Leno wasn't complaining that there was a short in the tail light. He was complaining that it was wired in such a way that if the tail light goes the entire electrical system shuts down.

That ancient way of using a light bulb as a fuse was how they wired a lot of bikes in WW2 and through the 50's. The taillight is used as a ground.

@@garyjaurique5028 Everything Jay said is true and I know that because I've ridden "several" choppers (and it doesn't matter who makes them). Hard tail frames (especially with huge rear tire and extended front end) ride like absolute crap. They ride so bad that I won't even use the word 'handling" when I talking about them. And the fact that Sr. said you can expect to have issues with any/all bikes shows he's never, not once ever ridden (let alone owned) any "metric" bikes. I used to make fun of "all" HDs in the 70-90s but after dyno tuning "many" HDs (starting in the mid 2000s) I can honestly say HDs are much better than they were through 60-80s... With all that said, to each their own and 👍to anyone that's happy with their Severely Over Priced chopper...

I worked as an engineer for Caterpillar and they built a bike for them. When they brought it to our plant we literally laughed at it. Welds, paint, wires out, the whole bike was just fashion or art. Not real engineering imo.

All companies who ordered a bike from them didn't give a damn about the bike, but they did care about the free exposure an publicity they got in an entire episode. A normal 15 second commercial already cost tens of thousants of dollars, so a 60k bike in exchange for an entire hour of free publicity was a steal to them. And as soon the tv series were over, no company ordered a bike from them and the tv no longer payed the teutels 50k per episode. And when the show was still running, the teutels started to live like rock stars and bought houses, cars and more expensive crap and even built that multi million dollar shop and thought that their succes would never end. Well how wrong they were!

From the reviews I've seen I'm guessing they really weren't meant to be driven. Expensive show pieces with minimum functionality. it just amazing how minimal they really were. Slightly better to the show chassis F1 sponsors put on display [exaggerating].

We sold Orange County Choppers at our motorcycle shop when they first started. They were a piece of crap that we were always repairing for customers. They did not honor their so called warranty.

I think you misspoke. I believe you mean assembled. Tanks and fenders were just modified 95% of the time. Frames were purchased most of the time. I think towards the end they started building some frames in house, but most of everything else was purchased as paul mentioned in this video

I was a huge American Chopper fan. I never owned an OCC, but I knew a few people that did. I rode 2 and they were definitely choppers. They were brutal to ride. They used the best components and they were all POS's that were constantly broken down. Electrical problems were reoccurring and bad welds were proof that they were OCC.

A few points here. Old mate trying to talk his way out of the electrical issue was pathetic. And the fact that he thinks that using all quality components will make up for poor design is scary and shows the real problem. As for the 35° angle thing....as soon as you change the height of the front or the back it will change the required angle. Once again, scary that he appears not to know this. As for the interviewer, he knows old mate is full of shit, but he is too weak to call it out. Instead he tries to make it sound like Jay has the sour grapes. I doubt Jay will give him another interview 😅

Yeah even if bike has best brakes it doesn’t mean it will brake well with weight being on bikes back wheel. Those OCC bikes are dangerous to ride on roads in my opinion.

I rode the Snap On OCC bike when it was on tour a long time ago. It's crap. Nothing works, it doesn't stop, it doesn't steer. It doesn't even look good when you get close to it. The paint was flaking, the seat looked like a middle school home economics project and all the fasteners looked like they were installed with a socket that was one size too big. The wheel alignment was so bad that it looked like it was crab walking from behind.

Hey did anyone hear how many times Sr. was on the Tonight Show? I didn’t catch it.

Senior says Leno should be “grateful for being given a bike.” He wasn’t GIVEN the bike. He BOUGHT an expensive piece of junk that was dangerous, just like all OCC bikes.

The only Harley currently in production that's 35 degrees is the breakout, and every review complains about the handling.

