Something that struck me: Mr. Incredible knows who Buddy is. He remembers him. Which tells me that he does/did know and love his fans. He probably did know a few by name and was friendly and nice to them. Buddy took advantage of that kindness and took it too far. I see a lot of actors like that who remember certain fans by name and I see how pushy fans can be the worst to them.

It's the niceness that people get attached to. And when celebrities who are known for being very friendly and welcoming towards their fans finally snap and tell the minority to "back off"; the celebrity is immediately labelled as mean and cruel by the majority, and has their career destroyed. People love pushing. But they don't like it when you push back.

6:42 theres a very good detail in this movie that in the actual scene of Bob rejecting Buddy he's holding Bomb Voyage prone, dealing with the serious and dangerous situation currently on hand, but in Syndrome's flashback to the scene later in the movie Bomb Voyage isn't even there, Syndrome literally didn't notice or care about him. He made the entire thing out to be about himself.

I'm going to have to rewatch the whole movie for that one scene, now...

Something I realized is Buddy's interference is what caused the outlawing of supers across the board. If he didn't involved with bomb voyage then that incident with the train wouldn't have occurred. And yet Buddy never realizes this, never takes responsibility for his actions. He still only sees his personal vendetta against Mr. Incredible

And Syndrome also chose to ignore bomb's french insults ( he looks french no offense if he isn't though it just sounded french. ) and just gives him a neutral look before arguing with mr incredible again. He also chooses to ignore the near suicide victim that was saved by mr incredible ( who probably thought the guy was gonna regret that jump like i've seen some people do. ) and just chooses to argue with mr incredible. He doesn't help the suicide guy out or attack bomb voyage.

he also never focuses on all the people he's murdered or will cause harm to with his plan, all because he is THAT focused on spiting a specific man for DARING to send him home and yell at him. Syndryome is a childish narcissist, and surprisingly there are peole who think he was a misunderstood hero because of his end goal which was more about getting rich and famous than anything noble.

Im sitting at a good 60/40 that the Train Scandal was less relevant to the fall of supers than the dude whos death Mr. Incredible ruined. People don't exactly have a habit of relating to crowds very well

This is a brilliant scene to tell you everything you need to know about Syndrome. One of my favourite details is how Syndrome seems to misremember the Bomb Voyage scene. In the original scene, Mr Incredible is clearly angry, as Buddy has crossed a line. The kid's interfering with a Super Villain fight, putting himself and others in danger. He says to fly home, and that he works alone, all while still dealing with Bomb Voyage and showing that Buddy is distracting him. When Syndrome remembers it, Mr Incredible is looming over him, casting judgement, and Bomb Voyage is nowhere to be seen. You'd think the bomb on his cape would be something Buddy remembers, that Mr Incredible saved him, but no. Buddy doesn't even recall the danger he was in that night, nor the trouble he caused. He only remembers his hero spurning him, and none of the consequences of his actions.

He's also sadistically playful and funny. He mocks mr incredible for having family when he " works alone " ( despite him having frozone with him as a sidekick ) and even says things like " YOU GOT BIZZAY ". You wouldn't see other good villains like thanos saying that. And Syndrome also probably does remember the bomb on his cape and what not, he just cuts it out to be in denial. His ego overshadows the good things that mr incredible does. The main reason they even saw each other and bomb voyage is because mr incredible wanted to save a suicide victim, probably thinking he was gonna regret the jump soon. Besides why does that guy care about it so much if he WANTED to die and the injuries got him closer?

And it's not just Edna's "No capes" thing. At the beginning Buddy nearly got killed because Bombvoyage attached a bomb to his cape. He only survived because Bob saved him. And at the end again, his cape was the thing putting him in danger, but no one was around to save him this time. Since he had gone full super villian, he was alone.

Style over substance, cosmetic over practicality, it is of course a movie about these things and the cape joke is a perfect encapsulation of it all

Another great aspect of Syndrome's character is his relationship with Mirage. She is the vehicle he uses to convince Bob to come to the island which ultimately leads to his capture. Mirage however is shown not to be as ruthless, soon when she is visibly uncomfortable to play the plane's transmission knowing Bob's wife is the pilot, and is terrified when she hears his children's are also there. This transitions to Syndrome mocking Bob for being alone and Bob grabbing and threatening to kill Mirage in his grief. Bob is of course unable to due the torture of the device he is held in, but this sets up one of Syndrome's biggest flaws: people are disposable. Following this, Mirage blatantly tells him, "Next time you gamble, bet your own life." She then focuses her efforts on helping the heroes, helping Bob escape, telling him his family is alive, and giving them the password to launch the rocket. Because he viewed her as disposable, she helped speed up his undoing. Again, it shows even when he had an organization behind him, he saw them as nothing more than pieces in his master plan, and thus, he was always alone.

