the witch of vainglory, Otto is the Sin Archbishop of Vainglory 3. Tappei is just messing with our heads which one do you think is most likely the case

Otto has a divine protection and we’ve seen his childhood so I doubt he was isekai’d. He must have been isekaid when he was a baby which would be mostly inconsequential to the story.

I want subaru vs flugal in the end game. I got the feeling that emilia was just a vessel for stella, same as subaru for flugal.

I think the "failing to kill someone" line was Al's, not Otto's. Otto's line was something like "You call this keeping your promise? If that's the case, I should've just died wrapped in a mat back in that cave! It all should've ended there, damnit!" IIRC the WN version of the line was darker, with him outright saying he should've offed himself.

theres a huuuuge "thing" that puts that theory to the grave.....in sloth if otto is nowhere. that said i believe that pandora has little to no knowledge about subaru and thats the main reason we havent met her yet. ps i believe that otto will play a huge role in the story as we go on with it but i dont think that it will have to do anything with any of the witches/arcbishops.

What if pandora created otto since his birth and she created otto to help surbur as much as possible because she has a plan that we still don't know after reading the 14th light novel spoilers Pandora wanted to get emilia to open up the seal door so when that plan failed she probably got her hands on one of those books that tells her the future so that surbura would come to the re zero world and that he is the key for pandora to get emilia to open the seal door since only two people can open it and I think satella is the scecand person that can open the seal so she created otto and let him grow up in a village and pandora is using him without otto knowing it that's my theory

Pandora can change destiny(?) at her will. Except something(s) like the GreatBlackSnake. Otto has a blessing that he can use to hear the language of the soul of the living things he is compatible with (animals and stuff); unlike meilie who has compaitable with bad animals.. And thus pandora can literally manipulate him with the living things he is surrounded with just like she did with Emilia with spirits to make her to come towards the seal . Thats why he is outside of the path of destiny which can be predicted by the book of wisdom. Perhaps his bad luck is because of pandora so that she can manipulate him easily.

The moment I became suspicios of Otto is, when he tried to restore the Book of Wisdome. Like, the reasoning for this action is extremely weak, and the fact that he did not inform Subaru about something that important, makes him even more shady.

I don't think he has a relationship with Pandora... could be, but I don't think so. However, Otto is indeed very freaking weird. And why doesn't he seem to appear in the book of Wisdom? Whatever reason that may be.

The fact that Otto saved his life in season 2 is weird for me becuase he literally threw Subaru out of his carriage to escape from the whale thingy in season one. Also I finished season 2 part 2 episode one of the anime and Otto had appeared in Ryuzu's room with a lot of fog (similar to the whale fog thing).

For one, different timeline, and the reasoning behind Otto throwing Subaru out of the wagon can be easily explained. For one, Subaru was blabbering about Rem, whom had just been erased from the world. To Otto, Subaru was sounding like a mad man, and it’s not good to have a mad man in your wagon when you are being chased by a large ass whale that can kill you. Secondly, Otto immediately threw him out when Subaru blurted out that he may be the reason why the White Whale is following them. Knowing this, the only way Otto could save himself was to throw Subaru out. Now, for the reasoning why Otto saved his life in season 2 was because Subaru saved his from Petelgeuse. It’s not surprising that Otto would try to befriend someone that saved his life. I mean, in real life, guys become friends over the simplest shit.

It would be interesting if Pandora used to be Natsuki Naoko's (Subaru's mom) childhood friend. Pandora could had saved Naoko as children from getting hit by truck-kun at the cost of her life paralleling what Otto did to save Subaru from Garfield. And perhaps Naoko named her child "Subaru" after her late friend.

I'm not really sure about this but what if Otto is related by blood with Pandora, like Pandora is Otto great grand mother orsomething like that but I'm not really sure but maybe. It could explain there similar hair and eye colour, and why he doesn't appear in the book of wisdom.

Otto is the Author's favorite, and i'm starting to like him too.

Grey eyes often reflect other colors around them and it seems like they change colour, but they don't. If the skies are clear blue, grey eyes will seem blue for example. :) So it's possible that Otto just has grey eyes and not blue.

