I'm so worried about Daichi!! But.... this episode has the back-story I've been waiting for, and a lot of amazing stuff is happening! There were some amazing episodes in season 1, and Haikyu! season 2 really started off strong, but this episode will probably end up as one of my faves from this season. I had goosebumps the whole time!!

Oikawa in this episode acts as a narrator of sorts for the viewers. Haikyuu always finds a random character outside the match to scatter some exposition, in every episode, so the story flows well. It can be an audience member, Ukai & Takeda, the other bench players etc etc. So Oikawa's not being mean here, just summarising the 18-14 points at the end there, in a few sentences for us 😆

I like how Sarah accurately predicted, with such confidence, that Ennoshita was gonna take Daichi's place. Not only did she get this right , she even noticed/remembered that one line Ennoshita said in season 1 about him once running away. And bear in mind this is only her first time watching the show! A lot of other reactors were not even aware of Ennoshita's existence at this point and many of them just went "oh who's this guy". This is why i find Sarah's reaction very enjoyable. Keep it up!

Also lol Sarah's never going easy on Oikawa or Tsukishima. Don't worry, Sarah, neither Tsuki nor Oikawa were being malicious this episode! Oikawa and Iwaizumi were very seriously talking about concussions and know Daichi's worth as the captain, and are wondering how it would affect Karasuno to play without him. On the other hand, Tsuki can tell that Yamaguchi already knows what he did wrong and also knew, like Ennoshita (who told Ukai as much), that it would just make him feel worse to talk about it on top of that. So internal conflicts aside, there's no animosity among the characters here 😊

The name "Ennoshita Chikara (縁下 力)" comes from the Japanese proverb "En no Shita no Chikara mochi (縁の下の力持ち) - a powerful person like a pillar that supports the roof." The meaning is "a person who makes efforts and struggles for others in a place where others do not look." The name suits him very well. Daichi, his name also suits him, the name means "the earth."

It is a habit of anime storytelling to play with their names, but in Haikyuu in particular it is done a great extreme, and IMO success. The name of each character, and of each team, has a particular meaning, allegory or "ring to it." The easiest examples to grasp is how most teams are paired with animals (the Crows/KARASUno, the Swan/SHIRATORIzawa, the Cats/NEKOma, the Owl/FUKUROUdani) and how this informs the way they play. The crows are the smartest bird, they are ingenious, inventive, scavengers. The cats are dexterous but sleepy, they can play with their food as much as they can be vicious killers. The swan is grandiose and majestic. Regarding the players, you have the Hinata/Tsukishima pair. Hinata Shoyo which is something like "the sunny place where the sun soars" in his name, he is overly outgoing, energetic and moves on instinct; while Tsukishima Kei has the moon, he is perceptive and logical to a fault, he also has the island which poetically can refer to been somewhat lonely and the Firefly.

  • @s_lasgalen

@@Yama_no_Kitsune another thing about Moon and Firefly - Moon doesn't shine itself, it only reflects the Sun's rays. It seems at first that Tsukishima isn't initiative and isn't really much but when you get to know him better, you find out that he actually does shine. Like a firefly who shines timidly but produces it's own light, Tsukishima reveals himself in the future as the hidden weapon of the team.

I half disagree with this comment, and one of the reasons is another misunderstanding earlier in the video. When Ennoshita checks in and Tsukishima says "Oh, so it *is* you Ennoshita-san" it isn't meant to be mean, it's actually a half-compliment as Tsukki figured Ennoshita was the only realistic substitute for Daichi in this situation, which is in my opinion a pretty high half-compliment considering the episode emphasizes Daichi's role in the team. Tsukki originally only cared about Yamaguchi in a manner of co-dependence, Yamaguchi was his lackey and he was the cool quiet tall guy nobody is going to pick on, now Tsukki's learning to break out of his shell and take criticism, as well as be understanding.

And when they show all those little tidbits here of him controlling the second-years and actively getting to know the first-years on the sidelines, you have this "oh damn that's right" moment of realizing that he's really putting a lot of effort into this, even if he doesn't get as much screen time.

There's something I think I learned fast while watching haikyuu and I think is mostly bc of my way of absorbing content specially stories which is by just letting it flow and not expecting things or jumping to conclusions cuz at the end of the day it's a fictional storyline that will show me what I need to know through the narration and the characters....and bc of this mindset the thing I learned around season two was that.... THERE ARE NO ENEMIES OR BAD PPL IN HAIKYUU and that's the most realistic thing here, it's not about having a villain, it's a story where, like in real life, you have characters that have different personalities and are living their own story and have their own goals and dreams and so everyone have flaws and virtues so that mindset helps a lot to accept all the characters in HAIKYUU eventually, cuz y'know at the end of the day they're not evil they're just highschool players that might be sometimes cocky or childish or ignorant but that will always be a starting point to change and develop, it's such great writing HAIKYUU has.

