That was a big WTF moment for me as a child. It's perhaps the worst and most blatant instance in the original series. A lot of those examples he showed were ones i'd never caught!

Season 4 felt so eventful. The first half of it introduced an entirely different railway, and we got to know each of the new characters in every episode. Then, the second half with the Fat Controller's engines didn't disappoint. You had Stepney visiting, the circus coming, Gordon bringing the Queen, the engines going to London, etc. The whole thing felt like a party. The fact it broadcast during the golden anniversary of the Railway Series can't have been a happy coincidence.

I really hate the fact Season 4&5 the only model seasons where Skarloy has his true persone .In season 6 he was okay but season 7 was start of his downfall from a old wise engine to a dumb child.

Yeah I saw Unlucky Tug's video on the model series decline of his character and it's really embarrassing. It's like seeing a dignified actor like Ian McKellen in a live action version of Cats...oh wait.

At least for Skarloey Season 7 was not as bad as the other seasons. Trust me, those were way worse than that.

Even though Season 3 my personal favorite Thomas Season, I believe Season 4 was Thomas' Magnum Opus.

I found very funny and very cool the part when you pointed your gun at the Thomas And The Magic Railroad logo and said, “ We are not there yet. Wait your f*ckin turn.” Thank you so much for the video before the TATMR review of one of my favourite Thomas movies and my favourite character, Thomas before and in the first movie inspires me to really love acting

Season 5 is my favorite but season 4 comes REALLY close

Luke holding Magic Railroad at gunpoint (“We are not there yet!”) was the funniest part.

I think this is the classic season I saw the most of as a kid, and I loved nearly all the episodes. Grandpuff in particular left a distinct impression on me, but I didn't lose sleep over it because unlike whoever created the "Henry died in the tunnel" conspiracy I actually watched the next episode which explains that Duke was saved. Alongside this, this season gave my some of my random favourite characters such as Stepney and Bob the class 40 (seriously, the James May joke had me rolling for several minutes).

It's so SAD that Series 4's main newbie Stepney just disappeared from the show entirely after the way he was treated in Series 12! It would've been nice to see him more often in CGI if Andrew Brenner brought him back but with AEG, he's gone and there aren't any hopes of him coming back. If I were the head writer of Mattel, than I would bring back Stepney with a few episodes of him coming to Sodor for a visit, as well as share more of an interaction with Duck like in the books, that way anyone not familiar with Series 1-7 would understand his character.

Season 4 is the last season that were shown in Shining Time Station! And that is 1 hour Shining Time Station Family Specials and Mr. Conductor’s Thomas Tales.

Season 4 was truly a beautiful season to watch. I especially like characters like Duke. He is firm and strict but has a good heart. We need more characters like Duke, especially with the god awful reboot.

The last time Railway Series Stories will be adapted, as well as RWS characters introduced 2015: *The smallies are introduced Fans: WTF?!!!! I don't hate Rusty to the Rescue, if anything, I prefer it over the book version with the idea of the narrow guage railway extending to Vicarstown, and it's also very heroic.

Yeah its mainly Percy and Dougkas talking with a flashback showcasing one off characters they couldn't afford before Stepney rolls in. If they couldn't adapt certain one off characters back in S2, they weren't going that route here

1994 was truly an amazing year in film! Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Leon the Professional, Dumb and Dumber, the Mask, the Nightwatch (Danish original with Coster Waldau), and finally, the beautiful Series 4 of Thomas the Tank Engine. Happy 30th Anniversary to all of them!🎊🎊👏👏👏

It is so hard to choose between season 3 and 4 because they’re both so brilliant. The production is absolutely gorgeous. The opening narration at the beginning of Fish 🐟 is the best narration it sounds like a soliloquy. It’s wonderful to meet the Narrow Gauge engines. Duke and Duncan are my favorites.

Yessss, finally!! Series 4 really is so pretty, one of my favourites for when I need to get to sleep. I'm excited for the complete paradigm shift that'll be series 5 though!!

I love how you go into detail about episodes in each season. I am being reminded on episodes i Watched over 2 decades ago.

