Lebanon: Sibling of Syria | Al Jazeera World

Ойын-сауық

Syria’s conflict has been leaking out of its borders, but in few places are risks higher than in Lebanon.
Divided at birth by French colonial design after World War I, both states were destined to be bound by a common fate, but over the years their relationship was to prove uneasy - like that of rival siblings.
Only in 2008 did the two countries formalise diplomatic ties for the first time since both gained independence from France in the 1940s.
Recounting their history, this film helps explain how Syria and Lebanon are inextricably tied together - the fate of one defining that of the other.
"Lebanon has always been the entry point for any intervention in Syria’s internal affairs. During the past 40 years, we got used to hearing people rejecting the Syrian intervention in Lebanese affairs. But the truth is all the coups that took place in Syria between 1949 and 1970 had been planned in Beirut. Beirut was the starting point for the planning and the logistic support for every coup in Syria," says Jamal Wakim, a history professor at the Lebanese International University.
This historical journey helps explain how ongoing sectarian conflict in Syria risks setting off the powder keg of Lebanon.
"For the first time since 1970, when Hafez al-Assad came to power, up until now, Lebanon misses the spirit of the ‘big brother’. The oppressive spirit that also brings our people together. We can’t just wonder how the current situation in Syria would affect life in Lebanon. This is a serious issue. And we need to think more about it," says Nahla Chahal, a researcher and journalist."
This film looks at the history of the turbulent relationship between Syria and Lebanon - a history of sibling nations that bodes ill for the future.

I'm a student and I like to listen to your documentaries during bed time by just listening with earphones plugged. Please instead of only adding subtitles to foreign language provide voice-overs in english. So, it's more convenient as we won't have to look at it again and again. I also listen to these whilst driving. Thank you.

I agree, i am an Arab but I was born in the US. I can only speak basic Arabic, things to get from point A to point B and function in the society. I can’t understand political speeches. They’re too advanced for me. I would prefer a voice over. The only thing is that the passion is gone with the voice over.

sir this documentary is made by an arab channel , it was made in English intentionally to convince the westerners of the channel's lies .. Lebanon is much older than Sykes Picot , it was older than syria itself ... and during the course of Lebanon history since 3000 years , Lebanese and Syrians were never even friends .. Syrians always tried to invade Lebanon willing to annex it to syria .. Sykes Picot gave Lebanon back the cities that the Ottomans have splitted from Lebanon and annexed to Damascus ( not Syria ) in order to weaken the Lebanese resistance .. Lebanese never called themselves Syrians .. this report is made by a bunch of liars .. lying is as easy as drinking water for arabs .. all the problems lebanon is going thru are because of these hypocrite arabs ,,... leaving palestinian refugees and now syrian refugees in Lebanon is not an accident .. they keep there in hope they start a war to kick us out of our country and turn lebanon into an islamic state

No it wasn't. It was because the Lebanese people have always been peace-loving people and wanted to live in peace, and that's why France came to the rescue and brokered the Security Council decision, reflecting the sentiment of the Lebanese as a whole. Unfortunately, others like to take advantage of that spirit and want to dominate Lebanon. Damascus was for shopping and Beirut was for money and fun, and both are still at odds over who is to control who.

One dimension completely missing i.e. The role of Israel which is most developed, most hegemonic out to destroy the unity of Arabs for its future aspirations, in the region. Has Israel been completely respecting the sovereignty of Lebanon in which it is quite nincompoop. So then many things piled on the shoulder of Syria must be actually Israeli launched.

The reason is the strategic geographic location between the 3 main continents in the world, Europe, Asia and Africa. Everyone wants to control whatever they want. Why not declare the whole area peaceful and open it to free trade and tourism? Everyone wins instead of everyone loses to each other forever.

Lebanon is a colonial european creationg made by france from the lands of Syria, so what do you expect, who called the Syrians to intervine in the lebanese civil war??? Martians? or Lebansese themselves? guess?

syria is a fictional boundary loosely held together encompassing different ethnic groups that have different cultures and traditions. Syria's borders looks like any random post colonial african failed state. Lebanon is mentioned 70 times in the Bible and is a Land of Christianity.
