Davinci Resolve is what I call "hardware hungry", but totally worth it. My PC struggles with it, but that was built for gaming not editing work. My iMac on the other hand runs it smooth and zero issues. I'm still on the old 27 iMac pro but it's doing a great job. I found DR was easier to deal with than all the others and YES...I tried a long list of them before ending up at DR.

I started with Pinnacle in the early 90's, then moved to Premiere Pro, and wondered why I had waited for so long ... but I wanted to buy the program (which you used to be able to do). I tried DR, and with what I had already learnt, I found it wasn't too hard to start with. I figured that I could do it all in one node, which got me going. Then learning the value of the node process got me experimenting more, and it started coming together. About 12 months in, a major bugbear for me was audio (I do travel videos where my voice was fighting road and A/C noise), and the Voice Enhancement tool was released in the Studio version, and I invested. The world has opened up. I'm only using a fraction of a fraction of what this program is capable of, but I know it's there if I need it. I am approaching 77. Love your videos.

I was so moved by this video, and the sentiment behind it. I jumped from other "easier" editors when I found out about Resolve, but it's the huge support from the community that have helped me stick with it. I'm so filled with gratitude. Thank you Alex for all the videos, and presets, and transitions, and fonts! You've made our lives easier. Thank you for your kindness and joy for editing. Sometimes I'm hating life and an editing video of yours just lifts me up.

I started out editing church services during the pandemic and tried a few simpler, free programs. Once I realized I really enjoyed editing, I started looking into better programs. I ran across Davinci Resolve and never looked back. Yes, the learning curve is a little steep. I have barely touched Fusion or Fairlight. But I am learning more every day and, most importantly to me, I am thoroughly enjoying video editing. I also really appreciate your channel. You have been one of my main go-to places for learning Resolve. Thank you.

Hi Alex 😊 I have been making YT videos for a little over 1 year and editing in DaVinci Resolve and as newbies I can confirm there is a steep learning curve. However, I would also like to say that DaVinci is built relatively logically, I have never touched an editing program before this, but first and foremost it is thanks to you and your YT colleagues who, without comparison, have taught me what I know and can do. So massive thanks to you and yours for helping to understand and learn all about DaVinci Resolve. All newbies can really get a lot of help because of people like you - thanks my friend 🙏😊

I’ve started learning DaVinci several months ago, and I had an inkling to try adobe premiere pro, and I felt so lost and it was just so hard to adjust to it, I couldn’t even finish editing a video… so I instantly went back to DaVinci and it just felt right, perfect workflow for me and everything is just there if I need it all in one app. Having to sync or learn to use multiple programs is baffling to me. I have to say, Yes, DaVinci is shaping me to be a better editor.

If you could see yourself enjoying things like: Climbing Mount Everest, just to base camp though - nothing too outlandish on your lunch break. 😋 Or you've often wished to join the Polar Bear club, and longed for a relaxing dip in the arctic waters.... Or imagined rolling cheese down Coopers Hill... Blindfolded, wearing high heels - then YES! It's right up your alley!! I did it, and I haven't looked back! Wonderful honest review... I waited and debated and postponed creating,... After months of debate I decided on CapCut and after two edits learned that something as simple as deleting or renaming a "space" could not be done! As a 46 year veteran of the music industry with broadcast credits and success as a songwriter I immediately opened up DaVinci (I had purchased the Speed Editor and upgraded to Studio months ago just staring at it) and dug in! Hats off to the great video's you and Casey produce. With a few basics down my "reality show youtube channel" is running! Putting out content almost daily and just adding skills as I go... Your Effects package is great (recently purchased) and I look forward to more which makes wearing every hat in content creation much easier! Thank you... I'd love to see you develop some comic and thought bubbles ASAP... unless you have and I'm missing something?

I've been doing drum covers for my you tube channel for a while. I started out with windows movie maker, then it was NCH videopad. I then stubbled on Davinci Resolve. I was expecting a lot of limitations because it was free. Way wrong about that. I think I have been using it for about a year or so now. Mostly between you and Patrick, I have learned so much.. Its kind of fun to look back and see the progression in editing I've been doing.

da vinchi is really good for me. I have no editing background. I am completely new to video editing. I have edited 3 short trailers. The best thing I like about it is that I don't have to switch into multiple softwares for editing, like for VFX, colour grading, audio related work you don't have to switch to another software.

  • @UmbertoUderzo

Before Resolve I tried a bunch of Windows video editors and I managed to hit all those softwares upper bound limits for one or other reason. Then I found Resolve, it was... Don't remember, maybe version 6 or 7 don't know and I felt it like an atomic central control room. And it was so strange, so difficult and so satisfying. I searched all the forum and internet recesses to grab some infos. And I started learning it and appreciate it's "strangeness". Now with version 18 we are in a whole different league. You see a super cool software capable of doing nearly everything and still feel the original "colour grading" heart beating in the background. In all those years I never felt the need to switch to anything else simply because I currently couldn't hit any upper bounds. Except of the hardware when I want to be too much fancy, but there are a lot of ways to achieve the result even if the hardware is not top notch. So... Still dreaming a lower hardware requirement but still loving it. My two cents.

