Rest in peace, Peter. After a year or two without _Thomas and Friends,_ I came back to find this era in full swing. Needless to say, it put me off the show until I found Tug's channel. The fact that it was animated by the same people who did _Sausage Party_ is pretty surprising.

I think I get the "Boss" joke. When Sodor engines talk to Sir Topham Hatt they call him "Sir", but since the logging locos are not Sodor engines they don't know what to call him. So they just call him "Boss" and Topham feels offended by this because he is not usually called "Boss".

Another interpretation I had for the "Boss" joke was that everyone had assumed Ferdinand wasnt capable of saying anything other than "that's right", so when he added a "boss" to the end, sir topham hat was shocked. In my opinion there is one character where the Sharon Miller era always does a good job. And that character is Gordon. He was the only locomotive or road vehicle that was never brain dead or out of character in an episode or a movie. And we all know that the season 6 episode "Thomas the Jet engine" destroyed the friendship between Thomas and Gordon, but luckily the Sharon Miller era repaired the friendship. It's the only era where Gordon and Thomas are friends all the time. And not to mention the era fixed Edward. After the Hit era/New series ruined his character, the Sharon Miller era fixed his (with the exception of 2 episodes).

I think the limitations of working with only models does well for creativity and storytelling. Once you've got endless possibilities with a sandbox like CGI, it's easy to take things too far or make things downright silly. The fact they could tell the original stories with some hand made bits of whatever just makes it great.
@randomnessetc5600

But there's so little you can do with hand made models, CGI or any animation for that matter can do lots more than you think, I mean I don't know how they would've pulled amazing projects like SLOTLT if they only used models.

Rest in Peace Peter, we’ll never forget you to be a Thomas the Tank Engine fan of ours
Oh man, I remember the first time I saw the Nitrogen era. It was painful... I rewatched two years ago, hoping MAYBE it'll be a better watch... I saw that episode where Thomas has this weird belief that he could control a giraffe and I realise "No, it's not gonna get better..." I think the worst episode was James In The Dark. The entire plot was ludicrous. Without that lamp, James has embarrassingly bad vision problems if he can't identify a train less than 10 feet away from him when they have their light on and they're talking to him. James may not be able to see them, but he also can't seem to recognise the voices of those he lives with... It's godawful, but that being said, if you have it on as background noise while you're doing something else (chores around the home, playing a video game, whatever), the experience isn't as bad as opposed to giving it you full attention.

The truth why the Nitrogen Era was written so abysmally in the first place has been under our noses the whole time people. According to Sam Barlow in a SIF interview, the reason the 3 strikes formula became so painstakingly apparent as the show went on following Seasons 8~12 is because it was the writers supposed "idea" of wanting a three act structured story. In all honesty... this actually makes sense now, it must've been pretty difficult to write stories with the amount of creative restrictions the series had at the time. The scripts being rushed as a result of the expectation of a new season every single year wasn't the sole reason for all the poor, formulaic writing after all... the writing crew were pretty much asked to write this way, including Sharon Miller. I can't believe i'm saying this... but i think we all owe her an apology, turns out she was just following orders this whole time. HIT themselves are the real reason why Nitrogen's writing was so bad. As it was the start of a new CGI era, they deliberately chose to add a new formulaic style to the writing in an attempt to freshen things up. I can see the good in what they were trying to do there but it was overall just a huge mistake that wasn't thought through well. Barlow also addressed the irritating "rhyming" issue, apparently the idea there was to try and preserve some of the literary heritage in the CGI series and give the storyteller a little more to do that just read stage directions. It was all meant with the best of intentions, but Barlow does indeed recognise how hated it became though, and for that he has my respect. However though, he continues by saying: *"Thomas is a notoriously hard show to write for."* which to that i say nonsense. Thomas & Friends isn't difficult to write for whatsoever, the foundation for the appeal of the franchise is clear as crystal, your not writing for anything super complex or academy award worthy here, your just writing simple stories about trains with faces doing semi-realistic train things on an island that coincides with events in real life and obeys actual realistic consequences, all you need is a good solid outline and knowledge of the established lore and true original versions of the characters. Simple as. Nothing left to say except this was literally the last video i watched on KZread for the night before going to sleep and waking up next morning to discover the channel got terminated... totally not awkward. 😅 R.I.P Peter. You were one of the good ones. 💔 #PositivityForPeter