It's notable how Syndrome flat out doesn't get why Mirage is pissed off with him. It never seems to cross his mind that she quit and especially that she might help the heroes.

@@Ladywizard Yes, that’s a crucial point of comparison, and one that Syndrome mocks. Bob can’t make good on his threat because he’s still a hero. Syndrome sees this as weakness because he’s nowhere close to being one.

@@JimmyBoy9878 That moment is what turned him from a hero to a human, in my eyes. He was always morally upright and tried to do the right thing and, in that moment, in his eyes, it cost him his family and here was one of the people responsible. But the second he found out his family was still alive, all that rage left him. He had people worth fighting for. If it was only to save himself, he didn't care. But he immediately wanted to be back with his family. The man was a hero for as long as he was human. I love every bit of this movie. Hot damn.

Syndrome is still the best commentary on fandom and how toxic fans find joy in destroying things they supposedly love so much. It’s interesting because he is clearly projecting. As a child he admired superheroes and powers from afar and hating being normal, but all of it created strong feelings of inadequacy and self-hatred. He never really grew past the powerless nerdy kid he used to be, even still geeking out over Bob as an adult while he’s literally torturing him.

hell, he could have struck out on his own as an independent hero. maybe mr incredible should have said "not now buddy. we'll discuss this later when im not strapped for time. lives are on the line here. i might work alone, but that's only because i don't want my fans to be hurt. but you're a smart kid, who's talent i'd hate to see wasted worshipping me. meet me later, when there isn't a crisis, and we'll discuss this further. no need to jump to conclusions based on my curtness. youll hear from me when the time is right. ' buddy is a genius. a super-genius even. with the door open just a tiny bit, he could become the worlds first gadget-based super. but he wouldnt work with mr incredible directly. he would have just been awakenned to the fact that being a super is just as much about wanting to help others, expect nothing in return, and decide for himself if he wished to continue. i do think if mr incredible let buddy down gentler, it would have been a better result for the guy. by how much? iunno. but it might open him up to the possibility of being a real hero is more than ones own powers.

And Warhammer 40k is the perfect example where the *company* that is behind the intellectual property can be wayyyyyyyyyy worse in many cases. Edit. Btw, not arguing against your point. Just pointing out fans are often something that _keeps_ the universe/setting running just as much as the company behind it. And sometimes companies, and even the creators for a franchise are their own worst enemy. J.K. Rowling is a good example of the latter i recon.

I love that scene near the end where Syndrome finally ‘reveals’ himself after saving some people from the omnidroid and instead of cheering him, the onlookers are just like “Who the fuck is he? Is that Fironic?” It visibly pisses of Syndrome that people aren’t behaving like he’s **expecting them to** he wants them to worship him as a hero but even at his ‘greatest moment’ he’s completely deluded.

As smart as he is, he fully expects things to go exactly as planned. This is fully exemplified in the scene after, where he attempts to take down his creation. He expected to beat his learning machine but it blew up in his face when his machine blindsided him.

@@emanuelrojas2 Syndrome's plan to beat the machine was to cheat with the remote. The problem? The robot was never taught to follow along with the plan. If you pause the movie and read the text that appears on-screen through the Omnidroid's vision in the moment before the "blindside", you can see its train of thought: >Arm fell off. Why. >Arm was removed by signal. Locate signal. >Remote sent signal. Disable remote. It *learned* the remote was dangerous to it, and resolved to solve the problem.