Season 4 is very great season but not perfect.The set ,the adapation ,the music ,the story ,the characters and the writing were great or perfect. My ONLY problem was coniunity with 4 episodes (four little engine ,bully eyes ,Toads stands by and Thomas meets the queen ) Top 5 episodes : 5.Slepping Beauty 4.Special funnel 3.Granpuff 2.Fish 1.Gallont old engine Ranking and Rating : 1.Season 3 :10/10 2.Season 4 :9.5/10 3.Season 2 :9.5/10 4.Season 1 :9/10

The classic Thomas is like a carnival There’s something for everyone to enjoy There is action, there’s horror, there’s sadness The constant shifting of tone is the main reason why so many people love the classic thomas

I saw the episode Rusty To The Rescue before reading the story it retconned. And… I like the episode better than the story. I feel like if I read the story first, then saw the episode, I would like the story better.

While I wished this season’s second half was more focused on Chris Awdry stories as I feel like some of the stories in Series 4 fit more into either Series 1 or 3, this is no question the most beautiful and heartwarming season featuring the littlest engines with the biggest adventures, and a huge cast of fan favorite new characters weather it be the Skarloey Railway engines, but also the characters such as Stepney, George, etc.

By far the classic season I saw the most as a kid, and arguably my favourite to this day. So many great episodes and far too many great characters: Duke, Smudger, Peter Sam, Sir Handel, Stepney, Class 40, Scruffy, Duncan, Bulstrode; the list goes on. Episodes like Grandpuff and Toad Stands By always stuck with me, mainly for being a tad traumatising. This was also the season I got the most ERTL toys off, despite being exposed more to the take n play toys. Also the James May joke about Class 40 being “dismembered” has me wheezing XD

My favorite season of the show. Why because he introduction the NG Engines and the Sodor Episodes are the best out of the show.

Also in ‘Escape’, the narration’s changed, so instead of Douglas going to Barrow-in-Furness, he goes ‘to a far away part of the Isle, where only the diesels work.’

This is my first video by this lad and I'm instantly in love. I'm sold, this is some quality content bub.

One thing I forgot to point out, in the early narrations of Season 4, the ending to Trucks got re-narrated in the final release

Agreed that the engine roll call song is annoying, but at least we made it to the Hit era.

I think those Christopher Awdry stories are just fine.

As an American viewer, I owned the US DVD, Rusty to the Rescue which weirdly a bunch of the old dubbing tracks used in the early UK dubs.

The Toby song and The Island Song always made me shed tears

Season 4 is a really good season and I feel bad for it not being my favourite. The one thing that holds it back isn't its fault for the most part but the continuity issues seriously hold it back for me

I recently rewatched this series of Thomas the Tank Engine and I forgot how good this series is, it’s one of my favourites from the classic era because in a way it’s a unique series because they set half of the episodes on a different railway line with new characters as well as on the main line and like a lot of Thomas fans, the visuals are brilliant and the crew have done a really good job with it. This was another series I found it hard to choose my 5 favourite episodes and I think my opinions are going to be a bit controversial, but here are my top 5 episodes for this series and why (as well as honourable mentions): 1. Thomas and the Special Letter - This is my personal favourite from this series because of how well it was adapted from the RWS books and the events that happened in this episodes are brilliant like it got me glued. First, The Fat Controller makes an announcement about travelling to the big city after recently a letter from a little girl and then Thomas crashing through the wall which I think is one of the best crashes in the entire show and the climax of wondering if Thomas will be fixed on time for when the engines have to set off to the city and it made me happy as a viewer that Thomas got fixed on time for travelling to the city. I also found out that this episode was marked as the 100th episode of the show and I think the creators picked the right episode to place it as the 100th. This episode or Paint Pots and Queens would have been a better series finale than Mind That Bike. I don’t know why you didn’t mention this episode, I think it’s brilliant. 2. Toad Stands By - Oliver’s best episode!! Despite this episode been adapted from book to TV a year after Oliver Owns Up, I still think this is a really good episode because it’s Toad’s first speaking role in the show and we see Oliver stand up to the trucks after teasing him. The best part of this episode is obviously Oliver getting us back on Scruffy by pulling him apart. 3. Fish - Love this one because of the night visuals, music and crash, also another good flying kipper episode. 4. Special Funnel - Again, great visuals of the snow on the Narrow Gage railway and it’s one of the many great stories from the first half of the series. 5. Sleeping Beauty - I’m sorry if I upset people who love the show itself, but I preferred this episode over Granpuff because it’s got more good visuals and scenery and I found it hilarious that Duke is annoyed when he gets found because he felt he was rudely woken up and I love the reunion of him, Sir Handel and Peter Sam at the end aka Vulcan and Stuart. I don’t understand why Duke wasn’t used after You Can’t Win, he’s a great addition to the NG engines, it’s a shame he was only used for 4 episodes. Honourable mentions: Bulldog, You Can’t Win, Four Little Engines, Steam Roller, Gallot Old Engine, Rusty to the Rescue, Henry and the Elephant, Paint Pots and Queens and Special Attraction

