Order of Operations: Introduction & Six Additional Problems

I describe the series of considerations one follows in adhering to the order of operations as I work through a number of examples. I then follow the order of operations with six more examples, which allows developing a clearer understanding of how to apply these rules. (I do 6 of the 12 problems on the sheet "Order of Operations #1 (Sheet Used in Video)." The complexity ranges from addition and multiplication to parentheses, nested parentheses, exponents, and radical signs.

As an ex teacher myself, and still helping students in my retirement, I can't say how amazing this web site is and how the very didactic and deeply understandable teaching style of Mr B has given me the confidence and courage to keep on teaching and helping struggling students; not to mention being lots of fun for me and a great mind exercise . Thank you so much

George Watterson Mr Watterson, I commend you on continuing to help people learn math. I am 58, and have determined to learn Algebra, or fail knowing I gave it my best effort. Somehow I just never caught on and stumbled my way through with a passing grade. I felt so useless with trying to help my kids. So the internet gives me many teaching style options. I have spent most of my time with MrB, and The Organic Chemistry guy. Between them I am making progress.

hello Mrb4math I am in 7th grade and I am a math wiz I am great at algebra and pi but I have a weird and serious issue with calculating fractions like 4\8 or bigger equations like 9\6x+4\8 X=-7 I'm confused

Generally, with the given equation, you have two options. One is to solve the equation dealing with the fractions, the other is to clear it of fractions, and then solve the equation. These tend to be tough to describe in text, given the limitations on formatting. For instance, I'm not sure if the "x" variable is in the denominator or not with what you have written, and my reply would be equally difficult for one to read. I cover both methods on my website, MrB4math.com, on the "Algebra" page. I've made it for my students; there is no required sign up or advertisements, and anyone who wants to understand more math.

Thank you Mr. B. Much appreciated sir! Question: Does exponents in PEDMAS mean exponents and roots, even if there is only one operation inside the radical sign? Will it make a difference? Along the lines of the fact that parenthesis means, parenthesis and other grouping symbols. Thank you sir!

It does mean exponents and roots. I'm not sure if it always makes a difference. You might try it both ways and see. Good luck.

The logo was simply assigned to me by KZread, based on the first letter of my KZread channel name; I did not select it. I should probably choose another one, but I have not to date.

At the level of multiplication and division you proceed left to right, doing whatever you get to first. The last step in this one is multiplication and don't forget about the negative. 4 is not the result. I hope this helps.