My 2 cents before watching this video is that most video editors are quite counterintuitive. I started with Premiere Pro from back in the day before they had the subscription model. I stuck with that for an embarrassingly long amount of time. It was about as intuitive as you can expect an Adobe product to be and then some. I heard a number of people talking about Resolve and how it's free and there's a LOT of really cool stuff you can do with the free version, so I picked it up. There was no "apply the clutch and shift gears" to keep this in motion. I quickly learned I needed to "shift to neutral, pull the e-brake, turn off the car, clear my head and then try all the way from the start to learn how it's done." I found that tutorial videos like the ones on this channel have really helped me learn Resolve. There are a few mobile based solutions out there which may make things a little easier, but they generally don't seem to have the power as Resolve, in my opinion, though that may change with updates to apps, but with them behind paywalls, I'm not likely to look into them too much when I already have a solution that works best for me.

As a casual video editor, I don't want to invest too much money in software I use once every two months or so... The free alternatives (I used Windows Movie Maker some years ago, together with Open Shot) are limited and you get frustrated. Yes, Davinci Resolve is complex, but who cares? With people like you on KZread, you can start editing after 1 hour of learning, and gradually learn a thing at a time. And you don't need to use all the features. Start with Media -> Edit -> Deliver, the rest will come when needed.

I switched from Imovie+different apps to Davinci two years ago. It was a big step from a hobby-level software to professional standard but it's worth the effort of learning. (And learning is a very pleasant way of living so it is not so much effort.) I don't make any fancy stoff but now I feel comfortable making my small videos in DVR and have found a good workflow. As soon as I want och need to do something I haven't done before the tool and technics is there. At the minus-side: There are not so many totorials and instructions in my own language (Swedish) and that slows the learning a bit. Mostly learning by KZread but also LinkedIn learning and a few small online-courses in Swedish. If I had subscribed Premiere Pro instead there would have been many resources in my own language to learn from. And many colleagues to ask. (Seams that every one I know work in Premiere.)

I see a light towards the end of this tunnel of debt I have and I can see getting a new computer (I have a budget machine from a few years back which chugs along slowly and I can do some basic timeline cuts/edits as long as there aren't too many stacked timelines or crazy Fusion effects) and I would love to buy a copy of Resolve just for the performance improvements and potentially some of the crazier Studio only features.

After that I spent the 300€ for the studio license. I never regretted it. But I have to admit I upgraded my edit PC from Ryzen 7 to 9 and the GPU from Nvidia 3600 to 4700. And the RAM to 128GB And a watercooled heatsink. And a decent case. Not really necessary, but so much fun. It is still cheaper than the stupid Premiere subscription. So do I think, Davinci Risolve is good for beginners? Yes it is. Spend some KZread time for tutorials, but then your are able to use the industry standard.

I started video editing with capcut and very soon I realized it wasn’t powerful enough for editing long form videos. Then I started learning Davinci Resolve, it was difficult at the first week but after that I regretted I didn’t learn it sooner. It is so fast and I have so much control. If you only edit short form contents, Capcut would be a great place to start.

I've done audio editing forever. Yay, Reaper!!! Now learning video. To me, Resolve is way less complex than Final Cut. They can do the same thing, but it's as if Apple tried to hide stuff from new users and then said "We're going to make keystroke and mouse navigation brutal! Enjoy!" Like why can't I easily zoom by scrolling with my trackpad and then use other timeline features with scroll/modifying keys. It's like they tried to make it hard and won't budge from it.

My thought process was, if have to invest my time into learning video editing, then it is best to start with the software that will be most likely my go to editing tool. And when I learned that DR is actually free and probably the beat of them all, it was no contest anymore. An then I've found your channel Alex, and a few more 😀👌💪

I relearnt video editing with Resolve and found it pretty intuitive 90% of the time. I’d certainly say it was easier to learn than Avid (shudder) and Premiere. Haven’t tried Final Cut Pro in about a decade so not sure what the current version is like 🤔

Honestly coming from power director all those years ago I would say it is. You just need the media, edit, colour and deliver. Though they are pages they are really just like folders or tabs. Its not like learning blender. I would say its great to learn on and then its got as much as possible to expand in. Plus, there's loads of awesome people like yourself showing us 🧡

I just switch from FCPX to Davinci 2 weeks ago. I tried switching about 4 years ago but Davinci seemed so hard. However after learning about video editing with FCPX for about 5 years Davinci seemed so much easier! I think having all the different pages and those Nodes really tripped me up. Now I’m flying through Davinci better than I did with FCPX!!!

I agree, there is a steep learning curve. But you can start easy, just find the info on KZread, and start simple! Now busy for 4 weeks with the program, and yes it,s the best you can get, and resolve is for free!! Works better then Pinnacle!!! thats in dutch, and have more problems finding things then the englisch version of DR.

