@Johnny Murillo it sounds to me like you made a single type of product that did not frequently change. Not only are they designing multiple products, it then needs to go to engineering, then needs to be approved, and then they need to implement it into existing equipment. Obviously my example is not near as complicated as it actually is. Even manufacturing equipment which you would hope to write off as a fixed cost might not be because again, they are changing the design. Using an extremely brash simplification of a process that is actually very complicated so you sound right is extremely misleading. Depending on a number of factors, each phone will have completely different fixed and variable costs that will be spent on them. Not only do they have to account for this, now you have to work with the marketing dept to ensure that your product is getting publicity it needs while also including that in the price. You're right, a pool of water and a hose doesn't cost much, but now you need to make sure that you have a process of how you will consistently test it, which costs money. Then you need to hire people to test it and account for failure and wasted parts, which costs money. This also all depends on quantity made, which can raise or lower certain costs in the process of designing something that is supposed to hold up to day to day life for 2+ years.

He fielded that question really well. There are hardware design factors, and I'm sure that it gives them more battery, and maybe even easier to keep it slim, like he said. At the end of the day though, they are doing this to sell OnePlus Buds and the Bullets Earbuds. If OnePlus can deliver quality at a cheaper price than the competition for truly wireless earbuds, more power to them! (In the first few years of no 3.5 mm jack, the buds were expensive and lacked battery life. They're finally becoming something that will last a long time, and cheap enough that if I loose them, it sucks, but it sucks less)

That's not what he said at all... For IP certification not only does the phone have to survive a specific depth underwater but also for a specific period of time. He was asking about the duration of time the phone has to survive underwater.

The CEO'S/Other Employees of the companies usually do get the device early like Apple might get the iPhone 12 series early or Craig Federghi Has been using Mac OS big Sur has been using it for quite a while. So many excellent questions thank you so much Marques I kind of fall in the same area as you do as far as budget or any phone give me a good screen a decent (or best) chip a good battery and camera and I am off to the racesI mean waterproofing is great but if you're going to spend a few hundred even let alone $1,000 on the phone and you're going to drop it in the toilet then I think it's kind of poetic justicethat your phone ceases to work because when you pay that kind of money for something please try not to take it in the shower and try not to drop it at all let alone into water!

Perhaps it may have been intentional, but that “L-Shape” camera cluster looked way too much like the iPhone 11 Pro. Thank goodness they went against it. Because the Nord would probably have been restricted to Asian markets... if not just China by itself due to “consumer confusion” and potential design infringement. - I also don’t agree with OnePlus’ idea of balance on battery/other components vs. headphone jack. Wired headphones just “work”. No need to charge them. I consider them much more essential than my Bluetooth headphones and even the pair of AirPods I own. - True wireless headphones just can’t compete for me with my preferences. I’d rather have a simple, dedicated headphone jack.

Well unfortunately we’re a minority in the grand scheme of things. I agree with you 100%, I’m a huge audiophile. I have a pair of shure’s that I own that I absolutely love. But sucks not being able to use them much, other than on my MacBook Pro. But the trend and what a lot of people are using now a day’s is Bluetooth headphone/earphones. Like beats, AirPods etc. they are selling like hot cakes, and I don’t see that trend stopping unfortunately. I’m just happy MacBooks and laptops in general still have headphone jacks at least for now! 🙌🏼

I appreciate how Carl can be careful with his answers but also seem real and not so...corporate. Feels like a meaningful interview and would definitely be interested in seeing more content like this.

I just realized that this channel really grew and I grew with it. I work in business and technology and product management is a function of my job. I'm loving this kind of content to learn from an apply to my day to day. Marques, you really know your audience. Happy to have been watching all these years. I don't leave a lot of comments though.

Enough people have seen and commented, I'm sure, but man this video was pleasant to listen to. Smart, polite, informative. I've often wondered about the pricing decisions about mid range phones.

He is terrible and a Oppo and Apple shill ,he is always praising Samsungs,One Plus and Apple iPhones and completely ignores the LG and Sonys phones just because they don't pay him to review them. Don't get me started on the Macbooks ,he never criticize them and act like they are always worth the price while in reality they have been engineered to fail and push the customer to buy another one and they have terrible specs for the price.

I love that you kept it real and pushed for answers about the headphone jack, because I know you're just as curious as us.

a little bit of info is helpful.. it does make an impact for us end users.. where are not talking about just the experience but the process it takes into improving a phone in general.. that was quiet an interview right there. good job

This has been one of the most interesting and informative videos I've seen from a tech channel aimed at someone like me (i.e. not hyper-techy but also not completely indifferent to tech) in a really long time. Watching it felt like the early days of watching tech KZreadrs where I came out feeling like I knew more about the general topic than someone who doesn't watch the videos is. It wasn't just reading out specs and telling us what you think about the specs, but an insight into the actual process of design and manufacturing. I'd really really like more videos on this sort of topic exploring how phones are designed, how the Industrial Engineers make decisions, and how cost decisions are made. After watching this I feel like I have some unique insight into the market that I didn't have before. Really really appreciated this video and appreciate OnePlus for being willing to do this.

@@Sam-xn2ie Samsung is planning on not shipping power bricks in 2021. They will all follow eventually and honestly, makes sense. I still have like 2-3 apple bricks in there boxes that I don't use. I use my wireless chargers instead which don't need a power brick.

Yeah Apple won’t come out and say things . But also it’s not about just components cost for Apple it’s the r&d and years of software support that make their products expensive . I’m sure if Apple didn’t develop their own stuff and used off the shelve parts they could price phones like oneplus .
