I grew up in the era of Tiger Woods - but watching Jack's videos and hearing him talk about the game, competing, sportsmanship - man this guy is the real deal. In my book, he is absolutely the best - not just in records - but in sportsmanship and as an all around competitor.

Of all time. Into the wind, US open pressure, 1 iron. It was ridiculous. 14 years later on 16 at Augusta nearly hills it as well. Under pressure, thete was no one like the golden bear. Not even as great as tiger has been, under pressure, I'll take jack forever

Tiger 16th Augusta 2005, Tiger Glen abbey 18th in 2000, tiger 3 iron from the bunker in the 2002 pga, just to name a few that are better.

Jack will "always" be no 1 in my book.

He's one helluva champion that's to be sure, but for my money, ( and yes, it's significant, because I'm a loaded trust fun baby, and never worked a day in my life), as I was typing, for my money, Carl Spackler, is the greatest EVER!

I love when Jack relives important rounds like this. You can see he is taken right back there and into the moment. He can explain how he played those holes perfectly whether he has video to look at or not.

So special. I played there in April, 1982; about 6 weeks before Watson went birdie birdie to beat Jack at Pebble Beach. He was always so gracious in defeat. He would say it was because he had so much experience at finishing 2nd or 3rd, but imagine that. But for 1 or 2 shots over 4 days, by him or the winner, he might well have won 30 majors. When 65- 66 wasn’t enough to beat Watson at Turnberry he had a dinner date scheduled with a writer, who told him he understood if Jack wanted to cancel. Jacks reply was, “Don’t you want to eat?”

Interesting interpretations of GOAT referred to in these comments. Jack beat what was in the field in his era more times in Majors than anyone in history, before or since. If he had been born in the modern era, he would have had modern training, modern technique, modern equipment blah blah, and the same laser mind set. Clearly impossible for anyone to say how he would then compare to the modern golfers, but it seems silly to suggest that he would not have been at or close to the pinnacle. Almost everyone accepts the Majors as the absolute test of greatness in golf across the ages. There is only one existing goat; and he is the man in this video. And a gentleman and role model for good measure.

Yes, but if Jack had been born in the modern times, he would have also faced a 10x - 100x deeper fields of moderns players that all had the same access to modern training/equip/etc. It was still a sport for the white elite back then and most of them Americans in that era with a few outliers. Not to say he was not a huge talent and had the mindset of a winner, but the competition is harder today.

@@barath4545 Fair point. However every new generation since the dawn of competition has said this (it's harder now). Ok, the GOAT discussion is in fact impossible. So, if everyone is going to engage in it, we really need to accept a benchmark. Majors are the benchmark. Mr Nicklaus won the most, and came second in the most, against a very big and talented, if not so culturally diverse, world field. Happy to accept an alternative comparison of greatness if it is better.

The PGA's caucasian only policy was dropped in 1961. Jack won his first major in 1962. So Jack won his early majors in an era when the sport had not truly opened up. The first African American played in the Masters in 1975. Jack won his first four Masters before 1975. So he essentially won many of his early majors in a less open and thus less genuinely competitive era. It is not Jack's fault. But just as we recognize we can't compare Jack and Tiger to Bobby Jones, we can't compare Jack to Tiger. Jack's 18 are made from a different metal and not a true target.

@@wsc2533 Unsurprisingly, I could not agree with the last sentence! Because of it, I will leave one last thought to chew on... No matter how big the world pool of sporting talent, eventually a very small elite rises to the top of the discipline. When it comes to competing for the honours that will define the greatest, the best are often only trying to fight off the 10 - 15 other world's best, who are a class above. And within that elite, there are usually 3 or 4 who are another step above, and these hoover up most of the titles. So, in tennis Borg/McEnroe/Connors in one era, Lendl/Edberg/Sampras in another, Federer/Nadal/Djokovich in the 21st century. No matter how big the world pool becomes, eventually the tiny elite fight for the major honours - with the occasional exceptional performances by other excellent professionals. Similarly in golf. The latest generation is usually better physically and technically, for reasons previously covered, but the relative difficulty of winning more Majors against the other elite of your generation has changed very little. Jack won titles for the same reasons as Tiger; a talent worked hard at to perfect, an iron will, a great golfing brain, an ability to conjure up the best of their talent under the most intense pressure, a refusal to give up. Both were usually battling a handful of other players good enough to push them under pressure. The strength and depth of the rest of the world pool was and is a lesser contributory factor to the difficulty of the task of winning golf Majors in different generations.

You're kidding, right ? Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, ect...Jack faced a way deeper field of consistent major winners than today's group

One may talk about Tiger. Wind back to the club technology of Jack's time compared.... No matter how you feel. This generation turned it on with primative equipment and not as lush of conditions 🙏🙌❤️

It sounds like Chris Schenkel of ABC Sports.

Lots of realistic tiger supporters admit Jack is the GOAT. Tiger was the best of his era and if he was coming up today he would be the best of this era. But Jack played legends who made him earn every win. Tiger beat stiffs who nobody remembers their name. Except Phil who fought him like Jacks competitors fought him.

@@annefilippobertozzi7601 V Jay and Els were past their prime along with Couples. The guys his age like Sergio and Howell never really got really good. Jack had to dethrone Arnie and face him and Player and Casper and Trevino and Watson and Miller and Seve. All legends. Tiger got started with a weak field. He was longer than everybody except Daly. Guys like Norman and Faldo and Floyd were retired. His competition got better later with DJ Phil Koepka taking over. By then Tiger lost his game in 2008. No majors until his last one at Augusta in 2019.

@@annefilippobertozzi7601 so did Ben Hogan. Tiger never missed a major until his car crash years later when his game was already gone. He was always tweaking his swing and he actually did some Navy Seals training along with steroids and stem cells which turned him into a linebacker. From skinny Tiger to Hulk Hogan. Jack stayed with one swing and it lasted until he got old. Tiger thought he was able to have the strength of a weight lifter and the flexibility of a golfer. His back problems were his fault even before his car accident.

This is the one time that Jack was able to defeat Lee head to head in a major. If he had lost to him again, he would have been 0-5 in majors against the Merry Mex.

Ironically, there 5 times as many AAs players on tour during Jack's heyday in the 1970s than there ever were during Tiger Woods ri=un in the 2000s.
