    One thing about the nuns, not wanting to purchase birth control is that birth control is absolutely not only used to stop a person from having a pregnancy. If someone has a very heavy periods, using birth-control can help that issue. So, that makes birth control an important part of Healthcare.

    I was persecuted by my fellow Christians for voting Democrat and NOT supporting Trump. I was called a Marxist, baby killer, and pure evil. One prayer circle of ladies actually shiuted at me "Get out of my house!" for simply asking a question about what was being taught. Either congirm or leave. I gladly exited stage left. I also shook the dust off of my feet, literally and figuratively. I am more in love with Jesus than ever. I walked solo happily for some years, but recently found a group of believers with respect for one and all. Politics are never mentioned. Jesus is our mutual attraction and reason to engage with one another. We mingle, all racial groups, and evonomic backgrounds, and ages, and worship our creator God together. Im loving it. Jesus is front and center of everything said and done. Love permeates the atmosphere. We meet in a school auditorium. Simplicity, honesty, brotherhood around our shared love of God. ❤

    Hard to imagine that a secular Jew would understand the teachings of Jesus better than some actual self identifying Christians. Looking forward to seeing the documentary and praying that Christians will reexamine how their faith plays out in their everyday lives. Certainly the world needs more Jesus.

    I looked it up. While it was interesting, it didn’t really seem aligned with any sort of revealed truth… for example, he seemed to say “there is no separation” between us and God… but of course we know from a biblical perspective, we are at enmity with God, and Christ bridges the gap. What is it about Marshall Davis that you like?

  • @mattskionet

    @mattskionet

    @@jtiner72 Thanks for responding. Yes, he is saying there is no separation between us and god, which is also consistent with the Yogic (Hindu) tradition. Christian mystics like Meister Eckhart share this view. What their approach suggests is that it’s important to pay close attention to Jesus’s words and actions for spiritual guidance but not to rely on the Bible as an authority for what is true. Because when we look into the origins of the Bible we see it was assembled by people with agendas of their own who never knew the historical Jesus. Some gospels, like Thomas, were suppressed likely for political reasons. Non-Duality is difficult for our western minds to understand but to me it is the most coherent lense with which to view all the great religious traditions.

  • @jtiner72

    @@mattskionet Mathew, that is helpful and interesting. I do like exploring other ways of thinking about things, but I think your point is valid about “western minds”. You also make an interesting points about being careful with Bible as Authority (though for me, I think the caution is to be careful as a believer to discern if our Authority is some tradition of how to read and understand the translation we have vs. acknowledging we should approach it with kid gloves and humility since there is a long and confusing scriptural legacy with fascinating variants to boot) That said, for me as one who has believed in Jesus Christ and have trusted him wholeheartedly (to apply the sacrifice he made on the cross for my sins), a teaching of these sorts you have referred me to don’t really do anything beneficial for me. I suppose for the one who is searching and has not yet stumbled across the true Jesus, maybe a teaching of this sort could appear appealing. I guess for me nothing is better than the Christ of the Bible. I really appreciated the Mike Cosper interview with Rob Reiner because our Christian faith does need to wrestle with these forces that are undermining the faith… and non-violence in the way of Jesus is the way to follow him. Well, maybe I took a tangent. I’d love to hear from you further. ☺️

    @@jtiner72 Hi Josh, I appreciate your perspective, thanks for sharing. I really loved the interview with Rob Reiner, the dialogue between people with differing histories and views, and the way Reiner (who like myself grew up in a secular household without any organized religion) ends up very much enamored of Jesus's teaching and urging us to focus on that. I'll try to say a few words about my connection with non-duality. When I was young my world view was strongly atheist. I took an interest in Buddhism because a) there was no talk of "god" and b) the emphasis was on relief from suffering. I took up meditation practice but found it difficult to be consistent. Both Buddhism and science valued evidence and direct experience over belief and this appealed to me. Later on I learned more about how Buddhism was an outgrowth or even a sub-sect of Hinduism. I also saw that most of the spiritual teachers I gravitated towards would often refer to Jesus's teachings. And I was pleasantly astonished to find out that the Old Testament says that "I am" is god's name! Because in the meditative traditions one thing that we come face to face with is that "I am" is about the only thing in our experience which we can be sure of. We really don't know if the events of this world are a dream or not. But we do know with absolute certainty that we are aware right now. We know that I Am. I like the way Rupert Spira (he's on KZread) put it: God needs our eyes & ears to know a world. 🙏