Very interesting video Alex.....I'm a former Filmora user (well I still have it and it's come on leaps and bounds) and created all my Las Vegas Vlogs in it was very intuitive for me as a beginner.....I started wedding Videography last year and purely because I need multicam I started using and learning resolve...but my wedding films don't need anything complex, I use simple cuts, J/L cuts, fades and dissolves and one centred text reveal for the couples names that's it, but I'm so used to using it now that I would like to use it for my next travel vlog series but I know that's where I want to be more creative and fancy as you call it....suppose the question is do you think that one is any less of an editor if they choose to use the more simple program where the effects are pre built, take Filmora there is no inspector as such the only control you have for transitions is the duration of it....I think its the inspector I'm most scared of and just not sure what half of the controls and terminology mean...be great if you could do a video on the insoector and pick a few example effects or transitions and do the from scratch explanation in lehmans terms what they mean or do.

Great balanced explanation Alex,, Some simple programmes are great for quick edits,, but when you want to expand and do more complicated editing then they nearly all fall down, Learning Da Vinci has to be of benefit for situations when you want to create more professional edited projects, No reason why people can't do both while they get up to speed

Ironically I found Resolve very easy to learn and work with. I don't get very fancy, but I do enjoy the interface and feel like I can do anything I want with it, however complicated I want. I've tried a few others and the interfaces just don't feel as good. The tabs layout makes sense to me, (most) things are where I expect them to be, it's fast to render, and it's free.

Resolve is good if you want to actually edit with intent on learning how to be better at it and understanding everything you make for a year is going to be bad. If all you wanna do is make clips and shorts, it's definitely too clunky for that. Basically if you've ever wanted to make a movie or trailer, it's a good place to start. If you've ever written a screenplay, it's definitely for you. If you just wanna churn out content to hit the algorithm, it's most certainly not going to be a fun ride. Then again it's free and I think everyone should at least try it out, I could be totally wrong.

Sorry, Alex, I'm a man of habit and this one is a personal bugbear of mine, so i'm going to have to say it: "Steep Learning Curve" is good! It's a curve on a graph measuring outcome over time; with a steep learning curve you make a lot of progress in a short amount of time. A "Shallow Learning Curve" on the other hand, is slower progress over a longer time (time being along the 'x' or horizontal line on the graph), which is the undesirable outcome. Everyone gets it wrong, therefore everyone pisses me off. Thanks for the content; rant over! 🙂

@@MrAlexTech Lol! Yes, I expect you to because unfortunately (from my perspective) everyone gets it wrong, so it will probably just be the acceptable norm. We were told about this when studying Learning Curves in Business Studies at university all those years ago. Ho Hum. :) Back on topic though, I dallied with a few free video editors for a number of years (just putting together footage from holidays) when I first started, Microsoft's Movie Maker was my first before they ruined it totally. Then I tried Shotcut, which wasn't bad for a freeware offering, but very simplistic. I then stumbled across DaVinci Resolve and loved the fact that it was so comprehensive. I bought the Studio version because I wanted all the magic tricks and though I just do a small number of personal videos, I have no regrets about paying for it, especially with the Licence it comes with. Had it been subscription based, I'd never have touched it.

The one featue I would love with Resolve is and "Easy mode". Easy mode would hide half or more of the features on each screen. Those missing features would be available if you look for it. I will admit it, I am a boomer. All of the buttons and menus. I have to hover over a bunch of icons to find the one I am looking for. Argh...

2:00 Was that a bit of sarcasm in the way you said "sometimes"? 😅Basic editing in Resolve is by far my biggest complaint about it coming from editing in DAWs and Vegas Pro. Even my DAW Reaper has video editing features that absolutely crush Resolve. It's frustrating that Edit page keeps getting put on the back burner and neglected at the expense of things like the Cut page (which IMO was completely unnecessary). So many basic features are only half way implemented, poorly implemented, or lacking entirely. I've made feature requests for several of them on the forum and after a couple years of using Resolve not a single one of my top issues has been addressed yet. I realize that basic editing isn't as sexy as all the fancy AI wizardry and iPad app, but it really impacts usability of the program when simple tasks that should be quick take hacky workarounds at best. Audio is yet another topic and for anything other than very simple tasks I just render audio out of Resolve and then finalize the edits and mixing in Reaper. Resolve is so close, I really hope BMD will make the basic functionality and overall usability a priority. Fingers crossed for v19!

Seems to me, the program is somewhere between complicated and disorganized? Also, there are very few people other than Alex that can explain it clearly. I watched a Casey Farris video yesterday for something that should have been simple. But, he started the tutorial with 12 nodes loaded into the fusion page ??? It could also be the issue that no creator wants to create a 3 minute video that hurts their "watch time". Consequently, they make a 12 minute video with 3 minutes of useful information!