I think it would have been clever to air the standard gauge episodes first and save the narrow gauge episodes for last - I'm not sure if that would cause any continuity issues (I'm not bothering to put much thought into this) but it would have been a neat way to save the best stuff for later. Maybe start the series with Thomas and the Special Letter (it's a stand-out episode that starts the series off wonderfully), proceed with most other standard gauge episodes, then get to the narrow gauge stuff ending with Rusty to the Rescue, which transitions *back* to the standard gauge stories (and finishes Stepney's arc), allowing us to end with Paint Pots and Queens (a stand-out episode that serves as a perfect ending, as it's so grandiose). I usually watch Thomas à la carte anyways, just picking and choosing episodes on KZread as the mood strikes, so episode order doesn't bug me much, but I'd like to think that this approach would make seeing Series 4 on DVD, where episode order is forced, a bit more enjoyable (I guess?)

I see your point. Although I believe special letter was put where it is because that would make it the 100th episode of the show.

So this was the era where I heard all those songs... oh the memories!

My favourite season of Thomas & Friends and Thomas & The Special Letter is my favourite episode of all time!

You missed one other example, Sir Handel and Rhenenas wearing each other's faces in the US/Jpn only name board segments

The continuity in Rusty to the rescue makes absolutely no sense at all. But I still like the episode.

Both have so much in common. Interestingly, the original exchange in 'Skarloey Remembers' is more of a one-sided conversation about what Skarloey's railway was like, before and at the time. "I should like to pull coaches again." "Have your coaches got names?" "... No. But one smells of fish and cheese."

Season 4 the last season to awdry written stories until season 20 and there are problems but for the most part i like it this season reach the 100 episode thomas & the special letter.

Here's to the man who created my childhood. Refers to the latter, but I got the former, too. As someone who grew up with the models, I got a George Carlin narrated Thomas video. TTTE got me all nostalgic last May and I can't shake it. It's more nostalgic than I ever thought anything could be for me.

T&F season 4 is my favorite season because the sets in season four feel so comfy.

The season that expanded it all. 👍🏾

Peter Sam and the refreshment lady is my favorite episode for this season. For me, special attraction is the worst episode of season 4, and it’s almost as bad as an episode to the point where I dont consider it canon. Here’s why: 1. They adapted two stories that are completely unrelated into one. Making it the most confusing episode of not only season 4, but the whole classic era. However, it’s not as confusing as later model episodes. 2. What was the point of Toby going to that parade for if they didn’t allow him in? In the book, there’s no room for him and his driver assumes it was just an excuse. But in the episode, they just say there’s no room for him. Toby’s on rails and parades are usually on roads so how is that possible? 3. Toby’s driver says that they’ve got to go home, but they go back to elsbridge station which is NOT his home. 4. When Percy goes to the harbor, STH can be seen in the background walking away from Toby and he doesn’t even seem to notice him upset. 5. The whole parade takes place when Toby worked on the mainland, and the book says Toby knew that STH would’ve organized the event better, that clearly didn’t happen 6. In the book, the freight cars break a coupling and roll onto bulstrode. But in the episode, Percy carelessly pushes them onto him. 7. Worst of all, the parade in the book was a dream. But in the episode, it’s real life. Completely disregarding what happened in the book.