    @@mattskionet Thanks for sharing! It’s very fascinating. For me Jesus’ claim to be “I AM” is a huge affirmation that he is the Lord Jehovah, unchanging yesterday, today, and forever. I guess my favorite piece of evidence for the historical truth claims of Jesus being valid was the actions of the apostles post-resurrection… who knew whether they were making up a story about having seen Jesus Christ risen or not… and if they had been making it up they would not have laid down there own lives in “martyrdom” had they been “making it up”. From there, we can trust their direction, which is generally unchanged in the historical record of scripture fragments… to say, believe that there is a separation between us and God due to us “missing the mark” and trust that “the work” Christ did on our behalf on the cross is the only way to “truly cross the bridge” to unity with God. Once we do believe is this he deposits his Holy Spirit into our hearts and we can walk in fellowship with him, only breaking fellowship when we “go our own way” rather than trusting and obeying his promptings… which by the way are rooted in a more perfect love than we can even comprehend. I hope you stay on a relentless search and reach out to the Jesus Christ of the Bible… reject the “Christian religiosity” that you see, but if you do enter into relationship with Jesus try to find a church home where they will help direct you to grow in an authentic non-judgmental faith. I’d love to hear more from you. ☺️

    Those who wrap themselves in the flag and scream about ''their'' God being the one true God delude themselves. There aint no God to begin with and if there was, the pantheon of Gods that have long preceded JC would have more credibility. As Gandhi so succinctly put it, '' I LIKE your Christ, not your Christians, they are so UNLIKE your Christ. ''

    Thank you for this interview! I wish I could tell Rob Reiner how "All In The Family" shaped my formative years in a southern state to keep me away from bigotry. As a Christian, I have one voter's guide: Matthew 25:31-46. In this passage, Jesus reveals exactly what the Judgment of Nations will look like when He returns. "Nations" in Biblical Greek is translated as "people group"...so, Jesus says the nations will be separated as the sheep from the goats. Notice what He mentions, and most notably what He does not mention as being part of this Judgment. I have not voted Republican since 1988 because this is the passage in Scripture that tells me what a Christian nation looks like. One nation (people group) will be welcomed into joy; the other will be cast away from the Lord forever.

    Jesus teaches that he is the only way. “I am the way, the truth and the life. no one comes to the Father except through me” John 14:16 He did not come to earth to start a religion. He came to save us from our devolving selves. The word Christian is used only 3 times in the New Testament. The term didn’t exist when Jesus walked the earth incarnate.

    It is not fair to group all Christians with these evangelical nuts. However, it is disappointing to see so few politicians of faith stand up for the principles of their faith. Mitt Romney set a good example but he did it when he knew he was leaving. Term limits are needed to help prevent these politicians put their constituents first and not their desperate desire to be reelected.

    Quote from Pg 35 of 'Introduction' to Melville's Moby Dick, stating what Coleridge, long ago, had observed of Milton: '' The character of Satan is pride and sensual indulgence, finding in self the sole motive of action. It is the (Satan) character so often seen in little on the political stage. It exhibits all the restlessness of temerity, and cunning which have marked the mighty hunters of mankind from Nimrod to Napoleon...'' Doesn't that sound like anyone we know?????!!!!! '''...the character ...is temerity, boldness, pride and sensual indulgence...'' and '...finding in self the SOLE MOTIVE OF ACTION'...'' . Donald Trump 'to a tea'.!!!!! When I read this, I immediately thought of D.T.'s Satanic character. The unconscious is so powerful.....and dangerous.

    This conversation helps me recognize the similarities to other historical and present movements. Like, Zionism uses fear for one's safety as a means to a political end too. The argument that victimhood-justifies-committing-atrocities ideology is hardly representative of Jewish teachings. Seeing these unacknowledged wounds of powerlessness also points the way toward healing ourselves and the world. Beginning with recognizing our oneness and "doing unto others...."