I always saw the same camera angles was a nod to the model series. It adds to the fact HIT tried to make it clear to the audience that this was the same show but under a new medium. However, unlike how Arc changed things up a bit as the era continued, they did nothing to veer off the “same ol’, same ol,”
18:32 I agree with this entire chapter. I remember when I first heard they rebooted the show and replaced it as a 2-D show and my heart sank. To this day, I will never see Mattel the same way again for what they did to such a childhood favorite of mine. What they did left a hole in my heart that can never be filled. Not to mention, BWBA brought the show back on decline after 5 seasons of gradual improvement after the nitrogen era, and the AEG reboot killed the show. At this point I just can’t deal with Mattel anymore about this stuff. I agree completely with the unlucky tug about this, and this video said it all. (PS rest in peace Peter.)

I remember being like 7 or 8, I had a dream their mouths started moving out of nowhere and they started dancing, it actually scared me. Back in 2010 when I was the Clearwater Features Thomas kid, both me and my dad tried watching the CGI version together after hearing about the change. I was bored out of my mind and went back to watching the Clearwater Features version of the show. My dad finally remembered the change actually existing, let’s just say he was not impressed with the voices the characters were given and the writing in the Miller and BWBA era. Hero of the Rails and the 2015 RWS movie got some heavy praise from us. Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, my dad would invite his friends to see the Pixar movies with him because he was intrigued by the computer animation. And he was also interested in the CGI Thomas, but the hype was short lived. Looking back at it now myself, it was really interesting and it almost felt like a different show to me.

The reason why the show went full CGI was due to a small budget. Plus, CGI has it’s advantages the Models couldn’t pull off due to limitations with the live action animation. This was also when UK Tax Animation Breaks were happening in the late 2000s, so they had to transition to CGI this way as their intended Model-CGI Hybrid would make the models too costly.

@@woobgamer5210 I don't see how since the characters only move their eyes. At least with the CG they aren't just moving their eyes around plus they are way more expressive. I don't care about body movement. It makes sense as they're alive.
Glad to see you making a comeback one video at a time :)
We all still miss Peter
Peter would *undoubtedly* have been overjoyed by not just this video, but perhaps by how many people enjoyed what he inspired.
I do actually have some favorite Season 14 and Season 15 episodes. Those episodes are: 1. Victor Says Yes (Because we got to see Victor as an Engine who gets overwhelmed by too much work, and not overworked) 2. Merry Winter Wish (One of the best Christmas episodes in the Miller era) 3. O the Indignity (Because I feel like that should have been Scruff's debut, and the last episode felt very non-canon) 4. James to the Rescue (Because we got to revisit James' rivalry with Toby, just like in the Railway Series) 5. Surprise, Surprise (The other best Christmas episode in the Miller era) 6. Stop That Bus! (Because Sharon Miller's main character choice was very good. I still don't like the "Shake Shake Bridge", but I'm glad Sir Topham Hatt sees how dangerous it is.) 7. Stuck on You (Because we got to see Butch as the main character, and believe it or not, he actually is a character made by Britt Allcroft herself) Runners-Up: 1. James in the Dark (Because we did get to see Allicia Botti in concert again) 2. Charlie and Edward (Because of the backwards reference to Bertie's Chase) 3. Toby and the Whistling Woods (Because it feels like one of the only Miller era episodes to be Halloween themed) 4. Henry's Health and Safety (Because I think it's better to see Henry as overcautious, instead of him worrying all the time) 5. Big Belle (Because we revisited Arlesdale End) (Also, the Miller era is NOT the worst. The AEG era was the worst.)

