In this video we resolve the alternator issue and attempt to make it back to the Bahamas on this Sceptre 36 ft sailboat.

The Quartermaster* I spoke with Mike by phone after his return. First and foremost, Mike is a very experienced and competent sailor in his own right. The problem is Mike is a lake sailor and hasn't had a lot of experience with current, and certainly not Gulf Stream current which can and does reach 4 knots. The real problem is he has a Yanmar 22 hp., 3 cylinder diesel and a heavy 36 ft. sailboat. He's drastically under powered! I assume he put in a15 degree offset coarse to compensate for the current. The boat doesn't have the power to drive through that kind of current which runs from South to North, 24 hours a day! His only option is to continue down the ICW as far down as he can on Biscayne Bay. Then if the conditions are favorable, the next morning, leave early and power sail like hell for North Rock, just North of Bimini!

Hindsight is 20/20. Its going to be intetesting when and if I announce online about my Sailing plans for season 6.. How bold can I be? In 2020 I said I will sail to the Bahamas. I acheived this goal. What is next? Is it possible? Those reading this comment what would you do if you were in my shoes? How far would you take it? And what would you do to realistically acheive these goals? One thing Ive learned is be carefull what you wish for.. it might just happen.. you will be surprised what you can do if you just commit to your dream and take your departure. Hold fast people! Season 6 is in the passage planning phase already and season 5 has yet to end..

Looks like you figured it out. The correct strategy for crossing the gulfstream in a sailboat is to minimize the time in the stream. To do this, you have to take a heading (not course) perpendicular to the stream and not try to swim against it. If you don't do this, all you end up doing is spending more time in the current and end up further North.

Cpt Mike, you certainly know how to entertain. I haven't commented on the last few including the podcast but I checked them out. Not going to diminish your issues, but being in Rio at a marina watching 3 boats trying to leave Guatemala and all three of them coming back more than once, one boat 3 times, due to engine problems. I see the frustration and it's really heart breaking for some. So many people face the same issues and it's all engine related. I'm planning to replace mine with an electric because I don't need the range and definitely don't want the constant tinkering and spare part hunting, but my current diesel engine does actually work and I may be able to leave here very soon. If I get anywhere close to you, I'll definitely come by and buy you a beer to talk stories. Although I was set on doing this regardless, you've certainly inspired me to follow through. Cheers mate!

Congrats on getting south of Miami for the crossing- great decision for a sailboat. Better current and wind angle. Fast motorboats can leave from Miami for Bimini, much more difficult for sailboats. Think of it this way- a 25mph motorboat is about 40 miles traversing the 3mph Gulf Stream so they might be pushed 4-5 miles north during that time and can easily correct angle. A 5 mph sailboat is 8 hours in a 3mph northward current, meaning they can be pushed as much as 24miles north. Assume that was Boca Chita on the north side of the chart you showed and you will be going thru Lewis Cut. A lot of sailboats touch ground, the shallows are crisscrossed with keel marks. Good luck and expect next video's ending will be in The Bahamas.

Mike, your still going to Have To!!!! Sail due east!!!you can’t sit to where you want to go in the Gulf Stream. This is not that difficult, head due East and watch your plot line.your going to travel North East.Give that motor some throttle 😮it’s barely above idle.Head due East until you cross the Gulf Stream then head more North as needed. You better get used to shallow water and anchoring in the ocean too in the Caribbean.Don’t work on the front of the engine while is running!!!You could lose a finger and bleed to death 🙁Also if you stay outside of where the chart has the black line off of land you won’t run aground. When the conditions are good anchor outside to save 2 hours in route to the Bahamas. You’ve been on your boat every day for two years and you still make all the same mistakes over and over.☹️☹️I want to see you having fun in the Islands 🤗🤗

Hey man. Do you have paper charts? All ya have to do is lay out a straight course to like 20 miles south of where you wanna end up. (More specifically, it's 2.5 knots (average figure of gulf stream for total crossing) multiplied by the number of hours you plan to travel at your average speed). Then, use the paper chart to figure your Magnetic heading. Steer that magnetic heading for the whole trip no matter what the chart plotter says. The chartplotter will display a gps heading over ground, which will actually look like a sine wave, but if you have steered the compass course to the point you picked south of your target, the gps sine wave will catch up at the arrival.

I wasn't busting your balls with the comment, just letting you know what works. I did it. I went from West Palm to Memory Rock to get on the Bank. Once I got across, I was within a half mile of the waypoint. Then Great Sale Cay and Green Turtle Cay to clear in. I kept thinking I was going to be too late to catch you in GT because I was sailing all the way down through the Abacos and Eleuthera just to get to the Exumas.