Honestly. Syndrome is Pixar’s magnum opus. He really feels like he’s having fun being evil, and his motive, while very evil, does make sense. He wants to get back at the naturally superior people by putting everyone on the same level as them.

and his voice is top notch with the southern accent. The " YOU GOT BIZZEY " line is one of my favorite adult jokes. They don't shove it down your throat like " When a man and a woman lo- " before the character is interrupted. And he's ruthlessly sadistic, like flowey from undertale or that dude from megamind that pissed when he saw fake metro man. In fact i think the latter is quite similar with red hair and what not. One more thing, the only thing close to the syndrome adult joke, is the " suger honey ice tea " from madagascar. Also syndrome's " i was gonna go with bs for baby sitter, but i couldn't. You understand why. " in the jack jack babysitting short. Which for some reason forgets that the baby sitting girl was struggling with syndrome as in he captured jack jack.

Ironically, he already was super, obsessed and amoral as he is, he completely failed to realize that he himself was a super-genius, no normal person could have conceived and built the things that Syndrome did.

its a sad tell when people are clearly lying to themselves by constantly repeating the same thing since in their mind they think "they must not have heard me the first time, since im clearly right and this is all just a misunderstanding, ill graciously tell them again and they'll understand and everything will go my way" the brain does amazingly awful things to shelter a persons fragile ego, its part of the ID, the part of the brain that centers around our most basic desires and its strive to protect them, self image is among those and depending on what kind of person you are, some have very thick skinned egos and others are tissue paper thin and will do whatever it takes to convince themselves more then others that the way they think is correct and others are wrong. The brain is scary when it wants to be.

"They owe you nothing" is a great way to sum it all up. Sure they may put themselves out there in movies and media, but that doesn't mean they want massive attention. And I don't mean the way that everyone knows them in public, but in the way that they cant do their own thing without being interrupted.

Well no, as loyal consumers we are entitled to, at the very least, a product worth our money. This is why the slight point about Star Wars fans in this video is completely wrong, instead of being offered good content, they were given rehashed stories that were used to peddle identity politics, and were called everything under the sun when they chose not to see it.

Another important Syndrome moment was when he tried to goad Mr Incredible into killing Mirage when he was at his most desperate. Mr Incredible was unable to go through with it, and Syndrome dismisses him as weak. This is a woman with whom it is implied in Syndrome's conversation with her was in some sort of romantic relationship, and yet he treated her as a disposable object. He later tries to play off his indifference to her fate as him knowing Mr Incredible was bluffing, but Mirage was understandably upset, and later betrays him to help Mr Incredible and his family escape. Mirage understood that Mr Incredible's respect for life was not weakness, and Syndrome disregarding it was not strength. Bob had more compassion for his enemies than Syndrome ever did for those suposedly closest to him. Deliberately sending missiles to Elastigirl's jet even after finding out their children were aboard was a pretty evil action too.

@@bsgfan1True, but still, he showed no remorse for his actions or even made an attempt to abort the missiles when he found out children were aboard the plane. After a shaken Mirage confirmed the hit he made a callous joke to Mr. Incredible about him "preferring to work alone." The (assumed) deaths of innocent kids didn't bother Syndrome in the slightest; it was just another opportunity to mess with Mr. Incredible.

I really love the implication that in the Incredibles' universe, no superhero would want a Robin because realistically there would be a lot of scandals if a grown man suddenly wanted a random kid to be its sidekick.

And a lot of scandals surrounding children dying or being grievously hurt, resulting in a lot of heroes being locked up for child abuse and negligent homicide. Hero work is dangerous. No sane person would bring a preteen to stop a bank robbery or put out a burning building, so why would they bring them along to fight super villains?

It also supports my belief that telekinesis is an insanely useful power.

His narcissism is even reflected in his flashback. When Mr Incredible tells Buddy to leave, "fly home" as it were, he does so while apprehending Bomb Voyage. But in Syndroms's recollection, it's framed to like Mr Incredible is shooing him away in a scornful demeaning manner. Furthering the point that, he always considering himself a victim.

I remember watching this movie as a kid and being too stupid to realize who syndrome was, so I just thought the film pulled something out of it's rear end.

Ah the Incredibles. A film with surprisingly enough depth that I still keep finding new things in it years after I first watched it. The amount of layers and subtle things in this film really blows my mind every time I re watch it.

One thing I love about Syndrome’s flashback to Mr Incredible’s rejection is the inaccuracies present in the scene. In the original scene, Mr Incredible is more focused on Bomb Voyage, making sure he doesn’t escape and all that, whereas in Syndrome’s flashback Mr Incredible is totally focused on Buddy, making the rejection look so much more personal. Bomb Voyage isn’t even present in the flashback, Syndrome doesn’t even remember him.

