Nobody even remotely sounded like Eddie Vedder until he came along. Then all of a sudden everybody tried to emulate him. But noone ever came close. He sounds different today, having developed the third installment of his voice after 30 years (second was around the year 2000). And like the first two installments it sends a shiver down your spine.

Yeah nailed it. I’d even argue that his early baritone that is often mocked wasn’t as prevalent as it seems. Especially on VS and Vitalogy, he screams a lot in his delivery. A very underrated scream as well. If I had to guess, i think he blew out his voice while touring those first few albums, which caused the shift you first hear on no code.

All you need to do to better understand Eddie’s singing voice, is listen to his speaking voice. He has a very deep baritone voice. This was recorded very early in Pearl Jam’s career, and his voice has only gotten deeper. He ages like fine wine. Not better or worse though, just different. He also smokes, which, of course, adds to the gravelly quality, and has affected his ability to reach some of those high notes now. But he’s still going strong, thirty years later. I just love him.

For someone like me who had a baritone clean voice struggling through the 80's with so many guys singing in tenor range bordering on mezzo alto it was like the clouds parted when Pearl Jam came out. A man on the top of the charts singing in his natural range and emoting openly with a vocal style that bordered between raging and weeping. It was liberating and beautiful. An entire generation of vocalists were suddenly allowed to sing in their own voice. Thank you Pearl Jam.

I don't know if you will read this comment, but this is how he made that rasp. He lightly compresses above the vocal folds (glottal compression). It's the bridging technique between clean and harsh vocals. Taking this technique further is how to do fry screams and a few other harsh techniques. I've been singing for my entire life. This was how I was taught to do it. I learned the language later.

This one, Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky (Abbey Road Sessions, in particular), St Paul and the Broken Bones - both Grass is Greener (OurVinyl Sessions) and Broken Bones and Pocket Change (Bluegrass Underground), and Matt Corby - Brother (live on Triple J)…all of these performances encapsulate every aspect of “all in” in the utmost fashion. I’ve realized that all of the biggest four ‘90s Seattle grunge singers had some type of distortion going on with their voice. That would be Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, and Eddie Vedder right here. It never struck me as them trying to imitate each other, but more like a natural part of all their own voices and vocal styles. Plus, it was at the outset of the grunge/alt rock explosion at the beginning of that decade that lower voices came back into favor. So singers like Eddie were able to achieve the recognition they deserved.

Damn, I love this performance. 🖤 I don’t think you’ve reacted to Lorna Shore yet. Not sure if you’ve heard of them, but their vocalist Will Ramos is UNREAL. Recently, he met with Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice to get scoped while doing harsh vocals for science-and it’s fascinating! It was fun to see experts in the field of vocals geeking out over his epiglottis. 😂

If you are looking for a similar voice. Darius Tucker from Hootie and the Blowfish, is the only one that comes to mind, who is sounding kinda the same way :) Nice reaction, love it.

Check this out. I can sing, but not like Eddy. But it is allergy season now and I am affected.i was watching this video, and you were wondering how he kept up his gravely voice, and I tried singing some of this song . And lo and behold, I nailed the sound. So your answer to my theory is that ed sprayed his throat with allergic pollen just before he sang, lol

Maggie you need to listen to hunger strike, by temple of the dog. It's members of pearl jam and Soundgarden together. And two great friends Eddie vedder and Chris Cornell singing together. They absolutely bounce of each other in total perfection. Rest in peace Chris and god look after Eddie...🙏

Since you're done a video on the phantom of the opera, i think it would be neat if you did a video on David Gilmour Echoes in Gdansk. Its a pink floyd song, but the Gdansk recording is the best version. See if you notice the similarities between echoes and phantom. 2 very different sounding songs, but very similar at a certain point
