Robert (Bob) Metcalfe led invention, standardization, and commercialization of the Ethernet local-area networking system for personal computers (PCs).
Metcalfe was born on April 7, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1969 with bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and industrial management. At Harvard University in 1970, he earned his master's degree in applied mathematics. His 1973 Harvard PhD dissertation, Packet Communication, came out of research on ARPANET at MIT Project MAC and on ALOHAnet, at the University of Hawaii.
In 1972, Metcalfe joined the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). He worked in the Computer Science Laboratory led by Jerry Elkind, Bob Taylor, Butler Lampson, and Chuck Thacker, who were developing early PCs. Metcalfe, in collaboration with David Boggs, invented and developed the Ethernet local-area network (LAN) and its system of packet protocols, which have proliferated and evolved to become today's Internet plumbing.
In 1979, Metcalfe founded 3Com Corporation to promote "computer communication compatibility." 3Com initially developed PC LAN products based on emerging UNIX, TCP/IP, and Ethernet standards, went public in 1984, and grew into a billion-dollar networking company.
Metcalfe served as the "marriage broker" who convinced DEC, Intel, and Xerox (DIX) to work together to promote Ethernet as an open standard.

Had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Metcalf in Austin at the UT student presentations in 2018, always interesting to hear his viewpoint.
Awesome interview! I enjoyed every minute... very informative. Kudos!
Len asked really great questions. Thanks for this. Looking forward to part 2.
This interview is a treasure
Within the 1st couple minutes - my thought was - this guy is a Type-A competitive person. A couple minutes later he does confess this fact. Not surprising. We need more like Metcalfe who are willing to do the very difficult technical, mental work to create net-new, world-changing systems, products, cures, and so forth. Maybe the reward will be to make a good living, maybe make a million dollars or more, maybe become famous. All of those rewards should be applauded and encouraged. How else do we progress? I know many slothful and mentally unchallenged people. Shall we put our future in those hands? God, I hope not.
This is incredible
17:25 "i was rolling in it'' as a teenager i can't fathom how this was a thing back then.
thanks for sharing ComputerHistory
Incredible what a gentleman
Brilliant
Because in somebooks Robert name changes to Bob??
Is there a Part 2, like the Part 1 ending indicates, and if so, where?

I think that with all the focus now on apps re tech "innovators", it might be a great idaa for them to go to MIT/Engineering school and such, and start designing the backbone and the infrastructure again Surely we are not finished with that re 5G and such, and surely there is much more besides 5G worth creating, looking at this the same way Professor Metcalfe did when he started creating.......that would be to see what is not there yet, and create it
internet beef

Sounds like Harvard is overrated.

Why???
He shouldn’t feel bad about losing to Rich Schroeppel on that freshman quiz! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Schroeppel