The thematic relevance of this (Syndrome wanting to destroy the very concept of a superhero by making anyone capable of reaching their level) is really cool, but it also shows how little he cares about the consequences of his actions, since he’s willing to potentially invite untold chaos out of spite. It’s a great line.

I love the part about not holding the audiences hand. The director of the Incredibles and Ratatouille directed as movies for adults first and children second. This movie and Ratatouille are some of my favorite movies just because of how different they are compared to the other Pixar movies.

I agree, they were trying to have Evelyn serve as a person to argue against heroes with the death of her father but she is right that he was stupid as he tried to call for heroes when the break in took place after heroes were banned, which is more of her father being dumb than the fault of heroes. Nando v Movies fixed the motivation by having it be that the father tried to fight the robbers himself and was killed doing so, plus working in her whole Screenslaver persona by arguing that fiction can make people act out to try and be a hero but he also includes a counter arguement to her's through Winston. I reccomend checking out he full video if you haven't already.

@@Specsboy1999 I think I watched it (I watched a LOT) and I agree with changing the motivation. It would make so much more sense. But, if there is a third Incredibles movie, I want it to be a finale piece. The first is about a Toxic Fan getting power, the second is a adult who saw the repercussion of relying on heroes... so the third would be something like... what if Heroes don't believe in the people they're protecting? Idk, just a thought

@@matthewwilliams8267 That would be an interesting motivation as the only person in universe to think like that was Gamma Jack (from the bonus dvd hero files) and he was pretty powerful. If the villain, be it a hero who has had enough or a bruised ego or someone leading the hate on the heroes, has a strong arguement then it would make an interesting conflict on why heroes save the day, even if it is a thankless job (similar to Spiderman depending on the writer/media).

While I agree the sequel wasn't as good as the first, it's not nearly as big a downfall as most followups tend to be. I appreciate it for it's change in perspective, instead of it exclusively focusing on someone's personal vendetta, it's showing how a variety of social relations & reactions shift because of public opinion being highlighted by the most recent event be it hopeful or harmful. Picking up right after the original the populous is grateful and excited to have superheros back again, but as the villain continues to exploit media to nag doubts about autonomy and different framing (besides the obvious control issue), the supers quickly get called into question just like before. Showing people are as fickle as they are stubborn, regardless if they're powerful whether it be magic or money, yet modern life is self cyclical though spiraling apart; the powerful people control the lives of everyone below them even if they don't intend to, and likewise common folk are taught to rely on those above their station despite potentially having the ability to decide their own fate, case in point the class wage gap and lobbyists. I too still hope for a third movie, though I'd only be speculating what themes it'd cover I'd bet it'd be another change to some other important realization about society.

I think it’s implied in the second movie that Syndrome is at least partially responsible for the death of the main villains father, as the heroes he was trying to call were already dead, having been killed by the Omnidroid

For those who know about MHA (ironically in a video talking about toxic fandom) , Syndrome is exactly the kind of "hero" Stain would target

I love how they made Syndrome fully and pure evil while trying to make it seem as if he was tragic and sympathetic, even when he's just fake tragic and his backstory doesn't justify him in any way. Not every villain have to have an actual sympathetic backstory, just as long as the villains view themselves as tragic

I really like the theory with the original fight vs the first omnidroid was for Frozone. Because it takes Bob to the volcano.

@@briankaslewicz6130 Briefly mentioned (on that night), there's a little radio that Mirage is using. You can hear the radio briefly say "You're sure you want to switch targets?" which Mirage responds yes. This likely means that Mirage was choosing to capture Mr Incredible over Frozone. Probably didn't even realise that Mr Incredible was even in the area until that night. Afterall, if Mirage was tracking Mr Incredible much more before that night, then the location of Elastigirl would also be known (as well as the 3 new supers)

