I feel the SAME WAY about this book! I adored it so much - it's like 800 pages, but reads like it's 300! I cannot wait to get the next in the series! 😍

Moral of the story, always listen to Kay!! I am also ashamed of how long I've let this linger on my TBR, but your review just shot it up the priority list! Even though military fantasy isn't necessarily a buzz word for me, I am highly intrigued by all the other things you shared! Love this passionate review 😍

The cover makes it look like some kind of Romantasy with Mermaids...but after seeing some of the hype from the few that have read it makes it sound like something i need to put on my TBR.

I know what you mean about a well written combat scene that uses the location as a major element to it. In Brian Lee Durfee's 2nd book, The Blackest Heart, there is probably the best battle I've read outside actual military history.

My ears always perk up at military fantasy! And I'm also SUPER picky (as a Marine Corps vet who also loves war history) about how all that is rendered in a book. You caught my interest.

I'm wagering the title and the cover are somewhat part of why this isn't so well known. The title is pretty generic, and the cover is pretty boring. Your review, however, makes it sound like it is right up my alley. So, I'll definitely add it to my tbr.

I went to the Amazon page to read a sample before even starting to listen to this review. The first lines I see are about Madame Genevieve Goss and "her queen, patient, friend, and erstwhile lover..." What?

@@ToriTalks2 You have said on your channel (or maybe written in the comments section) that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. Why would you not only promote such a thing, but then not even mentioning this in the review? Absolutely shocking.

  • @ToriTalks2

@@Yesica1993 I am a follower of Jesus, yes. I do not always agree with or model every aspect of every character I read in a book. That would be impossible, and also if every character was exactly like the reader, those stories would not be worthwhile. I do, however, believe very strongly that every person has equal value and is loved by Jesus whether I agree with them or not. I am no better or worse than any other person, regardless of situation or beliefs.

@@ToriTalks2 If the situation was portrayed in the story as the sin it is, that would be one thing. (I would be shocked if that's the case.) The fact that you didn't even hint at this aspect of the story in the review is worrisome. If I hadn't gone to read the sample on Amazon, I would've known nothing of it. Anyway, I appreciate the response.

🚢 Sounds like something I need on my TBR… wait, it already is! 😆 I recall ‘Covers with Cassidy’ saying great things about this book, so I had a search of my tweets and found mention of this from June … 2022, when it first hit my awareness. Apparently I then hauled a physical copy in 2023, so it must have gone on a wishlist back in ‘22, and I cleared that list down in ‘23. So it’s been sat on a shelf awaiting my attention for quite a while. It is the way of us, isn’t it… 🫤
