Roadtrip Iraq | Al Jazeera World

Ойын-сауық

The incidental casualties of war are the individuals who lose family, property, limbs and lives. But sometimes collateral damage can describe what has happened to an entire nation.
Ten years after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Iraq still suffers from the damage in the overthrow of the dictator and the chaos that followed.
Now, as Iraq adjusts after the withdrawal of American troops, what is the new reality of everyday life? What are the daily struggles for the ordinary people of this extraordinarily diverse country?
Roadtrip Iraq asks how far Iraq's authorities have been able to deliver justice, prosperity and the kind of security needed for any kind of normal civilian life.
From the mainly Kurdish north, through the predominantly Sunni middle belt, and ending in the Shia-majority south, a film crew takes a roadtrip by bus, gathering stories of ordinary people as they jump on and off for their part of the journey.
Artists, warlords and widows are among those who share their sorrows, reveal their problems and describe their dreams. We discover just what the country looks like through the eyes of its war-weary sons and daughters.
We meet activists, among them Zahid Mahmoud, who sums up his perception of the state of the country:
"We didn't have freedom under Saddam's rule, but we didn't live in hunger either. Today - we do have freedom but people are starving. Most people are poor. Thousands of new graduates can't find a job. The leaders are monopolising the job market for the benefit of their entourage."
Another resident's wishes sum up the yearning of the divided country.
"Our wish is that we get a just ruler. Someone who can reconcile our differences and listen to everyone whether Sunni, Shia, Kurd, Arab or Christian," Taha Kamel from Fallujah says.
A dictator was taken down at a very high price to the Iraqi people. A price that it seems they will continue to pay for many years to come.
Roadtrip Iraq crosses the country from north to south, taking the pulse of a nation that is no longer at war but neither at peace.
Editor's Note: This film by Feurat Alani originally aired on July 31, 2013.

That's not what most westerners think. Most people in the US and Canada hate the idea of the war or any war. It's not up to them to go to war. It's up to the corrupt govt to do send their troops. America isnt the hero, everyone knows that. The soldiers are sent there to fight, they dont ask questions. When people say America is the hero, they arent talking about America as a whole or the govt, they are talking about the young American soldiers who were sent to die for nothing and kill people that didnt need to be killed. Most soldiers were against the war after the first year cause they knew it was wrong. Of course not all Iraqis are bad. Maybe you watch to much FOX and NBC. Stop being ignorant.

So much of your report contains information and pictures of towns and villages that reflect the devastation during and after the war. Your report brings to light the painful, horrific, unspeakable effects of in-fighting among relatives and neighbors who differ only in minor religious doctrine. There have been no real winners coming from this war. There has been too much killing, maiming, and destruction of entire civilizations that had co-existed peacefully for thousands of years before this senseless fighting began. Thank you for taking the serious risks to your own safety, so as to bring us this insight.

I like the last part i seen streets that i walked on and places i've been. Back in 2008 when we started that mission i got so sick when i went to the market from the smell. People had been driven out of that market by Al Mahdi armies i made alot of friends there and people i'll never forget. There was good and bad places and good and bad people most of the locals there was nice people and welcome us in. But right at the center of town and parts of the outsides of basra most off the people didnt like us or want us there. There was day they was nice and cheering for us hugs and kisses the hole 9 yards and then days that they was throwing rock and trying to push us out them days i belive there was forces there watching the locals and they was scared to welcome us in. but for most of all i like the people in basra and there where good hearted nice people and it was such a pretty place beside the war torn streets and faces. I would love to return to basra oneday till then i wish the people there good luck and health and that god will bless them Eric

I wish, when they finish developing a story, there would be a way to contact Al Jazeera, or whomever makes a documentary such as this one, so that we can help at least one person. Very frustrating, when we want so badly to help, but the person featured in the story obviously has to remain anonymous, for their own safety.

I am not sure how can I reach her and if she is actually still living in the same place after three years from the time of the documentary. The thing is there are hundreds of women like her, and looking at her home, she is in a better conditions than many other.. At least she has an air conditioner! Many places that we visit has barely few pieces of furniture.. I will try to reach her..and see what we can do.. Here is our Facebook Page, if you are interested.. facebook.com/larakorg/

actually, it's the poverty ignorance and insecurity that leads to people having eight children....because the idea is that the more children you have the more people you have in your family to bring home an income, just like in the olden days. Education is the first step to lowering high birth rates. The richer and more well-off the family is, the less children they'll generally have.

There were no “good guys” in the Iran-Iraq War, only two brutal dictatorships. Saddam Hussein was a megalomaniac who built enormous, ugly monuments to his ambitions and dreamed of becoming the dominant power in the Persian Gulf, controlling the world’s oil supplies, and destroying Israel. At the end of the first Gulf War in 1988, Hussein waged genocide against his own Kurdish population. Ayatollah Khomeini created a theocracy in Iran which imprisoned and executed thousands of its own citizens, forced tens of thousands into exile, and even took American diplomats hostage. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed on both sides. Millions of people on both sides prayed every day for allah to help. Allah did what all Gods do. Nothing

There is so much oil over there why can't the countries come together and share the rewards with ALL the people in those countries. Kuwait who was the first country to be involved in war has recovered and they SHARE the wealth with all of there citizens don't they? Even when u have a democracy and vote into office who you want and will do a good job doesn't seem to matter. The real person shows its colors and The greedy ones always seem to end up with the power. Maybe that's y we voted in trump, because he already had power and dident need to become president to get it. We'll see. God bless you Iraq. And on behalf of the people of the United States be well. And we are sorry.

@@marzee0ne633 You are a typical imperialist-loving dumbass. Under Saddam, they had security, sanitation, jobs, abundant food, residences, culture, utilities, medical resources, women's rights...but the US DESTROYED much of that! There was relative social order under Saddam. The US destroyed Iraq because Saddam moved away from the petrodollar predation. Saddam was brutal and was no saint but he provided far more to his people compared to the death-squad "democracies" around the world propped up by the USA's ruling interests. Get it straight, moron. It was the USA that caused all that "sectarian bullshit."