You know... a lot of people really do say Syndrome is the best commentary on toxic fans. And I have to agree, I never noticed it when I was younger. All I saw was 'Oh, this guy is insane and wants to hurt people for his benefit' But now, I see it more as 'Oh, this guy was a fan of superheroes and is insane to the point of wanting to hurt people to become one and put people on the same level' Now, this isn't the same as being Batman, Batman had a good motive for being a Hero. To stop people from getting hurt the same way he did (Even if it is... a bit loose in how he does it). But Syndrome, he's wanting to be a Hero because it's 'fun' and 'full of fame and glory'. Unfortunately, Heroism is not like that. If it was all fun and games, nearly every hero fanboy would be dressed as Superman or Spiderman and going out to save the city. Heroism, in my opinion, is more or less the act of willing to give life and limb to protect those who deserve protection. No matter what. Not everybody *can* be a Hero, they have to be dedicated to the cause of helping people and realize that what they are doing could kill them. Even if they're Superman, they can't always rely on their powers to well... strength. Especially if it has a weakness. Regardless, Syndrome is well written and I like this movie now more then ever. And I'm not even that big a superhero fan.

You know who else had great intelligence, was capable of creating amazing inventions and had the respect of many superheroes without having powers: Edna Mode. It's quite interesting to contrast the two characters in terms of their outlooks: Edna doesn't need the approval of superheroes; Mr Incredible complements her on her amazing design skills and she dismisses it with an offhand remark. Syndrome would have literally killed for that sort of attention. Edna invents for the pure love of it, and to help her friends when they need her. Syndrome invents to amass power and to further his twisted revenge plot. Crucially, Edna never looks back, she learns from the past and moves on with the next big idea (NO CAPES!). Syndrome focused so much on the perceived wrongs done to him by Mr Incredible that it consumed him.

This was captured in Syndrome's "fight" with the Omnidroid: 1) He pulls a classic heroic entrance of appearing out of the blue to save a mother and child at the last second, even after a lot of destruction and likely death. Compare that to the real heroes who are far more pragmatic - Mr Incredible chooses the best point to get ahead of a car chase and doesn't care if he's not visible to the public when stopping criminals. 2) He tosses the fuel truck aside and lets it explode, which is like how superheroes have a bad habit of causing heavy destruction and inadvertently endangering lives. Mr Incredible put the tree back and tried to minimise property damage, but the one time that he lost control of the situation and wrecked a train, it netted him serious trouble. 3) He engages in a horribly choreographed fight and made sure to showboat, whilst the robot he designed to adapt to and overcome superheroes doesn't act like a cardboard prop and turns on him. Mr I, Elastigirl, Thunderhead and many others have quickly incapacitated their foes and kept control of the situation and it was disastrous for them when they slipped up. The second the Omnidroid turned on him, Syndrome found himself realising that superheroics is far more work and danger than he could ever comprehend or handle.

My favorite part of Syndrome's whole thing is that he's twisted how he remembers Mr. Incredible telling him to go home.

Syndrome also subverts that tired trope of the supervillain monologue, and for that, I adore him.

People really think that syndrome could be saved but honestly his intro scene is enough to show you that no matter what he would’ve turned into a monster

I think that if someone had the time to step in when he was still young, he could’ve turned out different and have been a great ally to supers, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time with mr.incredible. Mr Incredible wasn’t unreasonable, but buddy was in his formative years and took everything the wrong way.

Angry nigel has the wonderful quote of 'that was his mistake' making less sense in context than out of it

What's really interesting is that in the original script, Syndrome wasn't the main villain. In fact, he was a one-off introductory villain at the start (set when Bob and Helen were already married and had Violet as a baby), basically the equivalent to Bomb-Voyage

5:21 I just realized that the way the camera frames Syndrome’s face combined with his facial expressions makes him look more like his younger self.

I love how even Bob's desire to help, the thing that actually makes him a hero, is still shut down by his boss time and again. Does he not realize hero work is the capability and drive to help people (which he still has as Bob Parr, insurance worker)? Or is it that he believes superhero work is the only way he CAN have the capability to help people (thanks to his other efforts being shut down)? He's adopted the attitude that Buddy thought he had all along, 'supers need to use powers to be heroes', possibly due to the ban, and it only led him into trouble. I think that's a beautiful comparison.

Something to point out, a lot of people sympathize with Syndrome because he was a skilled inventor being pushed aside for the “special gifted people”. These people forget that Edna Mode exists who isn’t super powered but does have an inventiveness on par with Syndrome, and she uses it to make top quality suits for heroes.

