One Easy Tip to Have a Better Archery Release

If you find yourself struggling to have a clean release in archery, I have 1 tip to make your release better. New archers tend to focus too much on their release hand and this can cause problems. Even archers with experience tend to focus too much on the string hand when trying to clean up their release.

    Great video! I knew my release is not the cleanest but I finally understood and felt what a clean release is when I began shooting compound with a mechanical release. The difference was almost painful. Now I strive to achieve the same when shooting with my fingers.

    New to the sport, joined a local club and bought some solid entry level kit for barebow recurve. A more experienced member advised me to follow through, but I’m sure I immediately committed the errors you attempt to reconstruct here. I can’t wait to apply your shoulder emphasis next session!

    Hi Jake, thursday i tried your warm-up exercices before shooting my new indoor arrows and i took the time to analyse every arrow course because my last limbs were too strong i had a very fast release so the arrows made some curve trajectory before flying straight (worse with lateral wind) now with the new limbs i have the time to build the line : shoulder --arm1-- arm 2 - arrow and ZIP !! i release quieter and the trajectory is pure straight !

    Awesome video. I'm very new to recurves. I'm pretty sure I have my grip right, my anchor point sorted but my release is holding me back, it stuffs up so many shots because of inconsistency and ,I guess, I'm still figuring out how to do everything. I know what I need to do but actually doing it is difficult. Your videos help me understand why and how I need to do things. I'm not sure if I even make sense, but either way, thank you very much, you've been unbelievably helpful, I love your videos and keep them coming.

    I share this because youve been my virtual coach for the last month or so, so the least i can do, as youve helped my progress alot. Still feel i need to work more and that shoulder rotation, its very hard, i doubt none archers have a clue what goes into this sport, and ive learned threw busted blood vessel's to aching neck that theres a right way and a very wrong way too shoot a bow. Monday ill be booking in my class at my local archery club. Im actually curious to see what ive actually learned and how watching you has taught me so far everything i know. I do post what i do on this page, and when i start my course it will be weekly uploads of what ive been tought threw a real life coach, like i wrote im very curious in what she or he will say when they see my form, from someone that as far as they know hasnt shot an arrow before.

    It's funny you talking about trying to replicate what some beginners do, recently I was trying to copy what one of our club archers was doing with her release to visually contrast with one with a proper follow through, so she could see the difference, and I really struggled to do it. No matter how many times I told myself to do a static release I kept following through automatically. It was amusing and frustrating at the same time.

    Sometimes it seems like if I don't do a triple backflip on my release I've done it wrong. When it feels like everything exploded from the center of my chest outward is usually the best shot or a terrible unanticipated mistake while breaking in a new tab. It's hard to say goodbye to an old well favored worn out tab.

    Jake have you any videos on how to release while focusing on follow through and aiming? I know it's not possible to focus on two things at once and if I'm focusing on aiming, I find it hard to make a good clean release. What I'm trying to say is, if I'm focusing on bringing my shoulder around to improve my release, what am I doing regarding aiming? I seen a video from Tom Clum I think his name is and he said aiming should be a subconscious thing, because we can't focus on aiming and release at once.

  • @thewhiskybowman

    @thewhiskybowman

    If you are struggling to do both then I'd suggest shooting at blank bale distance without a target and just work on the release. A lot. When that clean release and follow through becomes ingrained then you start shooting at a target and focusing on aiming.
