Open Moments: The Final Round | Jack Nicklaus | 134th Open Championship

Спорт

It was an emotional day for the crowds at The Open at St Andrews in 2005 as golfing legend Jack Nicklaus teed off for the final time at The Open Championship.
The 18-time major winner had been victorious at three Open Championships, in 1966, 1970 and 1978. At 65 years old the American known affectionately as ‘The Golden Bear’ was making his 38th Open appearance.
He played alongside Luke Donald and Tom Watson in the opening rounds, with the spectators watching to see as much of Nicklaus as they could before he bid farewell to major tournaments.
Here is Jack Nicklaus’ final final round at The Open.

Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, together on the 18th at St Andrews. To finish with a birdie too, it doesn't get better than that. Thank you Jack, for EVERYTHING you have done for the game of golf.

The Greatest Sportsman of All Time, both on and off the field of play. Jack led by example and it will never be equalled. The mould was made and was broken with this Great Man.

I had the honour of sitting in the stand at the side of the 1st fairway to witness the bears last birdie. What a day. Tiger had just finished on the 18th when Jack walked on to the 1st tee - the place erupted - and Tiger, to give him his due, just smiled and left the green - he knew he was in the presence of greatness. Watched that putt he had on 18 being missed all day, when he hit it I thought it was going past like everyone else, of course it wasn’t , like Seve in 84, which I also saw, willpower will always win out. We can argue who the best ever golfer is, the only thing you can say for sure is who is the best at any one time, and Jack was certainly that from the mid 60’s to the early 80’s - no debate.

I doubt Jack has the time or interest to read any of these comments, however, just in case. Jack, you are held in the highest regard of sportsmen and more particularly as a PGA golfer .

Boy, that putt at #11 really swung WILDLY, didn't it? Sometimes the Old Course surprises even the living legends. Pretty amazing though, at 65 he was still capable of a mostly full swing and it was getting him on the green in regulation an awful lot. Also nice that he shared the moment with Tom Watson, who of course wasn't done shining at the Open Championship quite yet!

I wonder if anyone ever calculated how many miles Jack walked on golf courses over the years? To the Moon and back probably…