Syndrome reminds me of The Reverse Flash, a guy who idolised and wanted to be like his favourite superhero The Flash to the point he started dressing like him, had reconstructive surgery to look like him and committed crimes just to solve them like his hero. He stopped doing this after the Flash (who accidentally went to the future) put him jail. But like Syndrome being told off by Mr. Incredible he ignored it the first and wanted to be Flash's sidekick. He hurt himself just to get powers go back in time and meet him. When he gets there he learns he was the Flash's archnemisis. Thawn had devoted years of his life to the Flash, to the point he practically lived in the Flash museum after his parents died. He wanted everything the Flash had, the respect, the fame, everything. But when he learnt he was nothing but a foot note he snapped. His obsession ruined him

When I was 8 and saw this movie, I GASPED at, "I am your Biggest Fan". Biggest twist of my young life at that point. No Flashback needed. I was 8 and I got it, and it was incredible. And honestly, the toxic fandom of today makes this movie better and more relevant than it was in 2004

And to think he was originally going to be a side/hench villain. Thankfully, he became the big bad.

Can we point out that Syndrome wasn't powerless, his power is Super Intelligence. It's pretty obvious. You don't just make supertech without a power. Less Super Intelligence so much as Super-Tinkering / Supertechnician, the Thinker or Inventer power more specific to the inspired creation of technology that shouldn't exist, with the power either somehow telling you the right bits and bobs to twist and turn to produce supernatural effects similar to an arcane formula in 3D, or the super power brute force MAKES the invention work.

Characters with the Super-intellegence Power are also more likely to be narcissistic and alone. Unless they have gadgets or other powers, they are considered the "power-up" character, which isn't as glorious. Spider-man's Tinkerer (comic) is an example of such a person. A villain, yes. But while Spider-man's villains are usually geniuses in their own right, when they get beat down too many times, they go to The Tinkerer for a full-on Upgrade. Syndrome COULD'VE been like that. Or Tony Stark, who is also a Super-intellegence Powered person. His affinity for technology and machines is natural. Before his accident, he would've sold the Suit for money. But that bomb did more than make him a large electro magnet. It revealed his problem: he was hurting people, and was blinded to it. But both of these characters have something in common: they were narcissistic loners, trying to block out the world. One was famous. One wanted fame. And one was content, living in shadow.

You can also argue that in a world where some people can stretch their bodies in to any imaginable shape and others can fly and shoot beams of energy out of their very flesh, that being a bit cleverer than average isn't a super power. So Batman, Ironman and Syndrome can all get together and cry about how nobody understands how hard it is to be a superhero without any powers. Spiderman, who has all the powers of a spider is also an inventor. He invents the web shooters (for some reason) and later designs hi tech materials for his spider suit. Since spiders are universally not good at science, we can assume that the ability to invent things is a skill acquired by Peter Parker rather than a mutant ability from the soider bite. For Syndrome's speech about making everyone "super" (so that no one is!) to make sense, its clear that he understands super powers to be abilities that are unobtainable to normal people, even through luck of the draw. It seems Mr. Incredible was simply born with super strength, probably most heroes in this movie are just naturally occuring. If his strength was a result of extensive training, its unlikely that he would ever be able to life train carriages over his head. There is no strict definition for what Super powers are, or aren't. What counts as Super in the Incredibles might be different to the Marvel Universe, DC's universe, or any given writers interprations. Syndrome/Buddy has a quite specific thing in mind though, he means naturally acquired superhuman abilities. Super intelligence could be a Super power in his world, but only if the person is so smart that a normal or average person could never get to that level through practice and study. If Supers are just highly skilled people, none of his monolouge on the subject would make sense. Nobody would need weapons to become more powerful if they could simply train to become their best selves. Supers are a class above even the highest level athletes so the same should be true of inteligence.

In other words ...Syndrome is an example of what Tony Stark could/would have become, if he never chose to use his extraordinary talents & skills to become Iron Man the hero but a far darker figure -- a cynical war profiteer ("The Merchant of Death") who invents a new generation of cyber-enhanced combat armor & weapons purely to increase his profits, stroke his own ego & forward his self-serving agenda. In that case, Tony Stark himself would have become the Warmonger....

you know. id go so far to say the whole incident that lead to supers being banned? was ironically thanks to buddy. that train wouldnt have been derailed had he not make himself into a target for bomb voyage. should mr incredible been a teensy bit gentler? maybe, but he was already giving buddy WAYYY too much kindness by his first appearence in the film.