I respect you giving Paul a chance for defending OCC. But numbers don’t lie, OCC bikes simply don’t hold their value. That’s because they’re promotional bikes made for being looked at, not ridden. They boost the build values for the corporate buyers so the tax write off works well & that let’s them accept the bike will never retain any real world value.

I met Sr. at an airport lounge waiting for his plane to be fueled. He was going from NY-SFO for an event and they needed to stop for fuel. He was a lot shorter than I thought and very very limp handshake. Yelling at his staff like in the old show. Not impressed and he seemed very insecure. Too bad, as it was the height of his popularity of OCC. Went to his shop too and it was starting to fall apart. In this video he really has no answer.

The fact that Jay still has the bike doesn’t speak volumes. He has a lot of bikes. Hell, he has 12 warehouses full of cars and bikes! Jay tells it like it is. When the Tonight Show asked Jay to cut his staff he turned around and cut his salary in half so he could keep everyone working. He has my respect for that display of generosity.

I do understand that but also in Paul’s defense, that is the way he talks most of the time. I’m not picking sides here tho but jay does have a ton of credibility and what does he have to gain by not telling the truth? So I guess what I’m trying say is that I would probably tend to believe jay over Paul and it pains me to say that cause I really pulled for those guys to pull their heads outta their asses and build some good bikes instead of the drama filled fighting in every episode. You only have to look at the difference between Jay and Paul to see which of them you would side with. Jay gave his assessment of his bike and Paul skirted around the houses and went off on a wild tangent 😂

In a perfect universe, Paul Sr. would be a decent respectable businessman and he could partner with Jay Leno and Mike Wolfe (American Pickers) and they could help work out how to make the OCC bikes actually cool and rideable and not just a lawn ornament. The OCC crew - credit to them - are great artists. They are very skilled welders, painters, mechanics. That much is true. But the actual DESIGNING part, to take that pile of metal and form it into a rideable chopper that's enjoyable and fun, and not a rolling deathtrap, that is where they need help.

Cycle Drag guy? Might be the last Jay Leno interview you get.

I'm a factory certified motorcycle tech since 1972. I wouldn't ride an OCC bike the length of the average parking lot. OCC/Paul Sr went bankrupt for a reason.

I worked at a HD Dealer in the 70's applied for the mechanics position and was (I found out later) promoted to the parts department right off the bat. I guess I printed too neatly on the job application but I did have the joy of trying to teach one of the new hire mechanics on how to shim a Sportster transmission, but what can you do with someone that can't add & subtract. 😆

Leno is literally the most underhanded, media savvy showbiz hack on the planet, and I respect him for that. He hid in a cabinet to spy on a meeting between Letterman and TV executives. This is the guy who screwed over Carson, Letterman and Conan O'Brien and made 450 million dollars over a 50+ year media career. There is literally no way Leno didn't know his comments would have this reaction. The people getting emotional about this and taking it seriously probably believe pro wrestling is real.

It’s more about pointing out everything Leno said has been said countless times before by OCC customers.. the proof is in the reputation. In comparison West Coast Choppers were never in this position, why because their bikes were functioning works of art while OCC bikes were novelty items. To that matter compare reputations in their respective industries and senior is considered a laughing stock while Leno is highly regarded across many industries not just entertainment.

It should be pretty clear to anyone who watched that show for 5 minutes that he was being payed massive amounts of cash to build goofy, barely functional bikes, and I don't blame him for that. How stupid would you have to be to buy a OCC bike and not know what you were getting, lol? You think your going to ride the GEICO bike to Prudhoe Bay? Whatever, I just don't like the 5 minutes of hate and dogpile in the comments section. That I do get emotional about because I don't understand what you people get out of it. It seems like a hive mind effect where you all take some sort of satisfaction out of thinking and posting the exact same thing. How does this decades old argument between 2 geriatric multi-millionaires in mansions affect you? The fact that it was kicked off by the most underhanded, devious, media savvy shill on the planet (and I say that as a fan of Leno) makes it especially funny.

