OK, I have debated saying this, but I think Shaye's solo starting at 2:50 is epic, the best I have ever heard from her. She is at the top of her game here, not because she is technically perfect (she is) but because it is just so damned musical. She just makes the tune soar. I think it compares with the best that Louis Armstrong offered on this same tune.

Right on James, an incredible solo, and I love how she continuously shouts out instruction to the band, she's always on her game!! She's played many incredible solos and this is indeed one of the best IMO.

I'm not going to argue with you James ... it's just that she keeps on offering yet another "moment". For that matter, the whole band is so "on", so often, that I gave up making a "favorites" list a long time ago. I don't think we are kidding ourselves either ... the tens of thousands of "likes", and literally millions and millions of views - from around the world, and by listeners with no training to some who are clearly savvy jazz followers - are persuasive. And here on You Tube there isn't any real promotional hype; just the music itself. My repeated thanks to you and your video colleagues who open the window upon such brilliant music. "It still moves people" - Shaye Cohn. May it blossom yet another century

This is the real deal New Orleans jazz that Armstrong played in his early days. To hear authentic modern renditions of the original music is beyond belief. This is a superb ensemble.

Now THIS is jazz! Excellent work!

Bleach and Flory on the same number - EXCELLENT.

Shae Cohn simply astounds me she has total mastery of that cornet and is true to the music as can be. Bix must be smiling.

Absolutely fabulous. You could run a city on this energy.

Tuba Skinny are a phenomen. My main musical interest is opera, as a listener not performa, and I come from a musical family so musicality is very important to me. For me my favourite is Maria Callas who had passion and a demand of her fellow performer's to give their very best and provide a team effort, no prima Donnas allowed here. I see this in Shaye Cohn and her wonderful team of musicians who always provide a ' band' performance not a series of 'show off' solo's . I think Tubs Skinny's musicality is unparalleled within their genre and I'M so so appreciative of the opportunity via KZread to see them perform, mostly via James Sterling. I do hope this view makes at least a little sense to others who also see the passion, musicality and team work that Tuba Skinny produce in their performance's. I do hesitate to mention an other individual but think Barnaby's Jones has contributed to the band's attidude and performance policy.

I live in Salt Lake City,, UT. I am out in the inner mountain west. I have been here since 2003. I found Tuba Skinny videos on KZread about 3 years ago. I didn’t realize just how much I missed New Orleans styled jazz until I heard them. I. was born and grew up in Louisiana. I used to listen to this type of music nearly all my life until I left. Many thanks for filming this, James. 'Once in a While' was composed in 1927 by W H Butler . Tuba Skinny play it in the key of C. As you can hear, it has an Introduction and then a 16-bar first theme, and a 32-bar [16 + a similar 16] main theme that uses a simple chord progression. Two-bar breaks are often taken on bars 15 and 16 of the main theme - usually on a signal from Shaye; and also sometimes on bars 31 and 32 as a soloist takes over from his predecessor. There is coincidentally a QUITE different song called 'Once in a While' , composed in 1937 by Edwards and Green. It is a lovely ballad of 32 bars - a-a-b-a in structure, usually played at about half the speed of the Butler composition. The structure of the performance in this video: 00:09 INTRODUCTION 00:14 THEME ONE - 16 bar melody stated by Shaye 00:34 THEME TWO - 32-bars, Ensemble, without breaks 01:11 note Shaye's hand-on-head signal, telling everyone to return to THEME ONE 01:13 THEME ONE - the 16 bars this time stated by Ewan on sax, with cornet and trombone support 01:32 THEME TWO - Craig's solo, including the break on bars 15 and 16 and allowing Barnabus to take the final two bars as a transition to his solo 02:11THEME TWO - Barnabus, supported by Shaye and Ewan, Barnabus taking the break at 02:28 and also 'cutting' at bar 31 for the seven-beat long-note break by Shaye, the reeds and himself 02:39 note Shaye setting up what will happen in bars 31 and 32, and the following stop chorus 02:49 THEME TWO - Shaye improvises over the 32 bars, the others playing an interesting well-rehearsed pattern of stop beats, Shaye taking the breaks at bars 15, 16, 31 and 32 03:25 - note Shaye calling 'break' to make sure the others stop playing in bars 31 and 32 03:29 THEME TWO - Ensemble, with Todd taking the break on bars 15 and 16 04:07 CODA - two bars to round it off.

Wow! They just keep getting better. Shaye is simply marvellous here. Beautiful tone, swing, feeling. Power with accuracy, yet somehow relaxed and without strain.

