Options for Replacing CentOS (And What I'm Doing)

Ғылым және технология

Red Hat killed CentOS, bringing its end-of-life forward by 8 years, from 2029 to 2021. In this video I present the options you have to easily replace CentOS for free without changing your whole ecosystem.

    There's no supported method that I'm aware of. You might find someone who's managed to do it, but it would come with a large element of risk. There are migration scripts to AlmaLinux, Rocky, and Oracle, though. I moved a production server to AlmaLinux last week using the script with no issues. Took about 10 mins and worked like a charm. Always have a backup just in case.

    @@ProTechShow Thanks for the insight , I am a linux newbie (currently using fedora on my laptop, and I am fearful that IBM could kill it off too , even though I am not a CentOS user , I dont like what is happening ) I will probably try out installing Rocky Linux and compare it with Fedora (i know that it has older versions of the same software and whatnot , while Fedora is newer and more bleeding edge , but I wanna see how a "server" distro actually feels like)

  • @TheNaught1
    @TheNaught1 Жыл бұрын

    RH changed the dev subscription to allow a bit wider use cases than before, but for no-cost, non-beta enterprise production, you're still going to need a different distro. On the plus side, I can now learn the production version of RHEL, and use it to operate a production server of my own. RHEL dev subscription now allows 16 physical or virtual hosts for "individual production use": “Individual Production Use” means any use other than for Individual Development Use including, but not limited to, using the Software (a) in a production environment, (b) with live data and/or applications and/or (c) for backup instances. The Individual Developer Subscription includes entitlements to run any combination of the Red Hat Software included in the Individual Developer Subscription on up to sixteen (16) Physical Nodes or Virtual Nodes for Individual Development Use and/or Individual Production Use. “Physical Node” means a physical system which contains or executes all or a portion of Red Hat Software including, without limitation, a server, work station, laptop, blade or other physical system. “Virtual Node” means an instance of Red Hat Software executed, in whole or in part, on a virtual machine or in a container.

    I am leaning towards Alma. They seam to be developing fast and efficient, compared to rocky(For obvious reasons). And since Centos is dead by the end of the year (less than 6 months) Speed is needed! at least for centos 8 replacement(And the migration script, also weighs in on the selling point) Also, Alma seems to have gotten a lot attention form the likes of Cpanel and Plesk, and as hosting is mostly what I used Centos for, that weighs in a lot. For home lab, it will be a mix of Debian/Ubuntu and FreeBSD. I still have a lot to decide, but that is how I am leaning so far.

  • @ProTechShow

    @ProTechShow

    Seems pretty sensible to me. Worth mentioning that Rocky got its full release today, but Alma does have a bit of a lead. It will be interesting to see how quickly each gets the subsequent updates out.

  • @ProTechShow

    @ProTechShow

    2 жыл бұрын

    Alma was quicker to hit the ground running and got a head start (CloudLinux already having the infrastructure in place no doubt helped, but it was impressive nonetheless) but Rocky have now caught up with commercial support and secure boot. Anecdotally I would observe that more individuals seem to be choosing Rocky and more businesses seem to be choosing Alma, but that's just the ones I've seen. The interesting thing for me is how much stronger each is because of the other. If I propose AlmaLinux and get asked "What if CloudLinux pulls funding and it goes the way of CentOS?" the answer is "Easy. We run a script and it continues as Rocky." This works vice-versa as well. I think having both options is great because it means neither is a single point of failure, which makes both of them more robust choices. I hope they both do well. Technically speaking they're basically the same and the bigger differences are more between the additional services available from CtrlIQ and TuxCare.

    Officially they recommend CentOS 7. There are plenty of people using different distros, though. It's not the case that you need to be using CentOS for it to run, but it might cause you problems if you try to get support with something else. Weirdly, CentOS 7 is still supported until June 2024 despite 8 and anything later being killed; so if you need to walk the strictly supported path for Resolve then staying on CentOS 7 until they publish an update to supported distros is a good way forward.

    Why wouldn't you use oracle?

  • @ProTechShow

    @ProTechShow

    2 жыл бұрын

    It was one of the options I suggested. It's a solid option. If you run an Oracle workload it's probably the best option. Other than that, though; whilst it's a solid enough option it's difficult to find a reason to recommend it over the others. If you want the premium paid option from a large organisation, Red Hat gets the updates quicker and enjoys wider vendor support. If you want a free version then Rocky and AlmaLinux are community focused and more likely to remain free. If you're just trying to keep prices down by starting free with the option to get discounted support later then Rocky and AlmaLinux have options via CtrlIQ and TuxCare, and I suspect are likely to do you a better price. Unless you're buying other Oracle services, OL's value proposition seems to be "like RHEL but cheaper", but it's unlikely to be the cheapest and the others are trying to offer other benefits as well. That leaves Oracle in a strange position of being a solid alternative option in every scenario but rarely my first choice.

    Well, of course it’s “at their cloud service.” It’s their cloud service, after all. Why would they use another OS aside from their own? That’s hardly a reason to say “I’d use that OS because of that.” Especially since I’ve got customers that regret their use of Oracle Linux, from a cost perspective. They use OracleDB, and were forced to use Oracle Linux in order to be able to virtualize it, due to arbitrary licensing restrictions in place by Oracle at the time. Now, they are stuck between a rock and hard place. Oracle Linux is the absolute last OS I would recommend as a replacement for CentOS.

    There could be lots of reasons for that and I can't provide detailed assistance to individual people. The most likely potential causes that spring to mind would be a driver, GPU fault, or monitor issue; but that's not guaranteed. The easiest thing you could try is updating your graphics drivers. AMD in particular had a few issues with black screens last year that have been solved in recent driver updates. If you're still stuck you should seek help from someone you trust with access to your computer.