Being a motorcycle rider for over 50 years, when OCC first hit the TV screen I thought to myself...what a bunch of bullshit. I'd have friends who were not riders in the least saying "hey, did you watch OCC and the pool and spa company build last night?" My brain would lock up at what they thought being a motorcyclist truly meant. Jay Leno is not only a legend in vintage and modern cars but also a huge motorcycle collector. He owns 160 bikes! Jay is not only a collector but he knows all about and rides them as well and not just a guy who likes to stuff a huge warehouse with stuff. He is an elite level collector. Paul Sr is just a dude that liked to scream on a "reality" TV program that had NOTHING to do with actual bikers and the way they think. OCC was and always will be a 1 trick pony shitshow.

My Dad and his friends were really into riding in the 80s and 90s would travel across Canada on bikes and always stuff and events around bikes and they said the same thing, I didn’t understand really why, but I guess real riders see occ differently than everyone else

From what I saw on TV they were making bikes for show. They would ride them around downtown sturgis but anytime they cut to them taking an actual ride they would be riding Harley's lol. Paul Jr. designed some excellent bikes but he was doing it essentially for his own creative inhibitions. He didn't build bikes to ride. Much respect to JR though. Unlike his Dad he was smart enough to know when the show was over that it was time to downsize. His company is still doing well enough and he hasn't had to file bankruptcy multiple times.

They built bikes for people who don’t know anything about bikes, just to push them around at events

I worked at Sikorsky Helicopters in Stratford, CT at the time they built their bike for Sikorsky. It didn't even make it across the ramp without breaking down. They had to reshoot the scene of him riding it across the ramp like 4 times so they could finally get a shot him getting it to the viewing stand. The whole plant was out there to see it, and we were laughing the whole time because of how crap that bike was. I think the CEO knew then that he'd made a mistake in buying that bike for like $250k, and the bike ran like shit. They put it in a display box in the plants cafeteria and people would just look at it and laugh, then muse out loud, "And they wonder why we go on strike when they say that can't pay us but they can buy a piece of crap like this."

Funny thinking about how crappy those bikes are compared to how much they cost. I got a German 1954 Zündapp, owned it since 1994 and never had any serious problems with it other then a brake cable snapping, even after 8 years standing still the only thing I needed to do was put new fuel in the tank and clean the start plug, and then it started after 3rd try. OCC bikes are clearly crap meant to look good but not to drive or be functional. As one person said, it was cheap advertising for a company to order a build and get a whole episode dedicated to it.

I've had to repair OCC bikes and I stand by Jay Leno on the fact that they are just pretty junk. Barely ridable, they resist turning because the rear tire is too wide, (you can't use Harley geometry on a chopper, some need more rake and trail, some need less) and every single one I worked on needed to be completely rewired. Not as bad as Ironhorse motorcycles, but at least Ironhorse had fuses! So you use the best brand name parts, S&S, Baker, Accutronics (on some of your builds) and so on, it don't mean anything if your bike can't make a poker run without a tow truck.... Every chopper I ever built, is still on the road today, 20+ years later. I know all of the owners, they still call me on occasion and my shop has been closed for 6 years now. I didn't go out of business, I retired!

@@Carter-X YEP they generally are, so when I say they really screwed the pooch... you can believe it. Wiring. for me, was the easy part. They really did use the tail light as a fuse!

The bikes looks to be something to stand on display rather than be riding. Remember one they made, the tank must have been 1 gallon. Made me laugh when i saw it...

He didnt tell u why the fuckin electrical on the bike was connected all to the tail light... thats someone playing with wires that should not be anywhere near electrical

Exactly!!! When trying to defend how the bike was wired he deflected to the types of brakes and calipers. How does that have anything to do with how the bike was wired. Jay was spot on! Plus this is all used for clicks and I guess it's working. Lol!

Jay still has his chopper because he can't even give it away.

Paul was on the right track for a moment. Motor was great, best transmission and brakes. The next logical step further explains the problem. It is in the build.

