Nicklaus vs Watson | Priceless Open Moments

Спорт

On Saturday July 9, 1977, Tom Watson turned to Jack Nicklaus and asked a simple question.
“This is what it’s all about isn’t it?”
“You bet it is,” the Golden Bear responded.
Even in the heat of the moment, amidst the blaze of battle, under the scorching sun, two of the game’s greats took a second to appreciate something extraordinary: The 106th Open, Turnberry 1977 the “Duel in the Sun.”

Without a doubt the greatest duel in modern golf history. Watson shot 65-65 on the weekend, Jack shot 65-66. They finished at -12 & -11 and no other golfers were under par. Only one other golfer was under par on the weekend, Arnold Palmer. Heading into the weekend the two were T2 and 11 other golfers were within 2 strokes.

Absolutely the greatest Open I ever saw. And Nicklaus - after that birdie at 18, raising his arms for the crowd to be quiet for Watson’s putt. Total class from both of them. Another story - when Watson lost that heartbreaker to Cink at Turnberry in 2009, the first call to commiserate was from Barbara and Jack.

Jack's shot from the bushes and putt as well as Tom's shot to the green rank amongst the best shots ever played on the final hole of any major.

At that time Jack held the Masters record at 271, the US Open record at 275, and here for 30 seconds he held the Open record at 269.

As a 15 year old in Kansas City I went to mass Saturday evening so I could stay home and watch the final round Sunday morning. I was in awe!

I watch a bit of golf back then, and in my opinion there were two player who did not fear Jack,Watson and Trevino. There where many majors where going into the last day, as his records shows,if within striking distance other player fell off,1986.He stated other players lost more majors than he won.In 86 Norman and Price were the last group and where on the 15th or 16 when the heard the roar, one them of the later said they knew exactly what it was,Jack was on a charge, both had the championship in their hands until then.

So true, you see Watson go head to head with the GOAT there, & he did it another 3 times. In Tigers day no one had the guts to take him in head to head

@@nathanherzka9355 Although you can only beat the guys who are out there, Jack had to play Palmer, Player, Watson, Trevino, and Floyd. He won 18 majors and finished 2nd 19 times. Tiger played Phil and Vijay and......??

You're so right. When they showed a close-up of Tom's face before Cink won I could of cried. Tom looked in agony with pain. I only watched the video again the other day. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lJqMqdCle9C6drQ.html it was at the 10:16 mark of that video..

It’s great to see this great match. But do we need to have music playing all the time in the background. It doesn’t make it better.

Remember, they made this in late 77 or early 78. Kind of the thing to do back then 🤣🤣