@@idiocyincorporated7635 it's also kind of funny. in comics, you don't need powers to be a hero. buddy could VERY WELL HELP PEOPLE on his own with his gadgets. i havent seen a single gadget-based hero in the incredibles universe. buddy could have been the first. and he could have made that choice when mr incredible told him to go home. he could have saved a kitten from a tree. get people out of burning buildings. all without getting in the way. it's a big city and theres only so much mr incredible could do. buddy could have helped mr incredible by solving smaller incidents or rescuing people from disasters and actually be a hero in his own right. he might have gained mr incredibles respect. but nope. he took the wrong meaning from his encounters, he was just THAT dead set on mr incredible that he didnt think to do anything else. he had the ability to be a hero. but in the end he chose not to.

Maybe Mr. Imcredible should have been gentler, or maybe the kinder thing to do would have been to double down on the harsh words and make Buddy realise that he's not a hero before its too late.

There's a detail that doesn't relate to the video, but I just realized it and really like it. If you pause at 6:00 and look around Syndrome's eyes, it seems like he took a blue marker and colored in the area around his eyes that the mask didn't cover. It really shows how obsessive young Syndrome is that he noticed this and tried to correct it. Just a wonderful dedication to detail.

I think the reason why Syndrome idolized Mr. Incredible so much is because he never had a father in his life, so he gravitated to Bob as some sort of father figure. So, when Bob rejected him twice, it hurt all the more to him. He was also most likely ignored as a child, and yearned for the fame and glory that a superhero life could bring him, so he could finally feel noticed and respected. Syndrome looked at superheroes like they were celebrities, while ignoring that what makes a true hero isn't having awesome powers or stopping villains, but helping people and inspiring them to do and be better, simply because it's the right thing to do.

Remember: "When Everyones Super! No one will be"

This does remind me of sad stories of fans killing their celebrity idols (such as Christina Grimmie) Because when they do they become part of their legacy And they’d rather be the villain in their story Than not being in it at all.

So there's a detail I hadn't realized for the longest time, or maybe I'm reading into it too much, but the line 'you sly dog, you got me monologuing!' stuck out to me, because I realized that Mr. Incredible only had two short lines in that whole scene- 'Buddy?' and 'I was wrong to treat you that way, I'm sorry.' Neither of those was prying for any kind of background information or goading him into a rant about his plans. Not only can Syndrome not claim responsibility for his own actions, *he can't even take responsibility for his own words.*

Honestly one of my favourite villains in all of animation, I love how far Syndrome is willing to go to make his point.

6:49 Watch Bomb Voyage's facial expressions; he actually seems to be mildly offended when Mr. Incredible turns his back to deal with Buddy! Pixar really was a absolute juggernaut back then.

The fatal flaw with Buddy/Syndrome's personality is his ego. He was a brilliant kid bt he was petty and arrogant so turning to The Dark Side was inevitable.

It's important to remember they owe you nothing when you give them money you are pouring into thankless pockets of people who will never know your name, you are a means to their end and once your usefulness is over it's like you will never have existed. It's a hard lesson for people to learn, but the sooner they learn the better.

The best example of this I can think is the 80s Transformers movie. When they killed Optimus Prime and several other characters because their toys weren't selling and were being replaced with new ones. All the producers had to say was "We didn't think anyone would care" because in the end, it was just a really long ad

Bless you, sir, for revealing some additional layers to possibly my favorite movie of all time. I got to 6:24-6:29, “this… is a lie” and leaned forward on my sofa. You’re absolutely right. Syndrome isn’t just suffering from inferiority issues and casts himself as the victim, but is deeply delusional. Bob does a sort of tense eye roll when Syndrome talks about respect and being a threat, like he’s thinking “oh god, he’s a killer, he’s stronger than me, and his grip on reality is flimsy at best.”