Man, Season 4 is like close as one of the best seasons of Thomas & Friends. And that season came out at the time when I was born. Looking back, those are many great moments in Season 4 and even fantastic episodes like Granpuff, Fish, Steamroller, etc.

In my opinion it would have made more sense for Edward to tell the story of Duke since he is the oldest and wisest standard gauge engine. But I understand that Thomas had to do it instead because after all he is the main character of the show. 🚂

I had to be honest and those episodes while good, didn't stand out to me as much as the others but that's just how I felt. If you love them, that's great.

James's primary whistle is also still heard in season 4, but once again used on Thomas in some episodes.

It just felt too odd that they didn't just go the original route and do direct reference to The Bluebell Railway. Then again they never mentioned the Tallylyn Railway either, Britt was weirdly strict about that wasn't she. If you like the change that's totally fine mate, don't stop enjoying what you enjoy 👍🙂

I should've said this in the season 3 video, but the first stories from the books I want to adapt for my first season as head writer (if the show has a 40th anniversary special in 2024) are "Mountain Engine" and "Bad Look Out" combined into one episode, "Danger Points", "Devil's Back", "Little Old Twins", "Crosspatch" and "Bucking Bronco" combined into one episode, "Stick in the Mud", "Duck and Dukes", "Super Rescue", "Gordon Goes Foreign" with additional lines of diologue at the end to get a better explanation of how Gordon got to London, "The Missing Coach (in flashback form)" with the first scene in the third story of the fat controller speaking severely to the twins so no one could be confused, and "Mrs Kindley's Christmas" because I think "Thomas's Christmas Party" feels like a part 2 to a part 1 we never got.

I think the Roll Call song is just fine.

After episode 15 I think stepeny was brought by the bluebells railway. But he comes to visit or to stay for little bit.

Series 4 is amazing it has the best visuals of any season the narrow gauge episodes are really good with a few duds as for the standard gauge they are decent

This was also the last season to be narrated by George Carlin in the US.

As I recall,in Ep.426,Mind that Bike, that old man Tom Tipper gave one of his letters to looks like Michael Angelis

Funny how Paint Pots and Queens would have been a great closing Ep for 2 seasons at this point

My guess on the new whistles is that they are used on some of the engines that have no stories to themselves in season 4. Emily's seasons 9 to 12 whistle is used on Edward because he has no stories to himself. Duck's whistle is used on Gordon because he has no stories to himself other than sharing "Paint Pot and Queens" with Thomas. And James's whistle is different in season 4 because he no stories to himself. Henry had an alternative whistle in season 2 because he had no stories to himself in that season.

My top five Season 4 episodes. #5 Henry and the Elephant. #4 Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady. #3 Fish. #2 Sleeping Beauty. #1 Gallant Old Engine.

Series 4 is another part of Thomas that I remember strongly about. I remember watching notable episodes like Bulldog, Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady, Trucks, and Paints, pots and Queens on various vhs tapes. The idea of introducing the narrow gauge engines while also having some decent episodes on the returning characters (while having some continuity weirdness) was pretty awesome listening to this review. Most of them I can relate to their character growing up like Peter Sam and Rusty. The weirdness of some production goofs and the second half having kind of a “not-so-great” finish does kind of hold back from being near perfect as Series 3. However, I’d still put it as my Fourth favorite Thomas Series tied with Series 2.

During the nameboard sequences, Rheneas has Sir Handel's face, and Sir Handel has Rheneas' face. Weird goof huh?

The idea of a diesel saving a steam engine from scrap is a cool idea, but I think it would work better if Rusty is replaced with BoCo or Bear and Stepney is replaced with an entirely new character. This is actually an idea I have for an episode of the revival era.

Some have alternate whistles because they have no spotlight episodes in Season 4 at all.