Yeah, season 16 was best of those four.
Season 15... my least favourite CGI season. Also R.I.P Peter :(
Not gonna this era wasn’t too bad but definitely mid. And compare this to BWBA and All Engines go this looks like a good era.

It's definitely lackluster, but still okay when compared to the seasons afterwards
We need to put up a well put togethered report about multiple people wanting to self-terminate because of season 25. Also I mostly grew up on the HIT and Nitrogen era up until I turned 13 and watched the Brenner and classic era much more.

I totally agree with you. The Nitrogen Era has such shitty writing. Because of this, I refuse to acknowledge this era and most of the episodes from the era are 100% fictional in universe and not apart of the continuity. Some stuff is canon or did happen but most of them aren't. I prefer the Brennersaince myself.

Idk how these episodes were accepted by the writing staff. I mean, who's even in charge of producing these episodes. It's like they've never had experience in writing decent storylines in contrast to the model era. Also I find it ironic that fans could create better content than a whole studio. Then again, they're not confined to corporate mandates

10:01 I *think* with the "boss gag" whoever that is was supposed to call him "sir." I mean, he is literally a sir anyway, but even if he was not, "boss" sounds to casual or American maybe to some more uptight British people. If you're American yourself I can see how the joke makes bugger all sense to you. Source: am British and have had/seen some teachers and scout leaders etc get pissy for not being called the exact right term of respect, even it was still a widely accepted term of respect they were called.
Interesting fact The Logging Locos don't really appear in BWBA or AEG but they do in the Brenner-Era and the Nitrogen-Era
Don't @ me on this, but I'd rather have Magic Railroad (Director's cut with P.T. Boomer) mentioned a lot in the series more than Misty Island. R.I.P. Peter

The Nitrogen era may have been lazy but it never threw out what Thomas was about.

This era was promising but I was a big letdown

R.I.P. PETER, REST IN POWER
I wouldn't say that it's the worst Era but it's definitely bad
Brenner era was the first era to give Edward Henry Gordon James and Emily a lamp
Tbh after watching this I tried binge watching the entire nitrogen era but only managed to hold on as far as the first half of season 13
10:02 I think this is a reference to when Thomas first came to the island in "The Adventure Begins" when Edward corrected Thomas to call the fat controller "Sir" and call him "Sir" only. Everyone only calls him "Sir", and he prefers being called that way. So when they called him "Boss", that is why Sir Topham was very offended XD.
Seriously I swear in this point of the series, the narrator sounds like he’s losing the will. But this series will be better than all engines go because at least this series stuck to the charm of the show. They probably wrote it for babies because babies like consistency so they constantly wrote the stories the same way for babies to understand. But the writers didn’t understand that Thomas wasn’t a baby show. It was something for everyone to love. I’m a beginner fan because I didn’t grow up watching Thomas. But it grew on me and now I understand , respect and love the show. If only the writers understood this too.

It sucks that Thomas was reduced to being a dumb kids show, it honestly hurts to see
I grew up with this era when i was bron in 2009 and i loved and it wasnt because of the lazy writing because this era made me like thomas because he still haved his core appeal which is the realistic world

Same… people think that writing is everything when the Nitrogen era stuck as hard as they could to the model series models.

15:30 I can't stand this narrator. He sounds like he's talking down to you so badly.
16:57 I'd argue that Don't Bother Victor is a two-strikes-and-you're-out episode. The reason being is because in every other episode of this era, the protagonist makes the same mistake three times before realizing they've screwed up. In Don't Bother Victor, however, Peter Sam only makes the same mistake twice. He's told that Duncan's rods are rattling and races off to find him, but runs out of coal before he can get to him. If this were a standard three-strikes episode, we would've actually seen Peter Sam get to Duncan, screw up with him, and then realize he was wrong the whole time. But that doesn't happen, therefore, I rest my case.
I swear all these episodes could’ve been easily cut down to 4 and a half minutes