I have often directed bands whilst playing myself, and have found that I can't do either job as satisfactorily as I would like, as your attention is split in so many directions. Bearing this in mind makes Shaye's solo all the more amazing.

I don’t think I have heard a better version and the comments I have read says it all. But I would say how grateful we all are to James Sterling who makes that long journey on a regular basis rain or shine, and sometimes when it freezing cold, to record these great performances. I wonder whether James receives some Devine guidance because there are a number of occasions when he just happens to be present when something magical occurs as in this recording.

Thanks Colin. You bring up an interesting point. I have had the good fortune to be present when magic happens with the bands. Whether it is Divine Providence or just persistence, I have been blessed many times to witness and record for posterity some amazing moments. I have requested the band play "Once In A While" again after this performance but it was not the same. I have come to realize that you can't just recreate those magical moments. Brilliant Again !

Ok, I think this is the best version, and it is not like I have not listened to them play it quite a few times. I desperately hope to hear them play it live next time I see them. It is my favorite of all their traditional tunes. This version benefits from the fullness of Erica and Ewan, but I have to praise Barnabus and Craig, too. Craig is consistently cool. I don't know how else to describe his demeanor both physically and musically.

I saw them later that same year and asked them to play it again. Though it was a fine version the "magic" wasn't there a second time. I was fortunate to capture this performance. I only recorded a few songs that night because I was visiting with Pops Coffee before he returned to England knowing he would not return to New Orleans again.

I am still thrilled by this TS cover of a Louis Armstrong piece from 1927. The whole band performs great, it is hard to single out one component but Shaye's solo starting at 2:49 and culminating in a fanfare beginning at 3:27 simply electrifies me. Oh how I wish I had been there .

That Shaye has really got it! She sure commands attention! She appears to que the band at 3:25 for the Tuba solo coming up at 3:42 and isn’t about to let anyone play through it. What a great group of extremely talent musicians are they! Every one of them! Great people I’ll tell you what! They really entertain! When ever I hear them live or on record, it is like taking a trip back in time!

At 3 minutes 25 seconds she calls 'Break', meaning she wants the rest to be silent while she plays the next two bars. Todd's 'tuba solo' occurs when she signals him to take the two-bar break on Bars 15 and 16 of the final Chorus.

This performance is one of my favorites. Despite the crowded room or maybe because of it (it was during French Quarter Festival week) the band, and especially Shaye, were at the top of their game.

@@billbush1270 This video and “Bye Bye Blues” are my two favorites. Both were magic moments that I was fortunate to record. I almost missed both of them. That night at The Maison I was visiting with Pops Coffee and his wife on what I knew would be their last night in New Orleans because of their advancing age and health problems. We were seated at a table in the back because it was so crowded but I wanted to record a couple of songs so I walked to the front and happened to be recording when they played “Once In A While.” Pops was also present that afternoon at The Cat. Marla announced “Bye Bye Blues” as the next tune while she passed the tip bucket. I thought to myself, that's a nice tune, so I picked up my cell phone to record. But a few seconds later I noticed I had not hit the record button. You will notice that the recording starts after they had already started playing. It wouldn't have been the first time I missed a song because of operator error but fortunately I caught it in time to record a historic and magic moment. Even Chloe and the band recognized how special the moment was. They took a break after the tune and everyone was talking about how special it was.

@@kevuu7791 Listen closely before that. A member of the audience calls out "break" at in inopportune moment so I think this was a subtle way for Shaye to let this guy know who is in charge!

A performance appears to be their "third level" of performance, for which they are paid, and create their musical reputation. It also determines if they will be hired again. Same for festivals. At this level, it's serious, and difficult, requiring full concentration. They can play around at rehearsal, or on the street.

Just outstanding. Shaye ALWAYS seems to count off just the right tempos for these tunes-not easy to do. To play as creatively and brilliantly as she does, plus lead and direct, is amazing.

Only thing we're missing is the dancers. Don't see anyone complaining if a Broadway show tune gets some exposure, Perfect.

As great as Tuba Skinny is and as much as I love the band, their playing suddenly improves significantly when Ewan plays with them. Did you notice Barnabus' counter-melody to Ewan's first solo? Just incredible playing.

Agreed. After hearing Ewan live with TS a couple of years ago I realized just how much of a bluesy feel he has to his playing AND his singing. He and Jonathan Doyle really add a lot to the band when they play with them.

Hi Gordon! I presume by 'Ewan's first solo' you are referring to 1 min 13 to 1 min 33 secs. Just before this, Shaye patted her head, to tell the whole band to go back to the first theme, and Ewan took the lead in playing that theme - pretty much as written, while both Barnabus and Shaye put in some lovely colouring behind him. Then Craig took over - to solo on the main 32-bar theme. He was followed by Barnabus taking the same 32 bars, and ultimately Shaye took them (as in the Armstrong original) against syncopated stop chords. So, strictly speaking, I wouldn't agree that Ewan had a solo in this one.

