Competition winner - David Cowan - sprautos@gmail.com really common job this guys, if you own this engine you may of had this done, if you haven't there is a good chance you may in its ownership so will give everyone an insight to the job. Although this video makes it look very easy this is actually an 8 hour job! Hope you enjoy all the best everyone.

I had this job done a couple of weeks ago (leak was just a slight weep though) - it was picked up at a routine service. Turbo was OK. 167k on the clock. Hopefully it’s going to last a long time now! Great video, by the way - liked & subscribed 😀

Hi, great, first video I have found with the same surging, I seem to have this fault, is there a way to check the turbo itself to garentee it is at fault? I have the surge I have the pressure code and no eml. I must say though it is intermittent, doesn't do it every time you floor it, 50% maybe but it only happens on full send accel

This is one of the best engines Mercedes made after 2000 . I've had it in many vehicles including jeeps . As long as you keep it up with preventive maintenance and change the oil every 8000 km it runs and runs and runs ... as long as you're not scared to do some stuff yourself , it's not really expensive . Love it , recomend , 5 stars , 10 out of 10 .

@@MoesKeckeEcke Because he's parroting internet stories. The v6 is more sensitive to bad maintenance compared to the older i6, that's true, but that's about it. It's only issues are with the oil cooler and the flaps getting stuck, but the flaps can be cancelled with a resistor and the oil cooler can be kept an eye on. I've seen fleets of sprinters with this engine, all around 650-800k km and still running. Some oil leak here and there, but still ran strong. 1 went over 1 mil km before being finally retired, but not because the engine was bad, but because the truck bed and inside the cabin was getting really worn out.

Sorry but I had an E320 Bluetec with the 642 engine and it was dreadful. In the span of one year: New swirl motor (twice) Oil cooler seal (twice because the dealer screwed up the installation) New turbocharger Three new fuel injectors New motor mounts New intake manifold Numerous oil leaks. Car was serviced at the dealership at the correct service intervals. They never did fix the real problem. Car ran fine until you needed to accelerate to get onto the interstate and the car would go into “limp home”. Twice I almost got killed by a semi truck. Best engine? Nope!

2 other common issues I have found over the years is the PCV on the back left head faiils which allows the oil to travel down the pipe and into the "Y" pipe and then out of the large orange seal. The turbo ends up being changed thinking it's leaking oil when infact it's the PCV thats failed instead. The other one is the large green O ring in the inter cooler pipe at the top of the engine. It's either missing or not giving a proper seal.

I had to do this whole job because that O ring failed and leaked coolant at a huge rate. Within a couple of days of first seeing a leak under the car the engine wouldn`t hold any coolant. This was an OM642 in a Jeep with only 140k on the clock. Good excuse to do the Oil cooler seals before they leaked so no big mess in the engine valley to clean up.

This vid gave me flashbacks of when I did the cooler seals on my R class. It was fortunate that I did it during furlough as it took me a couple of weeks (a lot of that was waiting for parts though). I found the previous owner had done the resistor mod to delete the swirl flap motor. I took the opportunity to reinstate the flaps with a new motor and an aluminium rod kit. The previous owner had also fitted a chineseium actuator to the turbo but I ordered a genuine refurbed one from the states. One little mod I added was I added a shroud made from an old drinks can to cover the swirl flap motor as even though I was replacing the turbo inlet seal, I have only ever known them to leak. The shroud is shaped to guide any oil that drips down behind the flap motor and into the V. I'd be curious to know if you have a definite fix for the red seal leaking?

An oil catch can circuit between CCV & turbo inlet would reduce substantially amount of oil that cascades down into valley from batwing turbo inlet seal. In my opinion, that is true source of most car om642's oil leaks. It soaks swirl flap motor, splashes all over turbo pedestal & then pools around oil cooler before draining through that weep hole in valley near bell housing. These issues don't really exist on 642s from Sprinters because they have a much better air intake system & larger oil pan that can accept 5 more quarts of oil. Every time I see another om642 oil leak video, I thank my lucky stars that I still have an om648 w211 on the road.

If the chain starts to stretch you will get a rattle on start up lasting around 3 seconds. There isn’t an interval the chain but when it rattles that it letting you know It wants a new one. Oil cooler hasn’t really got a pattern. I’ve seen it happen at low miles and also not leak until high miles.

  • @sprautos

I personally prefer to just fix it properly, I think the delete is ok for a temp fix if your short of funds. Garages wouldn’t supply any warranty with the resistor mod. So it all depends what you want and what the customer expectations are I suppose. Yea always bang a ltr or so down the filter housing helps stop a dry start.

Where do you buy the kit to repair the intake flaps? My OM642 is at 260k miles and I've been nursing it for a bit having had to unplug sensors, used a resistor bypass for the swirl flaps, etc. to avoid limp mode but I've started to try to make it right again. Just replaced the turbo actuator and PCV and may take on the swirl flap situation next. I notice a pretty hard stutter periodically when I give it a lot of gas so wondering if maybe the swirl flaps didn't fail open. Is there a way to inspect the swirl flaps without a tear down, like with a mini camera? Just want to be sure that is likely culprit.

I've taken off the shield before while installing a new actuator, can the turbo be removed from the top or is it a pretty significant tear down? I have an autel that can test some subsystems I may play with that to see if I can confirm it is the turbo acting up unless there is a simple mechanical way to activate it manually that you recommend.

Hey mate came across your channel.... My grandad passed away recently and he left me his W211 v6 E Class 2005 and it has been stood about 4 years since it broke on him.... he took it to a local "meredes" specialist and the issue was a sensor on the driver front wheel which they made out they fixed but when the car was returned it was then flagging a SBC , ESB on the dash.... my plan is to gradually do it up as a summer project but my question to you is could the sensor on the front wheel be causing the electronic issues and flagging up these faults or could the entire SBC unit be faulty... i have read they have a limit on how many times it can be used before you have to flash them.... just looking for abit of advice really... cheers

  • @sprautos

    @sprautos

    Ай бұрын

First off sorry to hear that about your grandad. And good on you for wanting to get the car back up and running. It’s very difficult to say without diagnoses and investigation but hear is what advise I can give you. Abs sensors have to be genuine, Mercedes don’t like none genuine sensors and I’ve never had any luck with them, make sure you buy from mb dealer as there are lots of fake on eBay. On the front wheel bearing there is a seal which is also the abs pick up ring that can go faulty if the fault is still flagging on that same wheel the sensor was fitted, our SLk video we did will help you with what I’m explaining. SBC pumps can and do go faulty and yes do have a shelf life. With SBC faults you usually get service brake visit workshop in white on the dash or red staying stop vehicle with massively reduced brake pressure. It really needs to be diagnosed and some Time spent with it to pin point exactly but hope this may help. All the best 🙏

Should be an EU law against it, my 2013 C class coupe front callipers have a Mercedes name plate that covers the gap on side of calliper so you don’t see pads, it’s fixed by two dowels, one fell out, Mercedes said I would have to buy a new calliper to get it 😱😡just doesn’t make sense, and so wasteful !!!
