HLS in the World (Opening Ceremony): Conversation with Six Supreme Court Justices

Six members of the Supreme Court of the United States-all HLS alumni- opened Harvard Law School's bicentennial summit on Oct. 26. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. ’79; Associate Justices Anthony M. Kennedy ’61, Stephen G. Breyer ’64, Elena Kagan ’86 and Neil M. Gorsuch ’91; and Associate Justice (retired) David H. Souter ’66 shared memories, advice and more than a few priceless anecdotes. To commemorate Harvard Law School's 200th anniversary, the law school hosted an extraordinary gathering of global leaders on Oct. 26-27 for HLS in the World, a bicentennial summit designed to address important issues in legal education, the legal profession, law, and society.

    The difference is they’re in a professional setting and their cordialness is required as they’re on the SUPREME COURT. Meanwhile in public, no one should be required to respect certain bigoted opinions (emphasis on those that target marginalized communities).

    This brought so much joy and happiness. Seeing all these justices - all different ages, minds, and philosophies - sitting there together, laughing, being cordial, it made so happy. It's such a shame the American people, the Presidency, and Congress can't come together like this. Politics never used to be so decisive and it's such a shame. But I hope there'll be more moments like this in the future. Even if it's not a lot, just some here and there, for us to laugh together, to unite together, and just enjoy life.

    I love Justice Souter's words about the importance of the trial by jury. He's absolutely correct. Some trials have tested my faith in juries, but ultimately I have never lost my faith in them. The jury really is "we the people" and when they speak that is the end of it. It doesn't mean they are always correct, but that doesn't matter. Trial by a jury of one's peers is a sacred right that we all have and we should be honored when called to serve (despite how much of a pain it can be).

    @Anonymous Doe I will be slightly less glib -- historically, many republican appointees have joined the liberal bloc of the court, but both blocs are fairly ideological. It is also not true of a justice since Souter, and will probably remain that way. If this is what you mean then I agree

  • @flame0154

    @flame0154

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Anonymous Doe It has not held up. I did not say "vote with the liberal bloc occasionally" -- since members of both blocs frequently do and have crossed over -- I said "joined the liberal bloc". If you look up the frequency with which the justices vote with each other, you'll find both blocs cross over roughly equally as often, yet strictly no one is claiming the justices you mentioned are/were members of the liberal bloc (though it's less relevant, you're also wrong on the timeline: Souter joined the court after Kennedy and Scalia). And you lose all credibility with your embarrassingly facile final comment, complete with unnecessary caps. If you think conservatives don't apply a strong ideology to judicial interpretation then you're kidding yourself, and are unlikely to have read many opinions from liberal justices.