The engines were crap in a lot of them Bikes and Beards has the Camo bike and did a video on it. The engine was utter crap in that bike. Don't even get me started on the open primary belt.

​@spartanx169x A lot of these builders were using Revjunk(Revtech) motor in the 2000s. Motors were junk. I had 3 friends that blew out the lower end on these motors. They were manufactured in Korea. There were a lot cheaper in price then the S&S. You get what you pay for.

Jay Leno is one righteous dude, man! OCC bikes are garage queens, made to look at and not ridden. They are just really expensive boat anchors!

I trust Jay Leno's opinion. He's an honest man with decades of mechanical experience. He also doesn’t have private interest to sell motorcycles.

Forget about geometry. He's having a hell of a time putting a complete sentence together.

I never heard Paul Sr. stutter so much in an interview as much as he did on this one. Jay Lino is the one I trust and it's about time someone stood up and spoke the truth about Orange County chumpers... PS and oh yeah Cycle Drag is two-faced!

I wouldn't believe a single word that comes out of Paul's mouth.

In the OCC employees defense Senior was probably yelling at Pauly and making them nervous while they were wiring the electrical system.

I'm disappointed that you seemed to set up Leno knowing Sr was waiting in the wings to respond. Jay Leno is the only class act in this.

At least we know Jack will never hear from or speak to Jay ever again.

Just using the best components doesn't necessarily make it the best bike. I've seen many times where people use high-end components but don't do their homework. Jay Leno is 100% correct. Best parts in the world don't mean squat if you don't use them properly

O.C.C. was a gimmick company with a business plan mainly geared to sell merchandising through a partially scripted, far from “reality” TV show. We saw plenty of their bikes for sale / on display at Daytona and I concur with Jay. It’s also hilarious that almost none of the top Custom Bike Builders (Ness, Nazi, J.J., Matt H., Yaffe, Trotta, Bourget, etc.) spawned from that era had anything different to say about the “Cake Decorators” from OCC. Fortunately the NY court records he left behind are public and I’ve read some of them. Bottom line, based on some of the shady business moves made to protect / transfer assets from his other companies with the Bankruptcies, I wouldn’t trust Toothole Sr. at his word for much of anything.

It was for MONEY LAUNDERING and helping peopel with TAX EVASION. The bikes themselves were of little value except as write-offs and corporate grift, along with a few boomers who got taken for a rough hardtail ride with no front brakes.

Jay has obviously ridden and driven lots of vehicles over the years,which makes him qualified to make judgement on a chopper that handles like a dog.

When you go from street bikes to choppers, they never ride the same. But to be fair, everyone who owns an OCC bike has never been happy with the reliability.

Im from Westchester county NY and I have a friend that bought a 0CC chopper it's a total pile of junk. He can't even sell it.

He responded really well to it

OCC's choppers were realistically nothing more than 'museum' pieces'.

This is the new Millennium of what we would call back in the day 'Sidewalk Bikie's' You know the type, they got the boots & jeans, leather jacket and cut with all the patches, cap & chain drive wallet, mab'be a 'Don't Fuck With Me' bracelet walking up and down Main St during BikeWeek dreaming of getting a Harley some day (or the basketcase in the basement never gets that 1 important part to put it back together) Then Harley started in house financing the bikes... it's been crap ever since.

Most museums of any type have very little display area. If you donated an OCC chopper to a museum it would just be auction off.

Jay isnt the first person to say this, just look at the bikes, they are not built for handling. They are built for looks, strange looks.

It's not hard to find another video on YT saying their bikes are junk. Maybe he can rage about those on another day.

There's one thing for sure, you'll never get invited back to Leno's.

Jay's complaint about the tail light was that everything ran through the tail light, so if it blew the bike would shut down. Very common for tail lights blowing on any real chopper, so it probably did happen to jay

and all their stuff went to " paint" which actually meant the bodyshop wood fill it up with bondo to make it look ok then paint it.
