Oman: History, Power and Influence | Al Jazeera World

Tribes, wars, colonisation, empire, rebellion, independence and reconstruction - this is the compelling history of the Gulf state of Oman, from the 16th century to the present day.
Oman began as a trading nation but was then colonised by the Portuguese. Local Omani leaders later expelled the Europeans and went on to use their own powerful navy to build an empire that, at its peak, stretched from the Arabian Gulf halfway down the coast of East Africa. But the British then arrived in the region and used their own considerable naval power to gain control of the Gulf route to India.
The plot then thickened as Britain’s deals with the sheikhs on the northern coast caused them to separate from Oman itself - and ultimately led to these Trucial States forming the UAE a century later.
Oman played an important role in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and is sometimes known as "the Switzerland of the Gulf" because of its neutrality.
This documentary takes us up to the death of Sultan Qaboos in 2020, his succession by Sultan Haitham and the appointment of the new Crown Prince of Oman in January 2021.

The Sultanate of Oman is indeed a beautiful country. It is rich in unique history, wonderful nature and warm people. I was in the country when Sultan Qaboos died. The love for this late sultan was omnipresent. I wish the new sultan every success. I think it is important to maintain the neutrality of Oman. The country is located in a conflict-ridden region. This region needs a strong Oman.

It’s amazing how Sultan Qaboos was the longest serving head of state in the Middle East. A lot has changed around him since he founded modern-day Oman. The fact that Oman survived all that shows just how successful and good a ruler he was.

This history is critical and has played an important role in the lives of millions - from Oman to Mozambique - Zanzibar, Pemba, Mombasa - to Goa, India and beyond. The rulers of this region figured out 500 years ago - how all of humanity mattered and could like in harmony. Much like the idea of being a World Citizen - easily said but difficult to attain. We owe a lot to the people of the present region in the Middle East - riddled with conflict - today the United States aids Saudi Arabia - to kill and maim - infants, children, youth, young adult, Elders - those with comprised health. The world is ignorant of history and less of history that matters. These indigenous tribes go back 100,000 years - we may not believe it - but the empirical data is there - for all the world to see. In the middle of Ramadan this video - should allow us to review the atrocities of the invaders - the Portuguese, the British in this region in the 16th Century.I have travelled and seen for myself this region - the video bring new light to the era of enlightenment. Much like the Six Nations in the United States - tribes who practiced democracy and the Long Cabin. In this case Islam led by leaders having wisdom - took control their destiny. Only for the invaders - the colonizers - to ruin harmony and more.

To make this clear Oman never had influence on all the East African coast it had control/ influence over the Swahili coast from the middle of Kenya down to tanzania the north Kenya province or south jubbaland and the Somali coast did not have any Omani people in fact the omani sultan paid a protection tax for being protected of which he did not know such as assailants and not being attacked by Somalis of course etc

As a Portuguese our presence in the Arabe and indian ocean are not much spoken and the same goes to southeast Asia. We mostly talk about Moçambique, Goa, Diu and Macau. Its honestly facistaning to me that we had that much presence in Oman despite the otaman empire. Oman seems like a well balance country with the mind on the right place. Cant wait for one day to travel there.

It's interesting that they say that we (the portuguese) colonised them. We never view and were never taught that Oman was a portuguese colony, only that we established trading and strategic ports along the coast. Besides that the sheikh of Muscat was allied with the portuguese. I have no clue why they are saying the portuguese were brutal, there is no information about that anywhere.

Oman claimed Mogadishu leading to geledi sultanate declaring war against oman and leading to oman-geledi war which the geledis winning and forcing oman to pay tribute to geledi sultanate and becoming vassal of geledi sultanate. Geledi sultanate seized omans east Africa coast and killed almost all omani settlers and their forces.

The Portuguese knew very well the Strategic Importance of Oman. That's the reason why they built the most important and impressive military engineering Buildings/ Fortresses of the 16th Century in Mascate, nowadays Oman capital city. For 146 years it was the Biggest and most Important military Portuguese base in Muslim Territory, and it was the last one to fall in all the Arabia. The Portuguese very soon realize that controlled Oman and the Strait, was the one with the " Upper Hand" in all the Trade between Asia,Africa and Europe. The Portuguese did Open the Door (Literally) for other European Nations try their luck in the Massive Profits waiting for them, from the Middle East to Japan, with India,China and many other lands in between.

When the British merchant ships were asked to pay the levy/tax as their ships passed by Julfar , after trading with India and beyond, the British refused. Then when their ships were attacked by the Qawasim tribes, the British called them ‘pirates’ amd justified their naval attacks on them!