Alrighty, I just stumbled upon this "One Villainous Scene" series, and I love it. Hearing people talk about some of my favorite scenes from some of my favorite movies is awesome. The Incredibles has and always will be one of my favorite movies, and hearing someone talk about one of the most well-written scenes in the movie (which is surprising, seeing as the entire movie is super well-written), but the way your essay is structured and comes across is just awesome. Seriously, 10/10. I love the subtle references (like the Bill Wurtz-style bit when the Omnidroid gets the jump on Mr. Incredible), and the Lightning McQueen bit caught me by surprise, but it was oddly really funny! Great work, keep it up

This made me wounder if a character from the sequal is meant to be a representation of positive fandom. (spoilers for the second movie) Winston Endevour, like Buddy, is a fan of Supers, but where Buddy fixates on Mr Incredible, Winston is a fan of Supers in general, being polite, respectful but enthusiastic in there pressence. He wants to make them legal again, but doing this puts himself, his sister and his company in danger, as his plan is violating the law, taking a big personal risk in this endevour (No pun intended). He also recongnizes that the main problem along the way is the preception that most people have of supers (they are too destructive and have a high risk of causing collateral damage), and understands that that view needs to be changed first before they really bring about the big change. He has a nostalgic, positive perspective on Heros, and generally belives that the world would be a better place with them. And at the end of the movie when Evelyn tries to flee and drag him along, he returns to the ship to help save the mindcontrolled heroes and ambassadors. Winston is thus a representative of the positive side of fandom. He genuinely loves his interest and wants to share it with others. Despite his loving and nostalgic view on supers, he recognizes a genuine flaw with their approach, and his low key criticism is to correct that flaw. And at the end, when he saves the people who are mind controlled, he dosn't run to join up with his heroes, but helps where he actually can, letting the professionals do their job undisturbed. showing that he takes inspiration from the Supers, but sticks to what is reasonable.

Everyone wants to think they matter, some take that too far with those they idolize. I was at a concert with a significant other for a band I’d never heard of, but they seemed pretty cool, I got a poster signed by all of them. Can’t remember the band name or where the poster is, don’t think I even still have it, not a big deal. When those guys came out, I was walking casually towards the meet up spot and DEAR GOD. The barricade caved in a frightening amount when the girls spotted the band. It was genuinely terrifying. And the screaming. I feel bad for those guys. It’s at that point you have to remember two things: They’re just a human being, they don’t need to be put up on a pedestal. They’re a human being too and deserve as much respect as you do.

I also like to point out; being special and wanting to be special are two different things. With Syndrome, he puts on special equipment and a hero facade as a means appearing more than he actually is. Meanwhile, Mr. Incredible is natural talented with his powers and is a great guy in general. Mr. Incredible will always be the better man than Syndrome and the fight with the second big robot only solidify this point.

Syndrome reminds me of Reverse Flash as well- so obsessed with a hero that he wants to be him. And since he can’t, he does the opposite.

There's a good chance his personality was based off the Reverse Flash with sprinkles of Lex Luthor

I always took Syndrome's line about his name not being "Buddy" as literal. That that's just what Mr. Incredible called him because he never found out the kid's name rather than him rejecting his civilian name for his cape name. Also, separately, I do believe that Mr. Incredible could have handled Incrediboy's interference better. Make a point about it not being about having powers, but because of his age and not wanting to be responsible for a child's life like that.

Yeah but in Mr. Incredible's defense the guy was trying to deal with multiple things at once while on a time limit. See if you are so patient and eloquent when you have so much on your plate at once.

And when I think about how originally he was supposed to show up in the beginning of the story without all this backstory and introduction and he wasn't supposed to be the main antagonist at first, just makes this even better.

When I saw the incredibles in cinemas, I was so surprised by how much depth there was. I was only a kid, but I wasn’t expecting to actually feel much watching it. I was expecting a goofy superhero movie, but it really has a lot of social commentary in it, which I really like. It’s one of the few Pixar movies that I still have to this day, that I still watch. It’s just a genuinely really good movie!

Was using a clip of Jason Lee in Mallrats an intentional nod to the voice of Syndrome, or just a happy accident?

I mean not that I want to defend Syndrome here, but there's an argument that Mr. Incredible specifically because he's a hero with super strength should be more careful, but I mean we see Buddy a bit later on and he's fine so it clearly isn't a huge problem

The rejection didn't set him on the dark path. His own lack of maturity and physcopathic tendancies did. Syndrome forgets that Bob saved his life.

This was so satisfying to watch.

There's an interesting theory on the Super Carlin Brothers channel that basically proposes that Syndrome clearly has daddy issues and I can't help but agree with the sentiment after hearing the lines again in this video. Though, yeah can't help but agree that Buddy did push too many boundaries and wanted Mr. Incredible to fuel his own ego than actually help.
