I have an outside perspective on this as someone who saw the movie translated to Polish in middle school while I was still learning English and I rewatched it properly only a few years ago - the movie still worked for me despite many of the references not landing due to different culture because the makers of Shrek knew the FORBIDDEN KNOWLEGE. What is the FORBIDDEN KNOWLEGE? It's the fact that reference is not a joke and if you want to put one in your movie you better make it funny either way or risk it being unfunny to everyone who didn't get it or who watches it years later. For example - I had no idea of who OJ Simpson even was so the reference was meaningless to me but the medieval knights following modern US police procedures was still amusing regardless.

Exactly. I had no idea the Tick Tack line was a reference to an Eddie Murphy movie, but I still laughed because after Shrek used his powers of ugly and disgusting to scare away Donkey the only thing that phased him was his bad breath and he needs a highly recognizable name brand breath mint.

My fiance is also Polish, and she swears the version she grew up with is better than the original. According to her, the Polish dub actors improv'd most of their lines and came up with their own unique jokes and references, which landed with her as a kid. So when she watched the English language version last year with me, it didn't measure up.

Fun fact: Shrek 1 Polish dub was so influential to Polish dubbing history because it was the first Polish dub to replace American references with Polish ones mostly political. It spawned Polish dubs in its style called "Shrek Clones" which are made to this day. Even the MCU & Disney's animated movies Polish dubs are "Shrek Clones".

Something similar happened with the Latin American Spanish dub made in Mexico. Added references in Mexican dubs weren't something new, but the fact that Donkey was voiced by a famous Mexican actor and comedian, Eugenio Derbez, and that they let him and the rest of the crew ad-lib some jokes have made Shrek of the most popular animated movies in Latin America. In fact, Shrek's dub actor, Alfonso Obregón, dubbed a character in the anime Chainsaw Man and the official KZread clip uploaded by Crunchyroll has a Shrek reference in its title.

Shreks romance with fiona represents a man struggling with maintaining his faith, “the swamp” represents a life of sin. Donkey represents the Holy Spirit. When shrek lives in the swamp with fiona it represents Shrek accepting Christianity into his life of sin, and as fiona takes the form of an ogre it means that despite faith sin is inherent, but that doesn’t make you a bad person necessarily

According to the original story, the robber got scratched by a cat, bitten by a dog, kicked by Donkey, and the rooster crows at him. The robber went to his companions, claiming that he got attacked by a witch who scratch him with her fingernails (cat), a dwarf who stabbed him with a knife on the leg (dog), a monster who hit him with a club (donkey), and the bats screeched from the rooftop (rooster). The gang of robbers left the cottage and the animals live happily ever after in Bremen.

With fairy-tales being pop-culture, I'd say pop-culture is sort of recent by definition. Where it ends is a bit unclear, though. For example, Batman kinda blurs the line. I'd say reimaginings and "public domain" are big aspects, which is part of why Batman blurs the line. It has reimaginings, but you still associate it with a specific brand.

9:00 Oh well in that case, Society will just pull a Mythbusters/Dungeon Master. Where in they assume it's from Shrek and quote it as such (which has quite a bit, as people do imitate Shrek's Scottish accent when saying the line, or imagine it in a Scottish accent when reading it). The original bit I'm referring to is of course, Adam Savage's famous quote of "I reject your reality and substitute my own." which is actually originally from the B-Movie, Dungeon Master, but since Dungeon Master is a B-Movie and Mythbusters is popular as fuck, people just generally attribute that quote to Adam instead of the movie because they don't know the true source. I know this, I was the same with that quote. They even make a joke about it in Sword Art Online Abridged. Course you can also pull a "Beam me Up, Scotty" and say it wrong as "I reject your reality and substitute it for my own." which is a minor change but still, as that's how I tend to remember the quote.

I've only watched this movie dubbed and it has always landed wonderfully. Most of the references (leaving aside Disney/Fairy Tales) rely heavily on anglophone culture and even 20y ago I think an adult from other culture would have missed most of them. But Shrek's strength is on its story, not its references, they're just a cherry on top for those with that knowledge. The tropes it jokes about are still rampant on today's international culture, so I'm pretty sure it will stand strong for at least a few decades more.

Here I thought donkey's riffing at the end of I'm a Believer was because he was established as an Otis Redding fan, not realizing it was a reference to a totally different version of I'm a Believer the movie based the sequence on. And donkey liking the boulder being a reference to the story of the donkey and the pebble??? The references in Shrek go much deeper than I originally thought

Honestly a few of the references you mentioned as not making sense if you don't know the source material are things I never even questioned as a kid, I thought the slow motion scene with Fiona was just a funny bit where she's so good at fighting that she can take a break mid-kick to adjust her crown.

It's amazing how in depth you've gone here! Good job! When I watched it for the first time as a ten year old, most of the references went over my head, but I still enjoyed it. As a Brit, I'm used to this when watching Seinfeld or other such things. A good movie is a good movie, regardless of aged references.

shrek has aged amazingly, the references are not annoying, you don't miss anything from not getting a pop culture reference (i had no idea that that one police scene was a reference, thought it was just a parody on police violence and still laughed when i was a child)

I’m sure the musical is great. People just aren’t used to musicals. I’m talking about musicals as in stage plays not Disney movies. Shrek is very fantastical which makes it harder to pull off in a musical. People just prefer animation which makes Shrek look better than what can reasonably be done in stage plays. That is, there’s likely a lot of bias involved. Don’t worry! The people criticizing probably haven’t actually seen the Shrek musical or typically enjoy plays. They just saw something online and voiced an opinion. Or they happened across it on Netflix.

I work in a school and we had our grade 7's analyse fairytale tropes through Shrek. Many of the students had actually never seen the movie, the only exposure they had to the movie was through memes. They were not the most excited to watch it. Even though most of the pop references went completely over their heads they still actually enjoyed the movie and thought it was very cleverly done. The few students that said they didn't enjoy the movie seemed to base their dislike off the idea that the memes make jokes out of it, so it must be uncool. I for one enjoyed that unit most profusely. I spent the unit laughing my head off at some reference in the movie while students looked at me like I had lost it.

Wow, that sounds like a really interesting class! Wish I had that in school, haha. But fascinating that the memes gave some negative opinion of the film, like the memes were detrimental to the films popularity, rather than the opposite (which is what I would have assumed)

  • @sirama31

    @sirama31

@@eddache Every student in the class absolutely knew of Shrek without watching it (which is a pretty amazing feat considering it came out over 20 years ago), but since most of the exposure is from the memes which somewhat paint Shrek in a sarcastic light (or just as a dirty meme), The students seemed to view the movie as going to be a complete joke (and I don't mean comedically). The movie itself was a meme to them. A few maintained that view, but the majority ended up openly enjoying the movie especially when given context. It is definitely interesting seeing how Shrek's internet presence has translated into younger generations.

Friar Tuck in the swing with the accordion is a reference to Disney also. It's gone from California, but I believe it is still in Florida. "The Country Bear Jamboree." There is a female bear that comes from the ceiling on a swing while singing and playing her accordion.

Also fun fact, Rupert Holmes who did The Piña Colada Song was seeing a bit a of a resurgence at the time of Shrek's original release. Having done the first original series on AMC in the mid 90s before getting some Tony awards for some musicals he did after.
