OTC Hub Grappler - Wheel Bearing Tool - First Look - Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The OTC Hub Grappler and I are no strangers. I've been working with the one that my shop provides for a while now, but I thought I aughtta own one for my self for how much I use it and because of how the shop one gets treated.
Check out this really cool tool.
Also check out the South Main Auto video I mentioned in this video:

Do you still use this tool? Will new cars make this tool obsolete since they replace entire hub

Two different companies. OTC and Ken-Tool. I own and use both.

@@karpenterken1 What one do you prefer? I know Ken-Tool is some pretty heavy duty stuff.

@@707SonomaComa I bought my original Hub Shark in the mid 90's when it was made by Old Forge. That company made everything super duty and in the US. They went out of business and sold off manufacturing to Ken-Tool and Mayhew Tools. Still made in the US with a lifetime warranty, but discontinued due to Ken-Tool's manufacturing costs they told me. They refuse to make stuff overseas to lower the cost. OTC Hub Grappler made in China. Also has lifetime warranty. Metal parts aren't as strong as the Hub Shark and the Hub Shark works better on trapped rotor removal and spindles with the tapered outside to the bearing housing. The Hub Grappler's sleeves slide around on the tapered area causing the whole assembly to go off center easily during a bearing removal or installation. I didn't stop to recenter the tool and it damaged the forcing screw threads and some other parts on me. Just something to be aware of and not a huge deal as the parts still work. OTC sent me brand new parts as spares. The Hub Shark's reversible legs that attach to the tool's bridge allow it to span the bearing housing when there isn't a flat surface for the sleeves to be used against. They're both great companies for customer service. OTC has much better marketing and so many people aren't aware of Ken-Tool and Old Forge tools over the years. Overall I'm happy with both, but favor the Hub Shark a little more for the reasons I listed. Also, the Hub Shark comes with a thrust bearing for their forcing screw and a better tie rod puller for taking off the bearing race from the hub with its flatter bottom feet, unless you want to grind the round bottom feet on the OTC tie rod puller. Less flex in the design of the Hub Shark assembly makes the most rusted on difficult pulls easier, in my experience. Long answer, but I hope all of the info helps and if you want either tool to last a long time, frequently use a thick moly EP grease on the contact faces of the parts and the threads. Spray lubricants aren't good enough under extreme removal pressures of 5 to 10 tons that these tools generate.
