    Thanks Brad. I checked my W639 Vito van over yesterday as it's been sitting around for months. I pulled the pipe off the turbo and sure enough there was oil sitting in the inlet. Not too much but enough to annoy me. So I've ordered one of those cheap catch cans and a new PCV. I've installed five of these generic cans with my own internal baffle design to give more surface area to condense the oil. I was planning to make a video as it's a topic people are interested in. You don't need to spend a fortune on brand name catch cans.

    I wasn't planning to but could do one. They're very simple to install and come with instructions that anyone could follow. I read lots of reviews before choosing DTUK. I found the owner of the business (Andrew) very motivated to do the right thing. I've had the DTUK boxes on my C320CDI and Vito for about 6 years without problems. The C320CDI dropped nearly a second off its 0-100kph time. That was after I'd installed the Quaife LSD which does give it more traction off the line.

    Thought you'd like to know my DTUK tuning box failed. It did go well for about eight years until it starting playing up last year. It took a while to realise it was the tuning box causing problems. Once removed the C320CDI ran properly again.

    Bradley I decided to do more investigation on my DTUK tuning box "failure". Well it turns out it's fine ... it was the wiring loom that was causing problems. I stripped the wiring and discovered there are two joins where they split the positive and negative into two and use crimp joiners. These joiners were corroded causing an intermittent connection. I cut them out and made decent soldered joints. After reassembling the loom and reconnecting the DTUK it's working better than ever.

    If the diaphragm inside the PCV is torn up, the PCV housing can leak some smoke to the outside from it's side. Also, if you hear a ticking noice in that area, especially when the engine is idiling cold, most likely it's leaky fuel injector, which cause some smoke to come out.

    Hi! Great vid by the way. I was wondering if you still believe the catch can is a useful add on? I am still on the fence about it and if it is serves any purpose. i try to boost regularly to keep the soot to a minimum, and push a regen on the dpf as much as possible by paddle shifting to a higher rpm on the highway. i haven't noticed to much oil consumption. I know a catch can can't hurt anything , that's for sure. 220k kms on my ml320. Still has a ton of power and i do notice quite a bit of exhaust soot after a good run. Am i doing it right this way, in your opinion.

  • @ScottElliott152

    @ScottElliott152

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes I feel you're doing it right. Take the ML onto the highway periodically to get the regen going. As far as the catch can goes my observation is they do reduce the amount of oil going into the motor. As soon as it was fitted I had less oil around the turbo intake. Instead there was half a cup of oil in the can. I purchased the low cost generic type off eBay and fashioned my own internal baffle with stainless steel swarf. It works well. For sure the catch can is not going to do any harm. Pull the rubber pipe off the PCV valve and observe the amount of oil vapour coming out at idle ... it surprised me. Diesels pump out a lot of oil vapour probably due to the high compression.

    Hi Scott, I'm having a problem with smoke coming from around the pcv area (pcv definitely looked like it needed changing) had it changed yesterday but today again I have seen smoke on closer inspection it appears to be coming from somewhere below the pcv valve, it only happens if the turbo has been used a lot, the rev ends up a bit higher and if I do rev it there is a kind of grinding sound when it comes back down, any ideas? Thanks

  • @ScottElliott152

    Hi Fezan. This was happening to mine. It was oil making it's way down to the exhaust manifold. You probably have some residual lubricant under there so give it a good clean with degreaser or petrol. It's normal for a "noise" after coming off the throttle. The C320CDI and ML32CDI both do it and it sounds like "grinding".

  • @fezanahmad3768

    Appreciate the response 👍 is it something I can easily access and clean or would I need to move some stuff around for access (sorry not very clued on with this stuff) also it's not a problem driving long distance is it? Only when it smokes do I get the grinding noise otherwise it doesn't happen

  • @ScottElliott152

    @ScottElliott152

    @@fezanahmad3768 you don't need to dismantle anything. Just spray degreaser around the area and hose off. It will probably take a few drives to completely burn the oil off. If the noise is worrying you get it looked. It's impossible for me to 100% diagnose without inspection.