The concept in Haikyuu I love the most is that while passion is great, it can't be manufactured. Forcing yourself to do something you love is the fastest way to stop loving it; sometimes as Sarah points out, taking some time away from something you love when it gets hard can remind you how much you miss it when you're not doing it. My biggest criticism of Slam Dunk (Haikyuu's spiritual predecessor) is that injury doesn't seem to be taken as seriously, or at the very least it's seen as macho and admirable to push through injury despite the danger of further injury. I think the vast majority of people weren't even aware of his existence (let alone his name) up until this point so for you to accurately predict that just shows your attention to detail👌 as always, great reaction to a great episode!😊 the feels really were all over the place whew

absolutely love how much you loved this episode. many reactors aren't as invested in the side character stories/developments (which is okay, but I'm always a sucker for seeing other people get truly engrossed in all the stories these characters have, even if they're not in the spotlight for a majority of the story), but you so clearly are and it's a joy seeing it every time! the immediate (and correct!) prediction of ennoshita as the substitute to the enjoyment of his backstory and its lessons, and just your continuous love for these boys... gah :') it's a treat! hope you have been doing well, sarah!

Ennoshita Chikara's name is worth taking note: there's a Japanese expression called "ennoshita no chikara-mochi" (縁の下の力持ち), literally "the one with the power behind the scenes," but it means basically the unsung hero / the guy who makes things happen without getting noticed. 😀

  • @DamienLunas

The line that Tsukki says to Ennoshita when he comes on is actually fairly supportive. He's basically saying he kind of expected to see Ennoshita come on because he's the obvious best choice. He's trying to show that he doesn't question the choice to bring on Ennoshita at all. It's only natural that they would choose him. As for the rest of the first years, they're trying to put him at ease by moving forward and quickly integrating him into the captain role by talking strategy with him. They're telling Ennoshita "You belong on the court and you belong in the captain seat right now."

Late to the party but when Ennoshita first gets on the court, Tsukishima says "oh, yappari Ennoshita-san nandesu ne", which has the nuance of "of course it's you, OBVIOUSLY it's you, that's to be expected, who else would it be?", which really highlights the fact that absolutely no one was surprised that Ennoshita was chosen and why Ennoshita was shocked out of his spiraling to begin with.

Sarah, Oikawa is not a bad guy. I am sure a lot of Haikyu fans already told you. Haikyu spent a lots of time for character development and it doesn’t have truly evil character. If Oikawa is really a bad, he would not any advice to Kageyama. Oikawa is Kageyawa’s mentor and Kageyama still has a huge respect to Oikawa. Also Oikawa has never criticized either Hinata or Kageyama in public. He only said in front of Iwa chan or Kageyama himself. This applies to Ushijima too. Oikawa and Ushijima deeply care about Kageyama and Hinata developments as volleyball players. I don’t know why you got a little annoyed by what is Oikawa said. Look at his face. Does he look sad?

As far as Dai's injuries go, having a tooth break in the way he did especially a molar ment a LOT of force. He also didn't just "lose a tooth" as only the top crown portion came loose. The root structure did not, meaning not only would the injury be painful from the impact but he has a broken exposed nerve. Very painful and as a lot of people already know head injuries bleed a lot, and it's the same for inside your mouth. For example when removing a tooth, someone depending on some variables may bleed between one or more hours. Possibly less but the clotting is still quite fragile under the 24 hour mark, especially if doing physical activities that increase blood pressure. So, such an injury in the oral cavity and to attempt to enter again into the court not a great idea. Some athletes you hear of doing this, have a lot of pain, assuming they could get the bleeding to stop well enough to continue playing/participating. I cringed seeing this scene initially because I understood how painful that had to actually be, especially as his adrenaline wore off once leaving the court.

i might be off base, but i feel like his character and personality is a really common trope in manga/anime, and if you're someone who reads or watches it often you might be used to that (and understand that you're not supposed to hate him; on the contrary characters like him are often some of the most popular lol). but maybe people who aren't used to characters like him, like most haikyuu reactors i've watched who seem to be new to anime, just kind of read it a little wrong. and in general they tend to look for "bad guys" and assume there have to be some, and oikawa comes closest to that. that said, you know, sometimes people just don't like characters, and that's totally fine lol. i love oikawa immensely but his personality isn't going to be for everyone, though i get that it's frustrating when it feels like people are misinterpreting things he does or says. mostly i'm reeeeeally curious to see if reactors' opinions of him change after they read the whole story (or whenever the anime catches up to it). 😌

I had a couple really general questions about using indoor vball strategies on the beach. you know when Hinata learns to hit softly against the blockers hands to get the ball back on his side of the court (like a rebound in a way), do you think this is possible to do in beach volleyball? or would it be really hard to time because in beach you usually don't have a lot of time to wait for the peak of the blocker? also sometimes Hinata does a thing where he is hitting intentionally against the block in a way that the ball will land outside of the court off the block. is it possible to do this in beach vball too? would there be something about the timing of beach play that makes this more difficult to do? lastly, the setting in indoors volleyball gets super technical, especially with the low and quick sets. do you think it would be effective to do faster and lower sets on the beach? sometimes I feel like my beach setting is really predictable, especially if there are more than 2 players on the court (like 3-4 person teams). thanks