I'm not comfortable judging which jazz giant is the best. To me, they are not so much giants as gods, and who am I to judge them? Perhaps Louis and Shaye weren't even trying to do the same thing. Louis Armstrong crafted and performed amazing trumpet compositions, hitting notes that we can acknowledge are beyond Shaye's reach. My view is that Shaye Cohn's best instrument is not the piano, violin, cornet or any of the other instruments she commands so comfortably. Her best instrument is Tuba Skinny, the band, and she is unsurpassed at creating an ensemble sound that amazes and delights us all. If she is less of a solo star than Louis she might be a bit more of a genius at designing thrilling arrangements.

Well said Steve. The strength of Shaye and Tuba Skinny is their ability to assimilate the music that came before them and distill it to the essence and make it feel new again. They do this not just with traditional jazz, but also with early blues and early New Orleans R&B (and even the occasional bluegrass or country song). Although when asked Shaye and the other members of the band will say that the choice of music and arrangements are the result of collaboration and a democratic process among them all. With that being said it is pretty obvious that Shaye is the de facto the leader of the band. Among the pantheon of trumpet players Louis Armstrong sits on the throne as an innovator, stylist, and technician, and as I said before Shaye's playing can't compare technically with Pops. But musically, particularly in this performance, her phrasing and voice on the instrument are impeccable. My enjoyment from music comes not from the technical aspects, playing fast, double and triple tonguing, hitting screeching high notes (what I call acrobatics on the horn), but from the emotion the music conveys in how it flows. To me it is a window into the mind of the player, and I think we can all agree that Shaye has a beautiful mind!

Yes, everyone contributes to the excellence of the band's music, and yet it is clear that Shaye shapes things and is responsible for much of the excellence of Tuba Skinny. Her work with that band in Australia highlights what she brings to trad jazz. Shaye has a low threshold for boredom, which is a clumsy way of saying she demands freshness, intensity and variety. Pops Coffee has helped us understand that. Few listeners are able to see her impact on the rest of the band, but the loyalty of her bandmates is one powerful endorsement of what she is doing. You are doing holy work, James, helping all of us appreciate her accomplishment.

Agreed. The band was at its best when Ewan Bleach and Jonathan Doyle were playing together. Craig is a fine reed player but there was magic when Ewan and Jon were there.

Thanks James, and yes ! Yes!! Do take a listen. Have all of the Hot 5's & 7's for 20 years now. Heard Louis on old 78's on Gramma's Victrola in the late 40's. I 'found' Tuba Skinny while searching You Tube for Armstrong.

Wonder if I'll live long enough to hear Shaye hit a wrong note. Probably not!

I once (only once in many hours of listening to TS) thought I heard Shaye hit a bum note, but then she worked the same note somehow into the next 4 bars, and then again, and then again.... and the overall effect was pleasing. So I wasn't even sure if she had played that deliberately, or whether she had recovered from a mistake in such a skillful way that it was completely covered up.

Reading all the comments on this video, and many others featuring Tuba Skinny, I am wondering what it would take for a record company (or the modern equivalent) to sign them up, record them, and distribute their music worldwide.

While that is a nice thought, two things come to mind. One, this music is a very small niche in the overall music market and while the fans of it are passionate, they are not numerous. Two, if you are watching them now on KZread then you are seeing how their music is distributed, as it is responsible for their worldwide exposure. The band's music can be ordered or downloaded from anywhere in the world from their website tubaskinny.com/music, Bandcamp, or physical copies can be shipped from The Louisiana Music Factory.

I have listened to Louis and Shaye several times and find the first named version technically the best but Shaye is not far behind and T S version is more enjoyable and being second to Louis is not a bad place to be for my beloved Shaye, love her and the whole band

I agree. Though she can't match Satchmo technically, Shaye gives her own interpretation to the tune that is right up there with Armstrong musically. It was a magic moment that I was thankful to witness.

IMPROVISED COMPOSITION. Agree with Lem Briggs. But yes, it is the great Shaye, an almost unique case in the world (not even the genius Ellington, even on another level, dared to MAKE the picture CALLING THE COLORS live from the ... palette IMPROVISING at the moment of execution, as she does. Even just for this TYPE of improvised orchestral COMPOSITION Shaye Cohn deserves great artistic consideration. Amateurism really marries, indeed, reveals better, genius.
