I was born and brought up in Govanhill. As a child I used to watch Third Lanark at Cathkin Park. My aunty lived in Boyd Street. I though you must have got it wrong but I checked the old maps from the 1890's and sure enough, there it is between Dixon Avenue and Allison Street with the halfway line roughly where Boyd Street is today. You learn something new every day. Thanks for sharing this.

Aye this was Third's ground while Queen's Park had to leave the first Hampden because of the new railway line from Crosshill to Mount Florida. Queen's Park built the second Hampden Park and were there around 20 years until they built the new third present Hampden Park in 1903. When they moved to the new Hampden, Third Lanark moved up to the old second Hampden and renamed it New Cathkin Park. Eventually it just became known as Cathkin Park.

All fascinating stuff. Wiki says the first Hampden Park was on the Queens Park Rec, close to Hampden Terrace. If they had to move because of the railway, I guess it must have been on the junction of Cathcart Road and Prospecthill Road? I'm really getting into to looking at the old maps of Govanhill from the 1850's onwards. There is so much interesting stuff there. Those coal pits at Bankhall Street and Aitkenhead Road that have disappeared without much of a trace although I do remember some open pits around Malls Mire/Aitkenhead Road area.