About Otto's eyes. Remember the phone game you briefly mentioned? It has you get portraits of evey character you get including Otto, and can see their character model(?) as well. From that and clips of him from the anime and also the cover of the short stories featuring him and Garfield, it seems that his eyes are pretty clearly shown to be gray, though as you said I couldn't find it written in text, at least not in the 5 or so minutes of googling I did.

I think I'll go with gray at least until that's confirmed to be true, though I don't know how to react if it did get confirmed because of the evidence pointing to the contrary. Again I couldn’t find a source which is why I pointed out the eye colour inconsistencies from the art. I like to be transparent as possible in these videos and let the viewer come to their own conclusion.

When I first watched the anime and came to know of Satella, I asked myself, "Given that Satella looks like Emilia- Who's feelings of envy would look like Emilia if they took on an appearance?" If that were how Satella/Envy got their appearance, Rem would be the best answer. Of course, I don't believe this, but I think it is interesting to point out, if only for an idea as to how Emilia may not be so directly connected to the witch.

You know what there are some amazing abilities in re zero but most of them and almost all of them have appeared in other movies or series frequently but why can otto speak to animals is it like a normal ability everyone can posses or why is otto a random dude whos pretty weak the only one who can use this i mean its a big ability not a strong one though

its a rare ability that he was born with. he can speak to plants as well.

Rare blessing that he was born with. In fact, in many ways it’s a curse that drives people insane, but Otto was eventually able to overcome it and selectively tune out sounds.

I think subaru is kirito from sword at online cuz subaru has black hair and held a sword once in anime.

As the eyes dilate they seem to change colors. like blue can be different shade of blue ,or is some lights they look gray.

yea that one thing is weird: he isnt in the book of wisdom, how does he do that? it literally predicts the future and he isnt there, i guess you could say that its bc of subaru changig the future use RBD? idk

Dont forgett that Otto sacrificed Subaru in one of the loops. Pushing him of the cart to save himself. He wouldnt do that if he was some magicall know it all being.

@@Cat_Garfield We don't know, from the appearance of Mezeoria in Arc 7, Otto's head just becomes overloaded and he feels like his head will explode, so maybe thats what happened when the white whale appeared.

Otto restored the Tome of Wisdom, not to uncover any of Roswaal's plots to endanger the Emilia Camp in the present or future, but to uncover any plots Roswaal may have concocted in the past that might have a bearing on the present or future. In other words, his plan is to read what's already happened, not what's yet to happen.

I get why people would think that in fact I thought that at the beginning too but Otto already had his story that tells about his childhood. The way it was done too wouldn't add to the mystery your telling but just make his childhood story pointless and confusing! No it is an interesting theory but I think if there is something it's probably not that deep.

Otto will become the king, hes the true heir to the throne. Think about it we dont know much about ottos family only something about his brothers his parents almost have no story, expect that we see them a few times what if that part of the family was able to get away from the witches cult or whoever killed the family and founded a family in a random small town with no wealth. Maybe his Brother warned him not to use his divine protection because he was afraid that someone would find out. Think about it why would a random peasant boy be born with a divine blessing the only people we see have them are close associates with the royal family, members themself or nobility. Also Ottos name almost no one expect Otto has such a prestigious name and western name at that Otto was the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire after Charlamagne. Founding an ELECTORAL system the same one we see in Re zero where nobility/electors vote for the new Emperor. This is another why, why would a random merchant have a name Otto it must have some meaning. Emperor Otto also had a brother so thats another plus.

Not really that weird for his eye color to change if he has Witch Hazel eyes(changes with mood and colors worn) Otto doesnt have bad luck so much as having made a few business mistakes that made him only break even for his self proclaimed "bad luck" The the thing about D&D merchants is that theycan be more like retired Magiians, Mysticx,or Theives that can use magic making a "honest" living😏. Otto is in fact a magic user at the the very least Less scrupulous magical merchants might use charm magic to be seen more favorable,use illusion spells to make their goods higher quality looking or,um, trade a cow(2500 gold) for magic beans(700 gold)😏 Otto's main goal is obviously to secure exclusive rights to godos trade in the Margrave's Territory and then have his fingers in trade in all of Launica when Emilia accents to the throne.....he has already said as much For the Anime only its is still safe to say his Family are in fact famous Merchants worldwide as he has mentioned that though Subaru brushes it off until it is later confirmed
